1) Will Schlage 7410 prox cards work with my existing HID readers?
The 7410 is a 125 kHz proximity credential compatible with most HID formats up to 37 bits, and it reads on Schlage and other manufacturers' proximity readers and electronic locks. If your building already runs a 125 kHz prox system, these drop into it without changing readers or the head end. What they will not do is work on a smart-card-only reader (13.56 MHz); 125 kHz prox and smart technology are different frequencies.
2) Are Schlage 125 kHz proximity cards encrypted or secure enough for a high-security facility?
No. The 7410 prox credential carries no encryption. That is the nature of 125 kHz proximity technology, and it is why Schlage positions these for facilities with less demanding security needs. For a site where cloning is a real threat, you want an encrypted smart credential instead. If you are mid-transition, Schlage multi-technology credentials read on both proximity and smart readers, so you can move over reader by reader rather than all at once.
3) What is the difference between a clamshell prox card and a printable composite card?
Clamshell is the thicker, moulded style, and the 7410 measures 3.37 x 2.125 x 0.075 inches. That extra thickness is what makes it hold up in a pocket or on a badge clip day after day. The tradeoff: a clamshell is not a direct-print card, so if you need a photo ID printed on the face, a clamshell is the wrong form factor. 4) How close does a Schlage 7410 card have to be to the reader?
Read range on the 7410 runs up to 4 to 5 inches, so it is a present-the-card credential, not a hands-free or drive-up one. It is contactless, meaning no swipe and no contact with the reader face. For a parking gate or a long-range vehicle application, this is the wrong credential type.
5) How do I keep track of card numbers when I order more prox cards for my building later?
Schlage runs a CardTrax account tracking program at no additional cost, which keeps a record of the card numbers issued against your account. That is what makes reordering a matching batch practical a year or two down the line, so new cards continue the number sequence instead of colliding with badges already in circulation. 6) We are replacing an old magnetic stripe badge system. Are prox cards the right upgrade?
