Schlage L460B 626 IS-DND – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L460 indicator deadbolt fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
That is the only thickness it is built for. The L460 small case mortise deadbolt is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors with a 2-3/4 inch backset. If your door is 1-3/8 inches or thicker than 1-3/4, this is the wrong lock. For a thinner leaf, the Accentra D292 cylindrical indicator deadbolt covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches, though it is a Grade 2 cylindrical unit rather than a Grade 1 mortise case.
2) Do I have to order a right hand or left hand version of the L460?
No handing to specify. The L460 is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand openings. That makes it simpler for a property manager standardizing across a floor of restrooms or utility doors, since the same part number works on every leaf.
3) What size mortise pocket does the L460 need in the door?
The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches, with a 5-9/16 x 1-1/4 inch face. That is a small case, considerably shorter than a full L9000 mortise body, so it suits narrow utility doors and openings where there is not room for a full-size case. The standard strike is a 10-079, 1-1/8 x 3-1/2 inch square corner strike with box, prepped to ANSI 115.5.
4) Will the L460 mortise deadbolt latch the door on its own, or do I still need a latchset?
It is deadbolt only, thrown by key from outside or by the thumbturn inside. There is no latchbolt, so the door will not stay closed unless you add a separate latch or passage set. Schlage builds the L400 family as the primary lock where no latching is required, restrooms and small utility doors being the usual cases, and as an auxiliary bolt above a latchset elsewhere.
5) Can I choose whether the occupancy indicator shows on the inside or the outside of the door?
Yes, and it is the main ordering decision. Interior side indicators are the IS options, exterior side indicators are the OS options. Each side is offered in four legends: DO NOT DISTURB, UNLOCKED/LOCKED, VACANT/OCCUPIED, and symbols only. Pick the side by who needs to read the status. Restrooms and single-occupancy rooms normally want the OS VACANT/OCCUPIED so a person in the corridor can see it; a conference or exam room being secured from within often wants the IS LOCKED legend.
6) Does the Schlage L460 come with a cylinder, or do I need to order one separately?
As built for 7-pin SFIC prep less core, the lock takes a small format interchangeable core that is not supplied with it, so you supply or order the core to match your existing SFIC system. The L460 is a single cylinder function, keyed outside with a thumbturn inside. Schlage's standard cylinder reference for the series is a conventional 6-pin in the S123 keyway; if you want that instead of interchangeable core, say so on the order.
7) Should I use a mortise indicator deadbolt like the L460 or a cylindrical indicator deadbolt?
It comes down to the door prep. The L460 requires a mortise pocket in the door edge, 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inch case, so it is the choice on doors already prepped for mortise hardware or on new work where you can specify the prep. If the door has a bored prep, a cylindrical unit is the far easier install: the Accentra D292 thumbturn indicator deadbolt and the Hager 3216, which lists a 1 inch throw, are both cylindrical Grade 2 options, and the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 adds an ADA thumbturn. You get Grade 1 and a steel mortise case with the Schlage; you get a simpler retrofit with the cylindrical ones.
8) What is the difference between the Schlage L460 and the Hager 3216 indicator deadbolt?
The Schlage L460 is a Grade 1 mortise deadbolt actuated by key or thumbturn, with a single cylinder and a 2-3/4 inch backset, and it is non-handed. The Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn x occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The L460 gives you keyed override from the outside; the 3216 is the thumbturn-and-indicator arrangement without that keyed function.
9) Can I get several of these Schlage indicator deadbolts keyed alike on one key?
Yes. Keying is a required selection: keyed different is standard, keyed alike is available when you want one key to operate a group of locks, or you can select no cylinder for less-cylinder orders. There is also a free text field for special keying such as master keying into an existing system or a particular keyway.
10) Is the L460 strong enough for a high traffic commercial restroom?
Heavy duty, Grade 1, and a commercial spec lock. The mortise case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, and the deadbolt functions in the L Series carry an anti-saw pin in the bolt to resist cut-through. Schlage certifies L400 under ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 1. Among indicator deadbolts the alternatives drop a grade or two, for example the Hager 3216 and Falcon D271 are Grade 2 and the Cal-Royal IND84 is Grade 3.
11) Is there an indicator lock option for a lever lockset rather than a separate deadbolt?
The L460 is a bolt and thumbturn only, with no handle. If you need occupancy status built into the operating trim, look at a privacy lever lock with a visual indicator instead, such as the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL, a Grade 1 extra heavy duty privacy lever lock listed as fire rated for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, or the Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with visual status indicator. Falcon's H2171 goes a different route, an interconnected public restroom lock with occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt.
12) Is the Schlage L460 an electrified lock or can it be tied to an access control system?
Mechanical only. The L460 is not an electronic lock, and it has no solenoid, monitoring, or voltage option. The electrified functions with 12V/24V auto detect, EL/EU selection, RX, DPS and bolt monitoring belong to other L Series lock bodies, not this small case deadbolt. For an opening that has to release on a credential or a fire alarm signal, specify an electrified L Series mortise lock instead.
13) Does the Schlage L460 meet Buy American requirements for a government project?
Schlage states the L Series meets the Buy American Act. The L460 is also certified Grade 1 under the L400 listing to ANSI/BHMA A156.36, with the ANSI/BHMA function designation E06071, which is the number a spec writer will want on the hardware schedule.
14) I only need a vacant/occupied indicator with no key at all - is there a simpler option than the L460?
Yes. The Schlage L460 is keyed, with a single conventional 6-pin cylinder in the S123 keyway as standard, so it carries the key control side of the job. If nobody needs a key override, the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock with a vacant/occupied indicator on the outside and is non-keyed, fitting 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Falcon D271 is another non-lever route, a Grade 2 medium duty deadbolt with occupancy indicator and thumbturn inside.
15) Can one lock cover a public restroom door instead of pairing the L460 with a separate latch?
The Falcon H2171 is an interconnected public restroom lock with occupancy indicator on a single cylinder deadbolt, Grade 2, so latching and deadbolting come as one interconnected unit. The Schlage L460 is a standalone mortise deadbolt, single cylinder, non-handed, prepped to a 10-079 1-1/8 by 3-1/2 inch square corner strike and box to ANSI 115.5. Choose the H2171 for a bored door with one device; choose the L460 where the deadbolt is mortised and the latch is handled separately.
16) Will the L460 match the finish of the other Schlage lever locks in my building?
It is offered in 619 satin nickel, 626 satin chrome, and 630 satin stainless steel, all common commercial finishes that read close to the brushed hardware on most L Series openings. If your existing doors are 626 or 630, you can hold the same number here. Note the L460 has a thumbturn, not a lever, so there is no lever design to match.
