When you choose a Schlage lock you can have confidence you’ve chosen a solution that will provide protection at the most critical moments.

Mechanical, wired electrified, wireless electronic and multi-point solutions allow a common aesthetic and consistent user experience throughout the building while lowering the total cost of ownership. And, with an extensive list of functions, keying, trim, levers and finish options the L Series works for any application.

L Mechanical Overview

The Schlage L Series has long been the benchmark for mortise locks. Beyond strength and security – it offers tremendous flexibility to allow it to meet the needs of most every application. The ability to suite across electronic, tubular, exit trim, and multi-point locks allows the Schlage L Series mortise lock to integrate seamlessly into any environment.

L Wired Electrified Overview

The wired electrified L Series is ideal for new construction and high traffic areas where hardwired power ensures continuous operation and where electrified door prep, hinges and wiring can easily be incorporated into the building. The electrified L Series is regularly used as part of an access control system for high security areas, or independently in areas that require a remote access switch.

LE Wireless Electronic Overview

The Schlage LE wireless mortise lock with ENGAGE™ technology is designed to affordably extend electronic access control deeper into the building beyond traditional perimeter and high security openings. The LE is ideal for commercial real estate, K-12, higher education, assisted living, medical offices, or multi-family applications. Facilities can benefit from the enhanced security, efficiency, and convenience of upgrading to electronic credentials

