Schlage L463P-626-RH-XB11-720 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L463 mortise deadbolt fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset prep?
That is exactly the prep the L463 is built for: 2-3/4 inch backset, 1-3/4 inch door thickness. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches, so the door needs a mortise pocket cut to that size. If your openings are thicker or thinner than 1-3/4 inches, this is not the part for them.
2) What does classroom function mean on a Schlage L463 deadbolt, and can a teacher lock the door from inside?
No, and that is the point of the function. On the L463 the deadbolt is thrown by key only, from the keyed side. The inside thumbturn will retract the bolt but cannot extend it. So anyone inside can always get out and can unlock the door, but the door can only be secured with a key. If you want staff to be able to lock down from inside the room without stepping into the corridor, this function will not do it.
3) Does the L463 latch the door, or do I still need a latchset on the opening?
Deadbolt only, no latch. The L400 small case locks are meant as the primary lock where nothing needs to latch, restrooms and small utility doors, or as an auxiliary deadbolt above a separate latching lockset. If the door has to stay closed on its own you need a latching mortise lock as well, such as the Corbin Russwin ML2003 classroom lockset or the Cal-Royal NM8070 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch.
4) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the Schlage L463?
Yes. The L463 is a handed lock, ordered left hand or right hand, so you need to know which way the door swings and which side it is hinged before the order goes in. Stand outside the opening: hinges on your left is left hand. Get it wrong and the thumbturn ends up on the wrong face of the door.
5) Will the Schlage L463 work with my existing ANSI strike prep in the frame?
It should. The L463 ships with a 10-079 strike, 1-1/8 by 3-1/2 inches with square corners plus the box, prepped to ANSI 115.5. That is the standard commercial frame cutout, so on a frame already prepped to 115.5 the strike drops in. Frames with a radius corner cutout will need the corners dressed or a radius strike substituted.
6) Can I key the Schlage L463 into the master key system I already run on my building?
The L463 comes with a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the S123 keyway as standard, and can be ordered keyed different, keyed alike across a group of locks, or less cylinder if you pin your own. There is also a P option for a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway. If you run an existing Schlage system, order the less cylinder version and fit your own cylinder, or send your keying detail with the order.
7) I need a classroom lock that can be locked down from inside the room. What should I use instead of the Schlage L463?
The L463 cannot do it, because its thumbturn only retracts the bolt. For inside lockdown, look at an intruder or classroom security function instead: the BEST 45HCA heavy duty mortise lockbody with intruder function, the Marks USA LA318GJ classroom security indicator mortise lockset, or the TownSteel FME-4000 electronic intruder classroom mortise lock. All three are built around the lockdown-from-inside problem the L463 deliberately does not solve.
8) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage L463 classroom mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The Schlage L463 is a keyed classroom-function mortise lock built on the L Series with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1-3/4 inch door thickness. The closest cross-brand match is the Corbin Russwin ML2003, a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset in the ML2000 Series rated for a 1-3/4 inch door. The Cal-Royal NM8070 is also a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and it carries an auxiliary deadlatch. All three carry Grade 1 and share the same door thickness, so a classroom opening specified for the L463 can be met by either of those two.
9) Our doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inch. What mortise lock covers that when the L463 does not?
The L463 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. For thicker openings, the Hager 3810S and 3810E cover 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch on a 2-3/4 inch backset in passage function, and the Hager 3840S covers 1-3/4 to 2 inch in privacy function. On the ornamental side, the Baldwin 6301 lever by lever entry/apartment mortise lock body is listed for 1-3/4 inch and over on a 2-1/2 inch backset, and the Baldwin 6310 storeroom body covers 1-3/8 inch and over. Note the backset change on the Baldwin bodies against the 2-3/4 inch backset of the L463.
10) Is there a mortise lock that lets a teacher lock the classroom door from inside during a lockdown, rather than by key like the L463?
The L463 requires a key to throw the deadbolt, so the door must be secured from the corridor side. For inside-initiated lockdown, the BEST 45HCA heavy duty mortise lockbody is an intruder function unit, and the TownSteel FME-4000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset with RFID for a 1-3/4 inch door, the same door thickness the L463 is built for.
11) Is the Schlage L463 rated Grade 1, and is it strong enough for a school or hospital corridor?
Grade 1, heavy duty, and rated for commercial use. The L400 small case locks are tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 1, and the deadbolt functions carry an anti-saw pin in the bolt to stop cut-through attacks. The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. Its ANSI/BHMA function designation is E06091.
12) Is the Schlage L463 an electronic lock, and what are my options if I want credential access on that door?
Purely mechanical, key and thumbturn, no wiring and no power. If the opening needs card or keypad access, the mortise options run to the Schlage CO-100 standalone electronic mortise lock with keypad reader, the Schlage Electronics LEMD ENGAGE wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader, or the Alarm Lock DL3500CR Trilogy electronic mortise lock with classroom function and 300 user codes.
13) Will the Schlage L463 trim match the other L Series lever sets and Von Duprin exit devices already in my building?
It is part of the same L Series family, and Schlage states that all L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products. The L463 itself carries a B100 Series style thumbturn rather than a lever, so what you are matching on that door is finish and thumbturn style, not lever design.
14) Can I put the Schlage L463 on a fire rated door?
