Schlage L496B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L496 indicator deadbolt fit a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
The L496 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door, which is the standard commercial thickness. It uses a 2-3/4 inch backset and a small mortise case measuring 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches, so the door needs a mortise pocket that accepts that case. Thinner doors are not covered by this configuration.
2) Does the Schlage L496 need to be ordered left or right hand?
No handing to specify. The L496 is non-handed, so one part covers left and right swings, which is what you want when you are buying for a run of restroom or utility doors and do not want to track handing per opening.
3) What strike and door prep does the Schlage L496 mortise deadbolt require?
It ships with the 10-079 strike, a 1-1/8 by 3-1/2 inch square corner strike with box, and the frame prep follows ANSI 115.5. If your existing frame is already cut to ANSI 115.5 with a square corner strike opening, the L496 drops into it; a radius corner frame will need the strike lip swapped or the prep filed.
4) Is the L496 a full lock or just a deadbolt, and where should it be used?
It is deadbolt only, with no latchbolt, so it does not hold the door closed on its own. Schlage L400 Series locks are meant as the primary lock where no latching is needed, such as restrooms and small utility doors, or as an auxiliary deadbolt alongside another lock. If the door needs to latch, you want a lockset instead.
5) Does the Schlage L496 come with a cylinder core?
No core is included on either cylinder option. You choose B, a 7-pin SFIC prep less core, or J, a 6-pin FSIC less core, and supply the core from your own keying system. If you are not running an interchangeable core program, the series standard is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the S123 keyway.
6) How does the Schlage L496 differ from a cylindrical or tubular indicator deadbolt like the Accentra D292 or Hager 3216?
The L496 is a mortise deadbolt, so it needs a mortise pocket in the door edge and is Grade 1. The Accentra D292 is a cylindrical indicator deadbolt with thumbturn, Grade 2, and covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors and carries a fire rating. If the door is already bored rather than mortised, the cylindrical options are the retrofit; if the door has a mortise pocket, the L496 is the Grade 1 choice.
7) I need an indicator on a restroom door but I also need the door to latch. What should I use instead of the L496?
The L496 throws a deadbolt only, so pair it with a passage set or pick a lock that latches. The Falcon H2171 is a public restroom interconnected lock with occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt, Grade 2. The Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 privacy lever lock with visual status indicator for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors and is fire rated. The Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with visual status indicator.
8) The Schlage L496 is keyed - what indicator deadbolt should I use on a restroom that does not need a key outside?
The L496 is a keyed cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt, so the outside is operated by a cylinder. For a restroom where no outside key is wanted, the Arrow E50 is a non-keyed Grade 2 exit deadlock with a vacant/occupied indicator on the outside, and the Falcon D271 is a Grade 2 one-sided deadbolt with occupancy indicator and thumbturn inside. The Cal-Royal IND84 is a Grade 3 thumbturn x indicator deadbolt for lighter traffic.
9) What does the chevron indicator on the Schlage L496 actually show, and can you see it from down the corridor?
The L496 is a cylinder outside by thumbturn inside deadbolt with a chevron occupancy indicator, so throwing the bolt from inside changes the indicator on the corridor side. Schlage's indicator is a 180 degree visibility design, meaning it reads from an angle down the hallway rather than only straight on.
10) Is the Schlage L496 rated Grade 1, and does it meet an indicator standard?
Grade 1, heavy duty, and the L400 family is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.36 Grade 1. The listed ANSI/BHMA function code is E06071. Lock body material is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating.
11) Will the Schlage L496 key into the same system as the rest of my Schlage openings?
Yes, it is a keyed device on the outside. Order the B option for a 7-pin small format interchangeable core or J for a 6-pin full size interchangeable core and drop in the core from your existing system. Straight conventional keying uses a 6-pin cylinder in the S123 keyway.
12) Will a Schlage L496 fit the same mortise pocket as a standard L9000 mortise lockset?
No. The L496 uses a small case measuring 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches, which is a smaller pocket than a full mortise lockset body. Treat it as its own prep rather than assuming it drops into an existing L9000 cutout, and use the L Series templates for the pocket and cylinder hole locations.
13) Can I use a privacy bolt with an indicator instead of the Schlage L496 on a residential-style door?
The L496 is a commercial Grade 1 mortise deadbolt. For a residential or light-commercial door where a passage set handles the latching, Emtek offers thumbturn privacy bolts with double rosettes and an indicator in the Wilshire 8383, Watford 8483, Square 8583 and Disk 8683 styles, each intended for use with a brass passage set. These are privacy/bed/bath function rather than a keyed deadbolt, so there is no outside key override as there is on the L496.
14) Is the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL a substitute for the Schlage L496?
They solve the same visibility problem in different ways. The L496 is a mortise deadbolt with no latching, keyed outside and thumbturn inside with a chevron indicator, used as a primary lock where no latch is required or as an auxiliary bolt. The Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty privacy/bed/bath lever lock with visual status indicator, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch - it provides the latching and lever operation the L496 does not. If the opening already has a latch set and only needs a bolt with status, the L496 fits; if one device must do both, the CLX3320 is the lever-based route.
15) What indicator option is there for a public restroom where the lock also needs to latch and be keyed?
The Schlage L496 is a deadbolt only, keyed cylinder outside with thumbturn and chevron indicator inside, on a 2-3/4 inch backset mortise case. For a public restroom needing latching plus a keyed bolt in one assembly, the Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt. The L496 remains the Grade 1 choice when the bolt is separate from the latch set.
16) Which finishes does the Schlage L496 indicator deadbolt come in?
Nine finishes, and both cylinder preps are offered in all of them: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze clear coated, 613 dark oxidized satin bronze oil rubbed, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless and 630 satin stainless. For matching an existing building, 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the usual commercial defaults.
17) Is the Schlage L496 an electronic or access-controlled lock?
Purely mechanical. There is no electrified option on the L496 itself, no wiring and no power required. Electrified configurations in the Schlage L family live in the L9000 lockset functions, not on this small case deadbolt.
