1) Will the Schlage L9044 fit my restroom door, and what prep does the door need?
One thickness only: the L9044 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door, with a 2-3/4 inch backset. It is a mortise lock, so the door edge has to be routed for a pocket that takes a case measuring 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches, plus the through-holes for the lever spindle and the thumbturn and coin turn hubs. That is a different prep from the two round bores a cylindrical lock uses, so a door already bored for a knob or lever set has to be re-prepped to the Schlage L Series template. If your doors are 1-3/8 inch, or you do not want to cut a mortise pocket, look at a Grade 1 cylindrical privacy lock with an indicator instead, such as the Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series.
2) How does the coin turn on the Schlage L9044 work if someone locks themselves in the restroom?
That coin turn is the way in. The latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side unless the outside lever has been locked by the inside thumbturn or by the outside coin turn. Rotating the outside coin turn with a coin or a flat blade unlocks the outside lever, so a custodian or manager gets the door open without a key and without tools. The lock also releases on its own when the inside lever is turned or the door is closed, so an occupant cannot walk away leaving it locked. The L9044 is non-keyed, so there is no cylinder and no keying to specify with it.
3) Will the Schlage L9044 latch into the strike already in my frame, or do I have to re-prep it?

The one place hand matters is the lever design. The 12 lever is ordered as either left hand or right hand and you have to state which.
