1) Will the Schlage MT15 reader read the 125 kHz prox cards we already issue, or do we have to reissue everyone?
No reissue needed. The MT15 is a multi-technology reader: it reads 125 kHz proximity credentials and 13.56 MHz smart credentials at the same head, including MIFARE Classic and MIFARE DESFire EV1, EV2 and EV3, plus the card serial number (CSN) of other manufacturers' smart cards. That is the point of the multi-tech head, you keep the legacy prox population working while you issue smart cards to new hires and phase the old ones out on your own schedule.
2) Can the MT15 reader be used with phone credentials instead of cards?
Yes. The MT15 works with NFC-open smartphones using Schlage mobile credentials, on both iOS and Android. Because it still reads 125 kHz prox and 13.56 MHz smart cards, you can run phones and cards side by side rather than cutting over the whole population at once.
3) Will the Schlage MT15 wire into my existing access control panel?
In most cases yes. The MT15 offers Wiegand, Clock and Data, and OSDP interfaces, with optional RS-485 capability, which covers the input types on most access control panels. Check which output your panel head-end expects before you pull wire, because that decision drives the reader configuration and, for OSDP or RS-485, the topology of the run.
4) What size electrical box does the Schlage MT15 reader mount to?
The MT15 is a single gang wall mount reader, so it lands on a standard single gang box or bracket rather than on a door mullion. The reader body measures 5.1 x 3.25 x 0.76 inches (H x W x D), so it covers a single gang plate with room to spare. If you are mounting on a narrow aluminum door stile or a glass front frame, a single gang reader will not fit that profile and you want a mullion-style reader instead.
5) Can the Schlage MT15 reader be mounted outdoors or on a metal door frame?
Both are fine. The MT15 handles interior, exterior, metal and non-metal installation environments, and it operates from -40 to 158 degrees F (-40 to 70 C), which covers unconditioned garages, loading docks and exterior entries in most climates. The housing is PBT polymer. Metal mounting surfaces do not rule it out, unlike some prox readers that need a spacer.
6) What voltage and wire do I need to run for a Schlage MT15 reader?
Power the MT15 from 5 to 16 VDC, which means a standard 12 VDC access control power supply drives it without a separate regulator. Pull 18 AWG, 5 conductor stranded and shielded cable to each reader location. Terminate the shield at the panel end only, as you would on any reader home run. The reader includes a quick-connect cable and a mounting bracket, so the rough-in is the box and the cable.
7) Does the Schlage MT15 have a keypad for PIN entry?
No. The MT15 is a card and credential read head only, with an LED indicator (red, green or amber) and audio feedback but no keypad. If your facility needs card plus PIN at the door, you need a keypad model from the multi-technology reader line instead. Schlage lists five models in the family covering keypad and magnetic stripe variants, so specify the keypad version at order time rather than trying to add one later.
8) What is the difference between the MT15 and the MT15-485 version?
The MT15 is offered here in the MT15-485 model. The base reader supports Wiegand and Clock and Data output with RS-485 listed as an optional capability, so the -485 designation is the RS-485 build, which is what you order when the panel is talking OSDP over a two-wire bus rather than taking a Wiegand data pair. Specify the interface your panel uses when you order, since that is the difference between the two.
9) Does the MT15 reader work with government PIV cards?
The MT15 supports ISO 14443A, 14443B and 15693 credential standards and has a standard default PIV output of 75 bit. That 75 bit format is what your head-end has to be configured to accept, so confirm the card format template on the panel side before you commission a PIV population.
10) Do I have to use Schlage cards with the MT15, or will other brands' credentials work?
You are not locked to Schlage. The MT15 reads Schlage credentials and other industry manufacturers' credentials, including the card serial number of other makers' 13.56 MHz smart cards. Reading a foreign card by CSN is not the same as reading its secure sector, so if your existing cards carry an encrypted application from another vendor, plan on the CSN as the credential number your panel sees.
11) What is the alternative to a hardwired card reader like the MT15 if I cannot run cable to the door?
Hardwired is the assumption with the MT15: it needs a 5 conductor home run back to the panel and 5 to 16 VDC.
