Schlage Electronics SCH-RC11 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the RC11 read the 125 kHz prox cards we already issue, or do we have to reissue credentials?
You can keep your existing cards. The RC11 is a multi-technology reader that handles standard proximity credentials at 125 kHz alongside 13.56 MHz smart credentials, plus NFC and Bluetooth mobile credentials. That is what makes it a migration reader: run legacy prox and smart or mobile credentials on the same door while you transition. It carries credential parity with Schlage readers and wireless locks as standard; ISONAS credential parity is a factory orderable option, specified as CE-5902-0403.
2) How do I power the RC11 at the door?
Two options. Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af, Class 0) runs power and data on a single cable, which is the usual choice because it removes the separate power run to the opening. Or DC power at 10-13 VDC. Do not put 24 VDC on it, that voltage is not approved for the device, and a 24V supply left over from a strike or maglock circuit is the mistake to watch for here.
3) Can the Schlage RC11 mount on an aluminum storefront mullion?
Yes, that is what the form factor is for. It is a mullion-size reader, the narrow vertical profile that fits the stile of an aluminum glass door frame where a single-gang or wall-size reader will not. Schlage also rates it for interior, exterior, metal and non-metal installation environments, so mounting it on metal framing is accounted for.
4) What happens at the door if the network goes down?
Access keeps working. The RC11 runs in local mode when the connection drops or when you configure it that way, making decisions at the device with capacity for 64,000 credentials, 5,000 events and 32 time schedules. In host mode it is real-time to the host, with credential, event, schedule and holiday capacity set by your host programming. Local mode is also used deliberately for faster response and less network traffic.
5) What is the difference between the Schlage RC11 reader controller and the Securitron R100 wireless card reader?
The Schlage RC11 is a mullion-size multi-technology reader controller that makes access decisions at the door itself: it reads Bluetooth, NFC, 13.56 MHz smart credentials and 125 kHz proximity credentials, connects over 10/100 Ethernet on a single PoE cable, and carries three configurable inputs for door position, request to exit and auxiliary. The Securitron R100 is a surface mounted wireless card reader in the RH100 series. If the opening needs an IP-connected device that holds credentials and schedules locally (64,000 credentials, 5,000 events and 32 time schedules in local mode), the RC11 is the one built for that role; if the run is a surface mounted wireless reader position, the R100 addresses it.
6) I need a card reader for a narrow aluminum storefront mullion - is the Securitron R100 an option or should I use the Schlage RC11?
The Schlage RC11 is built for that location: it is a mullion mount device in a mullion form factor, rated for interior, exterior, metal and non-metal installation environments and an operating range of -31 degrees F to 151 degrees F. The Securitron R100 is a surface mounted reader, so it is specified for a flat surface rather than a narrow mullion face. For a glass front storefront stile, the RC11 is the one dimensioned for it.
7) Will the RC11 survive outdoors in a cold climate?
Its operating range is -31 F to 151 F (-40 C to 66 C), and it is approved for exterior as well as interior mounting. That covers northern-tier winters and sun-loaded south-facing storefronts. Tamper detection is built in via an accelerometer, which matters on a perimeter door where the reader is on the unsecured side.
8) What cabling and network setup does the RC11 need?
Cat5e, Cat6 or better, on 10/100 Ethernet, half or full duplex. It supports DHCP addressing and both network host and client modes, and communication is secured with TLS 1.2. If you are pulling one PoE drop per door, that single cable is the whole run.
9) Can I wire a door contact and a request-to-exit device into the RC11?
Yes. Three configurable inputs are provided: Door Position Switch (DPS), Request to Exit (REX) and Auxiliary (AUX), with the REX and AUX being general purpose. So a door position switch and a REX motion sensor or exit device switch land on the reader controller itself rather than a separate panel. Status feedback at the door comes from an LED plus an audible indicator you can turn on or off.
10) RC11 versus a wireless card reader like the Securitron R100, which one fits my job?
Different install paths. The RC11 is a wired IP device: one PoE drop per door back to your network, with the controller and credential decision built into the reader. The Securitron R100, an RH100 Series surface mounted wireless card reader, is the option to look at when you cannot pull a cable to the opening. If the network run is feasible, the RC11 gives you the direct IP path into open PACS platforms; if it is not, wireless is how the door gets covered.
11) Do I still need a separate access control panel if I use the Schlage RC11 instead of a plain reader like the Securitron R100?
The Schlage RC11 is an all-in-one IP reader controller - it makes the access decision at the device and connects to open PACS platforms including Pure Access Cloud over a single PoE Ethernet run, with door position, request to exit and auxiliary inputs wired directly to it. The Securitron R100 is a wireless card reader, so the credential decision and door wiring live elsewhere in that architecture. Buyers standardizing on a decentralized IP design specify the RC11; buyers extending an existing wireless reader scheme look at the R100.
12) How is the RC11 commissioned on site?
Configuration is done through the ENGAGE mobile app, so a tech sets the device up from a phone at the opening rather than hauling a laptop and a programming cable to each door. Useful to know when you are scoping labor across a lot of perimeter doors.
13) What color does the RC11 mullion reader come in?
Black is the finish offered. On aluminum storefront that generally reads fine against dark anodized framing; against clear anodized or painted white framing it will contrast, which is worth knowing before you standardize a whole building on it.
