Schlage L9040 M51A 626 OS-OCC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9040 privacy mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
The L9040 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors as standard, which is the usual commercial door thickness. It needs a 2-3/4 inch backset and a mortise pocket that takes a 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inch case. Thicker or thinner doors are handled through Schlage's door thickness options rather than the standard build, so on anything other than 1-3/4 inch you specify that at order. If you are working a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch range and want one part that covers both, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 privacy indicator lever lock listed for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, and the Accentra D292 indicator deadbolt covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch.
2) How does the vacant/occupied indicator on the Schlage L9040 work, and does it need power?
Purely mechanical. There is no electronics in the L9040 M51 indicator lock, so nothing to wire and nothing to fail when the building loses power. The outside face reads Vacant or Occupied in text, driven off the inside thumbturn: throw the thumbturn and the outside lever locks and the indicator flips to Occupied. Turning the inside lever, or simply closing the door, unlocks the outside lever and returns it to Vacant. That is what makes it work for single-occupancy restrooms and patient or resident rooms where staff need to read status from the corridor without trying the handle.
3) If someone locks themselves in, how do we get a Schlage L9040 open from the outside?
There is an emergency release built into the outside trim. Pop the emergency button out, put the emergency thumbturn into the access hole, and rotate to release the outside lever. The inside lever is always free, so an occupant can walk out at any time without touching the thumbturn. That combination, free egress inside plus outside emergency access, is why this function goes on bathroom and bedroom doors in hotels, dorms, and healthcare.
4) Will the Schlage L9040 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
Depends what is in there now. The L9040 ships with a 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box. The latchbolt is stainless with a 3/4 inch throw and an anti-friction tongue. If your frame is prepped for a standard ANSI mortise strike at that 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 size, it drops in. Frames prepped for a cylindrical lock will not accept it, since a mortise lock needs a pocket cut in the door edge for a 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inch case, not a 2-1/8 inch bore. Lip length is the other thing to check against your existing strike, because the lip has to clear the stop and protect the frame edge.
5) Can I replace a cylindrical privacy lever with the Schlage L9040, or do I need a different lock?
Not a straight swap. The L9040 is a mortise lock and needs a rectangular pocket cut in the door edge for the 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inch case, plus a 1-1/4 x 8 inch armor front. A door bored for a cylindrical lock has a round cross bore and no pocket, so converting means a new door or a mortising job. If the existing doors are cylindrical prep and you want the same vacant/occupied function without re-prepping, the Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator, and the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 privacy visual status lever lock.
6) Will a Schlage L9040 M51 work on a 2 inch thick restroom door?
The Schlage L9040 M51 is specified for 1-3/4 inch door thickness. For a thicker leaf, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL covers a 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch door thickness range and is a Grade 1 privacy/bedroom/bathroom visual status lever lock, so the indicator and the privacy function carry across to the thicker door.
7) Is an indicator deadbolt the same thing as a Schlage L9040 M51 privacy mortise lock?
No. The Schlage L9040 M51 is a lever lock: the latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side unless the outside is locked by the inside thumbturn, so it both latches and secures the opening. An indicator deadbolt such as the Hager 3216, a Grade 2 thumbturn x occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw, or the Arrow E50, a Grade 2 exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator outside, is bolt only and carries no lever, so the door still needs a separate passage latch to keep it closed. The Accentra D292 and Cal-Royal IND84 are also thumbturn x indicator deadbolts rather than lever locks.
8) The restroom needs to be keyed for staff access, not just a privacy thumbturn. What replaces the Schlage L9040 M51 there?
The Schlage L9040 M51 is non-keyed with a privacy/bed/bath function, unlocked from outside by removing the emergency button and rotating an emergency thumbturn in the access hole. For an opening that needs a key on the outside, the Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with an occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt, in a storeroom/public restroom function, so staff can open it with a key while the indicator still reads occupancy.
9) Which occupancy indicator products besides the Schlage L9040 M51 hold a Grade 1 rating for a facility standardizing on Grade 1?