Schlage L462L 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage L462L mortise deadbolt come with cylinders, or do I have to order those separately?
The L462L ships less conventional cylinder, so the cylinders are not included. It is a double cylinder deadbolt, meaning it needs two cylinders, one for each side, and both are ordered separately. Schlage's standard cylinder for the L Series is a conventional 6-pin in the S123 keyway, so if you are not keying into an existing system that is the default to match. Ordering less cylinder is how most locksmiths buy it when the building is already on a master key system or an interchangeable core.
2) Will the Schlage L462L fit a 1-3/4 inch door, and what backset does it need?
1-3/4 inches is the door thickness the L462L is built for, and it takes a 2-3/4 inch backset. The small mortise case measures 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches, with a 5-9/16 x 1-1/4 inch face. If your door is thinner or thicker than 1-3/4 inches, that is a different order, not a field adjustment.
3) What strike and door prep does the L462L mortise deadbolt use?
It comes with the 10-079 strike, a 1-1/8 x 3-1/2 inch square corner strike with a dust box, cut to ANSI 115.5 prep. If your frame is already prepped to ANSI 115.5 from a previous mortise lock, the strike drops in. Frames prepped for the larger 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 ANSI curved lip strike used on the L9000 body will show a gap, so check which opening you are working on before you cut.
4) Is the Schlage L462 rated Grade 1, and is it approved for a fire door?
Grade 1, and the L400 small case series it belongs to certifies to ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 1. On fire openings, the L Series carries UL 10C and CAN/ULC-S104 3-hour fire listing, listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. Its BHMA certification number is E06071. For a hospital, school, or correctional spec that calls out Grade 1 institutional hardware, that is the line the submittal needs.
5) I need an occupancy indicator deadbolt but a mortise prep is too much work on my door. What else is there?
A mortise case means routing a pocket into the door edge, which is a big job on an existing wood door. If you want a bored prep instead, the Accentra D292 is a Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator function covering 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors. Cal-Royal also offers the IND90-G2 indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn. The L462 stays the choice where the spec demands Grade 1 mortise hardware.
6) Is the Schlage L462L a restroom privacy lock, or do I need something different for a single occupancy toilet room?
For a restroom you usually want a privacy or public restroom function, not a double cylinder deadbolt. Double cylinder means a key is required from both sides, which is the wrong behavior for an occupant locking themselves in. Look instead at the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL, a Grade 1 extra heavy duty privacy lever lock with visual status indicator for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, the Accentra AUYPL02 Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with visual status indicator, or the Falcon H2171 public restroom interconnected lock with occupancy indicator.
7) I need key access from both sides - do the indicator deadbolts from other brands do that?
The L462L is keyed on both sides as a double cylinder mortise deadbolt, with a conventional 6-pin S123 keyway cylinder as standard. The common indicator alternatives are not keyed that way: the Hager 3216, Accentra D292, Arrow E50 and Cal-Royal IND90-G2 are all thumbturn by indicator functions, and the Arrow E50 is non-keyed. If both sides must take a key, stay with the L462L rather than substituting one of those.
8) Do I need to specify handing when I order a Schlage L462 mortise deadbolt?
No handing to specify. The L462 is non-handed, so the same lock works on a left or right hand opening with no field reversal step. That is one less thing to get wrong on a multi-door order, and it means a property manager can stock one part number for a whole corridor.
9) How does the L462L deadbolt actually operate from each side?
Key or thumbturn throws the bolt. As a double cylinder configuration, it is keyed from both sides rather than free-turning from the inside, which is the setup used where a door has glass beside it or where you do not want the bolt retracted without a key. It is a straight mechanical deadbolt with no latch and no lever trim, so it is installed as a secondary lock or on a door that does not need a knob.
10) Can I key the L462 into the rest of my Schlage L Series openings?
Yes. It is a keyed lock and the L Series is built to suite across electronic, tubular, exit trim, and multi-point locks, so a double cylinder deadbolt on a stair or storage door can run on the same key system as the lever locks down the hall. Since it ships less cylinder, you supply cylinders cut to your existing keyway rather than being stuck with the factory S123.
11) For a single-user restroom, is there an option that combines latch and indicator deadbolt in one?
The L462L handles the bolt only, with a deadbolt actuated by key or thumbturn, so it pairs with separate trim for latching. The Falcon H2171 is a public restroom interconnected lock, Grade 2, with occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt, which puts the latch and the indicating deadbolt on one device. The Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL takes the lever-privacy route instead, a Grade 1 privacy/bed/bath lock with visual status indicator.
12) What is a lighter-duty indicator deadbolt than the Schlage L462L?
The L462L is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise deadbolt. Lighter-duty indicator deadbolts include the Falcon D271, a Grade 2 medium duty one-sided deadbolt with occupancy indicator, and the Cal-Royal IND84, a Grade 3 indicator deadbolt with thumbturn by indicator function. The Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is another indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn. None of those is a keyed mortise case, so the door prep and function differ from the L462L.
13) Can I use an Emtek thumbturn privacy bolt in place of the Schlage L462L?
No. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square and 8683 Disk are thumbturn privacy bolts with double rosettes and an indicator, intended to be used with a brass passage set on residential-style openings. The L462L is a commercial Grade 1 mortise deadbolt, double cylinder and keyed, with a 4-7/16 inch by 3-5/8 inch by 1 inch mortise case. They serve different openings and different door preps.
14) Which indicator lock should I pick for a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches?
The L462L is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors. Among indicator alternatives, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors as a Grade 1 privacy/bed/bath lever lock with visual status indicator, so it reaches a thicker door while changing the function from a keyed deadbolt to privacy lever trim.
15) Is the Arrow E50 a substitute for the Schlage L462L on an exit door?
They do different jobs. The Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock, non-keyed, showing a vacant/occupied indicator on the outside, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The L462L is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt that takes a key on both sides, non-handed, with a 2-3/4 inch backset. If the opening needs keyed control from the outside, the E50 will not provide it.
16) What finishes does the Schlage L462L institution deadbolt come in?
Nine finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze clear, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel clear coated, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, and 630 satin stainless. For institutional work, 626 and 630 are the two that normally match existing L Series trim already hanging in the building.
17) What is the mortise case made of, and will it hold up in a high traffic institutional building?
The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, rated heavy duty and built for commercial service. That plating is the corrosion finish Schlage uses on the concealed case so it survives inside a hollow metal door over years. Paired with the Grade 1 rating, this is the deadbolt specified for dorms, correctional, and healthcare openings rather than light commercial infill.
18) Is the Schlage L462 an electrified or access control lock?
No, the L462 is purely mechanical. If the opening needs to tie into access control, the L Series offers wired electrified versions for new construction where power, electrified hinges and wiring can be run, and the LE wireless electronic mortise lock with ENGAGE technology for extending credentials further into a building without pulling wire.