The L Series is UL and cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet, with the letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front to show the listing. Note that L463 is a deadbolt-only lock with no latching, so on a fire door it works as an auxiliary bolt above a latching, self-latching lockset, not as the door's sole hardware.
15) I need a plain deadbolt on a mortise-prepped door, not a classroom function. What else is there?
If key-only throwing from one side is more than you need, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on the same 2-3/4 inch backset, keyed both sides with no thumbturn. The Alarm Lock DL4500 is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with keypad if you want codes instead of keys. The L463 sits between them: keyed outside, thumbturn inside that can only release.
16) I only need a mortise deadbolt on a utility door, not a classroom function. What is a simpler option than the L463?
The L463 adds classroom control to a mortise deadbolt: key throws the bolt and the thumbturn retracts but cannot extend it. If you do not need that restriction, the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a mortise lock with a straight deadbolt function and requires no handing, while the L463 is a handed lock. Where both sides need a key and no thumbturn is wanted, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, the same backset the L463 uses.
17) Is a Sargent 130KB thumbturn a substitute for the L463 with XB11-720?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard mortise thumbturn in the 8200 Series, and the Sargent 130W is a mortise thumbturn with a round backplate in the 7800 Series - those are trim pieces, not locks. The L463 with XB11-720 is a complete keyed mortise lock body with a 4-7/16 by 3-5/8 by 1 inch case, a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the S123 keyway, and a 10-079 strike to ANSI 115.5 prep. A thumbturn alone gives you no bolt, no cylinder, and no case.
18) We want keypad access on the classroom doors instead of a key. What replaces the L463?
The L463 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed to a conventional 6-pin S123 cylinder. For keypad entry with classroom function, the Alarm Lock DL3500CR is a Grade 1 electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes and classroom function, and the Alarm Lock DL2700CR is a Grade 1 classroom-function electronic mortise lock with a weatherproof design; both fit doors 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch, which covers the 1-3/4 inch door the L463 is built for. For credential-based classroom control, the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID on a 1-3/4 inch door.
19) What is the difference between the Schlage L463 and a storeroom-function mortise lock?
The L463 is classroom function: the key throws the deadbolt and the thumbturn retracts it but cannot extend it, so the bolt can only be set by someone with a key. A storeroom lock keeps the outside trim locked at all times and is opened by key. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for a 1-3/4 inch door with an interchangeable core option. Storeroom locks give you a latching lever set; the L463 controls a deadbolt.
20) Can I use a Hager 3800 Series mortise lock in place of the L463 on a classroom door?
Not for the same job. The Hager 3810S and 3810E are Grade 1 passage mortise locks on a 2-3/4 inch backset - the same backset as the L463 - but passage function has no key and no locking. The Hager 3850E is an office function lock that is non-keyed. The L463 is a keyed single-cylinder lock whose deadbolt is thrown by key, so if the door must be secured by key, none of the 3800 Series options above will do it.
21) Is the L463 handed, and which comparable mortise locks avoid a handing decision?
Yes, the L463 is a handed lock and is ordered left hand or right hand. If you would rather not commit to a hand at order time, the Kaba Ilco 185 Series mortise lock is supplied with no handing, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation, and the BEST 45H heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function is also field reversible. Those three differ from the L463 in function, so confirm the function matches the opening before substituting.
22) We need the lock to release on a card credential or to be controlled from an access control panel. What takes the place of the L463?
The L463 is a mechanical lock with no electronic operation. For credentialed access, the Dormakaba Saffire LX-I-M002 is an electronic RFID mortise lockset with BLE mobile access at BHMA Grade 2, and the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125 kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating. For a hardwired opening tied to a panel, the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V or 24V, and the Command Access ML190 is a heavy-duty motorized storeroom mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC.
23) What mortise lock gives a restroom or utility door privacy locking instead of the key control the L463 provides?
On the L463 the deadbolt can only be extended by key, so an occupant cannot lock themselves in. Where the occupant needs to set the lock, the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset - matching the L463 backset - for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inch, and the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with a deadbolt for a 1-3/4 inch door.
24) For a dormitory or corridor door where the deadbolt must be settable from inside, what is the alternative to the L463?
The L463 thumbturn retracts the deadbolt but cannot extend it, so the bolt cannot be set from the room side. The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, which is the arrangement dormitory and corridor openings usually call for. Both are heavy duty Grade 1 mortise locks.
25) What finishes does the Schlage L463 mortise deadbolt come in to match the rest of my door hardware?
Twelve finishes, covering the usual commercial and decorative ranges: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. For a building already standardized on 626 satin chrome or 630 satin stainless, both are stocked options.
26) Does the Schlage L463 meet Buy American and ADA requirements for a government or institutional job?
Schlage states the L Series meets the Buy American Act and meets ADA requirements. For the California Referenced Standards Code, all L Series levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less comply. The L463 is a thumbturn and cylinder rather than a lever, so the lever return clause applies to the levered products in the family.
27) Are the Emtek mortise entrance locksets an alternative to the L463?
No. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function - trim that mounts on the door with no working bolt and no cylinder. The L463 is a keyed single-cylinder lock whose deadbolt is thrown by key, with a conventional 6-pin S123 cylinder and a 10-079 ANSI 115.5 strike. Use the Emtek units only on an inactive leaf or a false door.