The Schlage L9040 M51 is Grade 1 with an ANSI/BHMA F22 function designation. Among indicator products in the same family, the Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series privacy cylindrical lock with visual status indicator is Grade 1, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL extra heavy duty privacy visual status lever lock is Grade 1, and the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 indicator deadbolt with ADA thumbturn is Grade 1. The Hager 3216, Arrow E50, Accentra D292, Falcon D271 and Falcon H2171 are Grade 2, and the Cal-Royal IND84 is Grade 3.
10) Do I need to specify handing when ordering a Schlage L9040 indicator lock?
No handing to call out. The L9040 is non-handed, so the same lock works on a left or right hand door and you do not need to know the swing before you order. That also means one part number covers a whole floor of bathroom doors regardless of which way each one hangs, which is the point for anyone stocking spares.
11) Should I use a mortise indicator lock or an indicator deadbolt for a restroom?
A mortise indicator lock like the Schlage L9040 does the whole job in one case: latching, privacy locking, indicator, and lever operation, in a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial lock. An indicator deadbolt is a separate bolt added above a passage set, so it takes two preps and two operations by the user. Deadbolt route options include the Hager 3216 thumbturn x indicator with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Arrow E50 Grade 2 exit deadlock with a vacant/occupied indicator outside for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal IND84 in Grade 3 for lighter traffic. Go deadbolt when the door already has a passage set you are keeping. Go mortise when you are prepping new doors or want one heavy duty unit doing everything.
12) What do I have to choose when ordering the Schlage L9040 M51, besides the finish?
Three things. Finish, from 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless, and 643E aged bronze. Rose or escutcheon design, A wrought rose, B wrought rose, N escutcheon, or L full face escutcheon. Lever design is fixed at M51. Both sides of the door get the same lever, rose, and finish, and the matching latch and strike come with it. No keying to work out, since the L9040 is a non-keyed privacy function.
13) Will the Schlage L9040 levers match the other Schlage L Series and Von Duprin hardware in my building?
They suite. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300, and LT, so a corridor of exit devices and a run of bathroom doors can carry the same lever and finish. Within the L Series itself you have 33 lever designs, two knobs, five rose and three escutcheon designs to match against, and 14 finishes across the family. For a property manager standardizing a fleet of openings, that is the reason to stay inside the series rather than mixing brands.
14) Does the Schlage L9040 have a deadbolt as well as the latch?
No deadbolt on this one. The L9040 bath and bedroom privacy function uses only the 3/4 inch stainless latchbolt with an anti-friction tongue, thrown by the levers, with the inside thumbturn locking the outside lever rather than projecting a bolt. Other L9000 functions in the family do carry a 1 inch stainless deadbolt with an anti-saw pin. If a restroom door needs an actual bolt behind the indicator, the Hager 3216 is a thumbturn x indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors.
15) What is a lighter duty occupancy indicator option than the Schlage L9040 M51 for a low traffic restroom?
The Schlage L9040 M51 is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise privacy lock. Where a lighter product suits the opening, the Falcon D271 is a medium duty Grade 2 deadbolt with an occupancy indicator and an inside thumbturn, and the Cal-Royal IND84 is a Grade 3 indicator deadbolt with a thumbturn x indicator function. Both are bolts operated by thumbturn rather than lever locks, so plan on a separate latch for the door.
16) Can an Emtek indicator privacy bolt substitute for a Schlage L9040 M51 on a commercial restroom door?
They solve different jobs. The Schlage L9040 M51 is a commercial Grade 1 heavy duty mortise privacy lock that carries both the lever and the privacy function in one case. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square and 8683 Disk are thumbturn privacy bolts with double rosettes and an indicator, intended to be used with a brass passage set, so the lever function comes from a separate passage set and the bolt supplies the privacy and the indicator. They share the privacy/bed/bath function with the L9040 but arrive as a two-piece assembly.
17) Which indicator deadbolt has an ADA thumbturn if the Schlage L9040 M51 lever is not the right approach for the opening?
The Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a Grade 1 indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn and a thumbturn x indicator function. The Schlage L9040 M51 is also Grade 1 and meets ADA requirements, with a lever operating the latchbolt from either side unless the outside is locked by the inside thumbturn. The IND90-G2 places the ADA thumbturn on a bolt rather than a lever lock case.
