1) Will the Schlage SM10 mullion reader fit on a narrow aluminum door mullion?
That's what the SM10 is built for. It's a mini-mullion reader measuring 4.26 x 1.72 x 0.81 inches, so it sits on the narrow face of a mullion or a tight door stile where a full-size wall reader won't go. It mounts with a bracket and a quick-connect cable, and it's rated for interior, exterior, metal and non-metal mounting surfaces, so the metal mullion itself is not a problem.
2) What credentials does the Schlage SM10 reader read?
The SM10 reads 13.56 MHz smart credentials, including MIFARE Classic and MIFARE DESFire EV1, EV2 and EV3, plus 125 kHz proximity credentials and the card serial number (CSN) of other manufacturers' smart cards. It also works with Schlage mobile credentials on NFC-open smart phones, so a building running phone-based access doesn't need a separate reader. Card standards supported are ISO 14443A, 14443B and 15693.
3) Will the SM10 reader work with my existing access control panel?
Output is Wiegand or Clock and Data, with RS-485 also available, which covers the input on most access control panels already in the field. If your panel takes a standard Wiegand card reader input, the SM10 wires to it directly. Power is 5 to 16 VDC, so it runs off the reader power most panels already supply without a separate supply.
4) Can I roll out the SM10 without reissuing every badge in the building?
You can run both credential types through it. The reader accepts 125 kHz proximity cards and 13.56 MHz smart credentials, and it will read the card serial number of other manufacturers' smart cards. For a property manager swapping readers across a portfolio one opening at a time, that means existing prox badges keep working while new DESFire or mobile credentials get issued.
5) We are running reader cable back to the access control panel. Does the Securitron R100 drop into the same wiring as a Schlage SM10?
No - they are not wired the same way and should not be treated as a straight swap. The Schlage SM10 is a wired reader: it takes 5 to 16 VDC and outputs Wiegand or Clock and Data, with RS-485 also available for interfacing to most access control panels, through a quick-connect cable. The Securitron R100 is a wireless card reader, so the run you are pulling for an SM10 is not the infrastructure an R100 expects. Decide the topology first, then pick the reader.
6) Can the Schlage SM10 be mounted outside in a cold climate?
Yes. Operating range is -31 to 151 degrees F (-35 to 67 C), and exterior installation is one of the stated mounting environments. The housing is PBT polymer. That range covers a northern-tier exterior entry or an unheated parking garage mullion.
7) Should I use a mini-mullion reader or a full-size wall-mount reader?
It comes down to the mounting surface. A mini-mullion reader like the SM10 has a narrow 1.72 inch body so it fits on an aluminum storefront mullion or a narrow stile next to a glass door. On a drywall or block wall beside the opening there is room for a larger single-gang reader, and the mullion form factor buys you nothing. Pick the mullion size when the only place to land the reader is the door frame itself.
8) Is the SM10 secure enough for a high-security area, or is a prox reader fine?
The SM10 is the encrypted option. Schlage recommends it for mid-level to high security applications where secure, encrypted technology is required, because it reads MIFARE DESFire and MIFARE Classic smart credentials rather than relying on a plain 125 kHz prox number. It still reads 125 kHz prox, which is what lets you run a mixed fleet during a migration, but the security case for it is the 13.56 MHz smart credential.
9) What is the difference between the Schlage SM10 and the Securitron R100 wireless reader?
Two different wiring stories. The SM10 is a hardwired mullion reader with Wiegand, Clock and Data, or RS-485 output back to an access control panel, powered at 5 to 16 VDC. The Securitron R100, from the RH100 Series, is a surface mounted wireless card reader. If you already have conduit and a panel at the door, the SM10 drops into that infrastructure; where pulling wire to the opening is the obstacle, the wireless unit is the one to look at.
10) How does a user know the SM10 read their card?
There's a multi-color LED (red, green or amber) plus audible feedback on the reader, so a user gets both a visual and a beep confirmation at the door. That matters on a mullion install where the reader sits at the frame and the person is already reaching for the handle.
