The Schlage® MT11 smart and proximity reader can be easily mounted on to a door frame. It reads multiple brands of both legacy 125 kHz and 13.56 MHz technologies including MIFARE Classic® and MIFARE® DESFire®. 1) Will the Schlage MT11 reader fit on a narrow aluminum door mullion?
The MT11 is the mullion-mount reader in Schlage's multi-technology line, and its footprint is what makes that work: 5.91 x 1.72 x 0.81 inches. At 1.72 inches across it sits on a standard narrow mullion or door frame face without overhanging the glass stop. If you need to mount on a wall next to the opening rather than on the frame itself, a single-gang or wall-size reader is the better pick.
2) What credentials does the Schlage MT11 multi-tech reader accept?
Both legacy 125 kHz proximity and 13.56 MHz smart credentials, in one reader. That covers MIFARE Classic and MIFARE DESFire EV1, EV2 and EV3, plus the card serial number (CSN) of other manufacturers' smart credentials, and it works to ISO 14443A, 14443B and 15693. It also reads NFC mobile credentials on iOS and Android using Schlage mobile credentials. If you are mid-migration from prox to smart cards, this is the reader that lets both badge populations work on the same door.
3) Will the Schlage MT11 reader work with my existing access control panel?
Output is Wiegand, Clock and Data, or OSDP, with optional RS-485 capability, so it interfaces with most access control panels already in the field. The model sold here is the MT11-485, the RS-485 version. Standard default PIV output is 75 bit. Confirm your panel's reader port is set for the protocol you intend to run before you terminate.
4) What power and wiring does a Schlage MT11 reader need?
Power is 5 to 16 VDC, a wide enough window that most panel-supplied reader power works without a separate supply. Wiring is 18 AWG, 5 conductor stranded and shielded. Pull the shielded cable and ground the shield at the panel end only, as you would for any reader run. The MT11 ships with a quick-connect cable and a mounting bracket.
5) Can the Schlage MT11 reader be mounted outdoors on an exterior door?
Yes. The MT11 accommodates interior, exterior, metal and non-metal installation environments, and its operating range is -40 to 158 degrees F (-40 to 70 C), so a north-face exterior entry in a cold climate is within spec. The housing is PBT polymer, which is also why it reads through its own case when mounted on a metal frame.
6) Can I standardize on the Schlage MT11 across a facility that still has old 125 kHz prox badges?
That is the case this reader is built for. Because it reads 125 kHz proximity and 13.56 MHz smart credentials from multiple brands, plus the CSN of other manufacturers' smart cards, you can swap readers opening by opening without reissuing every badge on day one, then move the population to DESFire or mobile credentials on your own schedule. It is a commercial-duty product, and the mullion form factor is what you use on aluminum entry frames throughout a building.
7) Do I need a keypad reader or is a card-only reader like the MT11 enough?
The MT11 is credential-only: card, fob or phone, with LED (red, green or amber) and audio feedback on a read. There is no keypad and no magnetic stripe slot on it. If your site requires card-plus-PIN for a secure area, or PIN-only after hours, you want one of the keypad models in the Schlage multi-technology reader family instead. The multi-tech line runs five models covering keypad and magnetic stripe variants.
8) What is the difference between the Schlage MT11 and the Securitron R100 wireless reader?
Two different installation approaches. The MT11 is a wired mullion reader: 18 AWG 5 conductor back to a panel, 5 to 16 VDC, Wiegand, Clock and Data or OSDP output. The Securitron R100 of the RH100 Series is a surface mounted wireless card reader, which is the direction you go when running cable to the opening is the problem, such as a glass storefront or a finished wall you cannot open up. If you already have a panel and conduit at the frame, the wired MT11 is the straightforward install.
9) Will the Schlage MT11 read employee phones instead of badges?
It reads NFC mobile credentials on iOS and Android, using Schlage mobile credentials on NFC-open smart phones. That is in addition to physical cards, not in place of them, so a mixed site with some staff on phones and contractors on plastic works off the same reader head.
