Schlage L9071P 03B 626 OS-OCC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9071 classroom security lock fit my door, and what thickness does it take?
The L9071 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the mortise pocket has to take a case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches. It's a handed lock, so you specify left or right hand when ordering. If your doors run thicker or thinner than 1-3/4 inches, the L escutcheon trim covers 1-3/8 inch through 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 inch through 2-1/4 inch.
2) What does the classroom security function on the Schlage L9071 actually do in a lockdown?
Classroom security means the door is locked and unlocked from inside the room by key, so a teacher never has to open the door and step into the corridor to secure it. The L9071 is a single cylinder keyed mortise lock, and the exterior indicator reads Vacant or Occupied so anyone in the hall can read the door status without trying the lever. Inside egress is always free. It's a non-deadbolt function, so security comes from the latchbolt rather than a throw bolt.
3) Can I use the Schlage L9071 on a fire rated classroom door?
Yes. The L9000 latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and Schlage lists the line UL/cUL for A label single doors up to 4 x 10 feet and pairs up to 8 x 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol are stamped on the latch front so an inspector can verify it in place. The L9071 is not one of the two excluded functions (L9076 and L9077).
4) Is the Schlage L9071 Grade 1, and does the cylinder choice change the rating?
Grade 1, tested to ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000 for both operational and security. The cylinder you order changes the security half of that: with a Schlage FSIC interchangeable core it drops to Grade 2 security, and with an SFIC core it drops to Grade 3 security. Operational stays Grade 1 in every case. If a spec sheet calls for Grade 1 security outright, order it with the conventional 6-pin cylinder rather than an interchangeable core.
5) Which cylinder option should I order on a Schlage L9071 if our district already has an interchangeable core system?
Six cylinder choices cover that. For a Schlage full size interchangeable core house, order J (FSIC less core) and drop your own cores in, or R to get it with a core in S123 keyway. T ships with a construction core for a job still in build-out. For a small format IC system, B comes prepped less core. P is the standard conventional 6-pin in C keyway, and L is less conventional cylinder if you're supplying your own. Keying is specified separately as keyed different or keyed alike.
6) What is the closest Grade 1 alternative to the Schlage L9071 indicator lock if the door takes a cylindrical prep instead of a mortise pocket?
The Schlage L9071 is a mortise lock with a 4-7/16" x 6-1/16" x 1" case, so it needs a mortise pocket in the door edge. Where the door is prepped for a cylindrical lock, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 visual status lever lock covering doors 1-3/4" to 2" thick and carrying a fire rating, and the Accentra AUYPL02 in the YPL Series is a Grade 1 cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator. Both differ in function from the L9071: they are privacy/bed/bath locks, while the L9071 is a keyed classroom security function with a single cylinder.
7) Can an indicator deadbolt be used instead of a Schlage L9071 to add occupancy status to a door that already has a lockset?
Yes, where the existing lockset stays in place and only status is being added, an indicator deadbolt handles it as a separate bore. The Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn x occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1" throw, fire rated, for 1-3/4" doors. The Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a Grade 1 indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn, and the Cal-Royal IND84 is a Grade 3 version of the thumbturn x indicator function. The Schlage L9071 is a different approach: one Grade 1 mortise case that combines the keyed classroom security function and the indicator in a single 2-3/4" backset prep.
8) Which indicator locks look like a substitute for the Schlage L9071 but will not work on a keyed classroom opening?
The indicator products that are not keyed cannot cover a classroom security opening. The Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock with a "Vacant/Occupied" indicator outside and is non-keyed. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square and 8683 Disk are thumbturn privacy bolts with double rosettes and an indicator, intended for use with a brass passage set. The Accentra D292 is a Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator function for 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" doors. All of these are thumbturn or privacy operated, while the Schlage L9071 is keyed with a single cylinder and a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard, so a key can control the outside lever.
9) What strike comes with the Schlage L9071 and will it work in my existing frame prep?
It ships with the 10-072 box strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches with square corners and a 1-3/16 inch lip. That's the standard ANSI mortise strike footprint, so a frame already prepped for a mortise lock strike normally takes it directly. Square corner, not radius, so a frame cut for radius corner strikes needs the corners squared or a different strike specified.
10) Should I use an indicator mortise lock or an indicator deadbolt for a classroom or staff room door?
Different jobs. The L9071 is a mortise lock with a keyed lever and Vacant/Occupied indicator, one device that latches, locks and shows status, and it fits a mortise pocket. An indicator deadbolt is an add-on above an existing passage set for rooms where you only need occupancy status and a bolt: the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 pairs the same function with an ADA thumbturn. Go with the mortise lock when the door itself needs to be secured by key from inside; go with a deadbolt when the door already has working latching hardware.
11) Will the Schlage L9071 match the levers and finish on the rest of our building?
The L9071 uses the 03 lever, same lever, rose and finish both sides of the door, in twelve finishes running from 605 bright brass and 606 satin brass through 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. Trim is A or B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon or N wrought escutcheon. Schlage L Series levers also suite with Von Duprin exit devices and the related LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so a building running those keeps one lever look across locks and exit hardware.
12) Does the Schlage L9071 meet ADA and Buy American requirements for a school or government job?
Both. Schlage states the L Series meets ADA requirements and complies with the Buy American Act, and all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. The 03 lever is a lever design, which is what ADA operable-hardware language is after in the first place. Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings are also held on the line.
13) Can I key several Schlage L9071 classroom locks alike so one key runs the wing?
Yes, keyed alike is an ordering option alongside standard keyed different, and there's a free text field for special cylinder and keying requirements if you're feeding an existing master system. Standard is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in C keyway. If you need a high security cylinder on the same locks, Schlage lists a UL437 listed option by specifying a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder.
14) Is the Schlage L9071 heavy duty enough for a high traffic corridor, and what's the lock case made of?
Heavy duty, commercial rated, with the case in cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. Schlage adds a security blocking hub that stops picking by pulling the levers, and the line is listed to ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 for forced entry. For a classroom door cycled all day by students, that's the construction you want rather than a Grade 2 residential-adjacent lock.
15) Does the Schlage L9071 need power or wiring run to the door?
No power required. The L9071 is a mechanical lock, keyed from the outside with the indicator driven off the lock itself, so there's nothing to wire and nothing that fails in an outage. Schlage does offer electrified L Series functions that auto detect 12V/24V DC with RX, DPS and latchbolt monitoring if the opening later needs access control, but that's a different lock, not an option on this one.
