1) Will the Schlage MTK15 reader read the 125 kHz prox cards our building already uses?
Yes. The MTK15 is a multi-technology reader, so it reads legacy 125 kHz proximity credentials and 13.56 MHz smart credentials from the same faceplate, including MIFARE Classic and MIFARE DESFire EV1, EV2 and EV3, plus the card serial number of other manufacturers' smart cards. That is the whole point of the multi-tech head: you keep issuing the prox cards already in circulation and start issuing smart credentials to new tenants or staff, running both populations off one reader instead of doing a hard cutover.
2) What voltage and wire does a Schlage MTK15 keypad reader need at the door?
Power is 5 to 16 VDC, which lets it run off the reader output of most access control panels without a separate supply. Pull 18 AWG, 5 conductor stranded and shielded to the head end. Terminate the shield at the panel end only, per normal reader practice. It runs in unheated and outdoor locations too, rated -40 to 158 F (-40 to 70 C), so an exterior entry or a parking structure is within range.
3) Does the Schlage MTK15 output Wiegand or OSDP to the access control panel?
Both, plus Clock and Data. The MTK15 supports Wiegand, Clock and Data, and OSDP, and the MTK15-485 is the RS-485 capable version, which is what you order when the head end is running OSDP over RS-485 rather than legacy Wiegand. Default PIV output is 75 bit. If your panel is older Wiegand-only, the same reader still drops in; if you are moving to OSDP for the encrypted, supervised, two-wire multi-drop bus, you already have the hardware for it.
4) Will a Schlage MTK15 reader fit on a single gang box?
Yes, it mounts to a single gang box. The reader body measures 5.1 x 3.25 x 0.76 inches, so it covers a standard single gang plate footprint and projects three quarters of an inch off the wall. It ships with a mounting bracket and a quick-connect cable, and it can go on metal or non-metal surfaces, interior or exterior. On a mullion or a narrow glass frame stile, this is the wrong form factor; you want a mullion-style reader there instead.
5) Can I require a card and a PIN on the same door with the Schlage MTK15?
That is what the keypad is for. The MTK15 pairs card plus PIN for multi factor authentication, so you can run card-only on the lobby during business hours and card plus PIN on a pharmacy, server room, or records room. The keypad also lets you issue PIN only credentials to people who do not carry a card, such as short term trades on site. Which of those modes is active is set in your access control software, not on the reader.
6) Is the Schlage MTK15 a standalone lock or does it need an access control system?
It is a reader, not a lock and not a standalone keypad. The MTK15 sends credential data to an access control panel, which makes the access decision and fires the door hardware, so it has to be part of a system with a panel, a power supply and locking hardware at the opening. If you have a single door and no head end, a standalone electronic lock is the cheaper path; the MTK15 belongs on a networked commercial system.
7) What is the difference between the Schlage MTK15 and the Securitron R100 card reader?

8) Can I use a Securitron R100 instead of a Schlage MTK15 on a door that needs a keypad?
No. The Securitron R100 is a wireless card reader, so entry is by credential presentation. The MTK15 is built around a keypad in addition to its proximity and smart card read, which is what lets it accept a PIN alone or a card followed by a PIN. Any door where the access policy requires an entered code needs the MTK15 or another keypad reader; the R100 suits card-only openings.
9) Should I buy the MTK15 with the keypad or the plain MT15 reader?
Pick by whether any door in the system needs two factors. The MTK15 is the keypad version of the multi-technology wall mount reader, so it does everything a card-only reader does plus card and PIN. If a door will never need a PIN, the keypadless model is a smaller, cleaner faceplate. The practical argument for putting the keypad on is standardization: buying one part number for the whole building means any door can be raised to card plus PIN later without pulling a reader off the wall.
10) Do phones work on the Schlage MTK15, or is it cards only?
Phones work. The reader is compatible with NFC-open smartphones on iOS and Android using Schlage mobile credentials, alongside physical cards. For a property manager, that means new residents or staff can be issued a mobile credential without cutting a card, while everyone still holding a prox fob keeps working on the same reader. Mobile credentials themselves are bought separately from the reader.
11) What smart card standards does the Schlage MTK15 support for our existing badge stock?
The reader works to ISO 14443A, 14443B and 15693. If your current badges are on any of those, the MTK15 will at minimum pick up the card serial number, and it reads MIFARE Classic and DESFire EV1, EV2 and EV3 natively. Reading a CSN is not the same as reading a secured application on the card, so for a card population issued by another integrator, plan on either CSN enrollment or reissuing on a Schlage-programmed credential.
12) Which reader is easier to install where there is no gang box or conduit at the door?
The Securitron R100 is a surface mounted wireless reader, which is the direction to look when the wall has no box and pulling cable to the frame is the obstacle. The MTK15 is a wired single gang mount reader that expects 18 AWG five conductor stranded and shielded cable and 5 to 16 VDC at the device, with a quick-connect cable and mounting bracket to speed the termination once the box and wire are there. Choose by what the wall already gives you: box and cable in place favors the MTK15, bare wall favors the wireless approach.
13) If a facility wants to move to mobile credentials later, which reader supports that path?
The MTK15 is the one to specify for that.
