1) Will the Schlage MTK15 reader work with my existing access control panel?
The MTK15 outputs Wiegand, Clock & Data, and OSDP, with optional RS-485 capability, so it interfaces with most access control panels. The model sold here is the MTK15-485, the RS-485 variant. Default PIV output is 75 bit. Match the output format your panel expects before you pull wire.
2) What credentials does the Schlage MTK15 keypad reader accept?
Three ways in: 125 kHz proximity cards, 13.56 MHz smart credentials (MIFARE Classic and MIFARE DESFire EV1, EV2 and EV3, plus the card serial number of other manufacturers' smart cards), and PIN entry on the keypad. It also reads Schlage mobile credentials from NFC-open smartphones on iOS and Android. That mix is the point of a multi-technology reader: a facility still running prox can keep those cards working while it issues smart or mobile credentials as budget allows.
3) Can I require a card and a PIN on the same door with the MTK15?
Yes. The MTK15 pairs keypad entry with card read for card + PIN multi-factor authentication, which is the usual requirement on server rooms, pharmacies, records storage, and cash-handling areas. If a door only needs a card, the MT15 without the keypad covers it; the keypad model is what you order when the door needs the second factor or PIN-only credentials for people you do not want to issue a card to.
4) What size electrical box does the Schlage MTK15 reader mount to?
Single gang. The MTK15 measures 5.1 x 3.25 x 0.76 inches and ships with a mounting bracket, and Schlage publishes single gang installation instructions covering the MT15 and MTK15 together. It mounts on interior, exterior, metal and non-metal surfaces, so a mullion or a metal door frame is not a problem.
5) What voltage and wire does the Schlage MTK15 reader need?
Power is 5 to 16 VDC, and the specified cable is 18 AWG, 5 conductor stranded and shielded. A quick-connect cable at the reader handles the termination. The wide 5 to 16 VDC window means it runs off most panel reader ports without a separate supply, but pull the shielded 5 conductor rather than reusing whatever is in the wall.
6) Is the MTK15 a standalone lock or does it need an access control system?
It is a reader only, not a lock. The MTK15 sends credential data to a panel over Wiegand, Clock & Data, OSDP, or RS-485; the panel makes the decision and drives the strike or mag lock. You still need the panel, the locking device, power, and a request-to-exit. If you want a door that works without a head-end, a standalone or wireless product is the different animal you are looking for.
7) What is the difference between the Schlage MTK15 and the Securitron R100 card reader?
They solve two different openings. The MTK15 is a keypad reader that reads both 13.56 MHz smart credentials and 125 kHz proximity cards, so it can run card only, PIN only, or card plus PIN for multi-factor authentication, and it takes 5 to 16 VDC over a wired 18 AWG 5-conductor stranded and shielded run into a single gang box. The Securitron R100 is a surface mounted wireless card reader, so it is credential-only at the door and mounts to the surface rather than into a gang box. If the site needs a PIN entered at the door, or needs a wired Wiegand, Clock and Data, or OSDP run back to an access control panel, the MTK15 is the one that fits; if there is no practical way to pull wire to the reader location, the wireless surface mounted R100 is the approach that works there.
8) Can a Securitron R100 be used in place of a Schlage MTK15 keypad reader?
Only where the door does not need a keypad. The Securitron R100 is a wireless card reader, so a credential is presented and that is the transaction. The Schlage MTK15 has a keypad and an access mode of keypad in addition to reading 125 kHz proximity and 13.56 MHz smart credentials including MIFARE Classic and MIFARE DESFire EV1, EV2 and EV3, plus NFC mobile credentials on iOS and Android. Facilities running PIN-only openings, temporary PIN issuance, or a card plus PIN rule on sensitive rooms lose that behavior with a card-only reader. The other split is the wiring: the MTK15 expects a wired 5 to 16 VDC feed and a wired output to the panel, while the R100 is a wireless surface mounted unit, so the two are not a drop-in swap in either direction on an existing rough-in.
9) Can the MTK15 reader be mounted outside in freezing or hot weather?
Rated -40 to 158 degrees F (-40 to 70 C), so a Minnesota loading dock and a Phoenix parking garage are both inside the operating range. The housing is PBT polymer and the reader is listed for exterior installation. LED indication is red, green, or amber with audio feedback, which matters at an exterior door where a user needs to know the read took without opening the door to find out.
10) What smart card standards does the Schlage MTK15 support?
ISO 14443A, 14443B, and 15693, at 13.56 MHz, alongside 125 kHz proximity. If your existing badge stock is on one of those ISO standards, the reader will at minimum pick up the card serial number, and it reads MIFARE Classic and DESFire EV1/EV2/EV3 natively. Check what your credentials are encoded with, because CSN-only reads and native application reads are not the same security level.
11) How is the Schlage MTK15 different from the Securitron R100 wireless reader?
Two different installation stories. The MTK15 is a hard-wired single gang reader that runs 5 conductor shielded cable back to a panel on Wiegand, OSDP, Clock & Data, or RS-485. The Securitron R100 in the RH100 Series is a surface mounted wireless card reader, which is what you reach for when you cannot get cable to the opening, such as a glass storefront, a gate, or a historic wall you are not allowed to cut. The MTK15 is the one that gives you keypad PIN and card + PIN.
12) Can I standardize the MTK15 across a facility that still uses old 125 kHz prox badges?
That is the migration case this reader is built for. Because it reads both 125 kHz prox and 13.56 MHz smart credentials in the same unit, you can replace readers facility-wide first and reissue credentials on your own schedule, rather than doing both at once. NFC mobile credentials on iOS and Android are supported on the same hardware, so a later move to phone-based access does not mean another reader change-out.
