1) Will the Schlage L9071 classroom security lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
That is exactly the thickness the L9071 is built for. The lock is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard commercial door and the standard mortise backset. If your doors run thicker, the rose and escutcheon choice is what changes: the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 through 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 through 2-1/4 inch, so a thicker-door application has to be specified as an option rather than taken as standard.
2) What does the indicator on the Schlage L9071 actually show, and can a teacher tell the door is locked without opening it?
The L9071 carries an interior indicator reading Locked/Unlocked, so someone standing inside the classroom can confirm the outside lever is secured without opening the door or stepping into the corridor. Schlage's indicator on the L Series is the 180 degree visibility type, readable down the length of the room rather than only head-on. That is the whole point of the classroom security function: the door is locked from inside, and the state is verifiable at a glance during a lockdown.
3) Is the Schlage L9071 a deadbolt lock, and does it still let students out during a lockdown?

Stand outside the door, on the corridor side: if the hinges are on your right it is a right hand or right hand reverse, on the left a left hand or left hand reverse, with reverse meaning the door pulls toward you. If your frame is prepped for that square corner strike and the pocket matches the case, it is a direct swap. Rounded-corner frame preps and different lip lengths need a different strike ordered.
8) My doors are bored for a cylindrical lock. Can I still get indicator hardware without cutting a mortise pocket?
Not with the L9071 - it is a mortise lock and needs a mortise pocket, a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1-1/4 by 8 inch armor front cut into the door edge. Retrofitting a bored door to mortise is real carpentry and on a fire door it can void the label.
