1) Does the Schlage L9071 classroom security lock let a teacher lock the door from inside the room?
Yes. The L9071 is Schlage's classroom security function, keyed on both sides so the outside lever can be locked or unlocked with a key from inside the classroom without anyone stepping into the corridor. The inside lever is always free for egress. It is a non-deadbolt function, so the only bolt is the latchbolt with an auxiliary deadlocking latch. The interior side carries the 180 degree visibility indicator reading Locked/Unlocked so staff can confirm status at a glance.
2) What door thickness and backset does the Schlage L9071 mortise lock require?
Standard prep is a 2-3/4 inch backset in a 1-3/4 inch door. The mortise pocket has to take a case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, and the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches. If your doors are thicker or thinner than 1-3/4 inch, the L escutcheon trim covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch, so trim selection is what follows the door.
3) Is the Schlage L9071 handed, and do I need to specify left or right when I order?
Yes, it's a handed lock. You need the hand of the door before ordering. Stand outside the opening: if the hinges are on your left it's a left hand (or left hand reverse if it swings toward you), and the mirror for right hand. Get this wrong on a mortise lock and the lever and latch orientation will be backwards.
4) Will the L9071 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The lock ships with the 10-072 strike, a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. 8) We just need to show locked or unlocked on a restroom door, not classroom security. What is a simpler option?
The Schlage L9071 is a keyed single-cylinder classroom security mortise lock, which is more lock than a restroom usually needs. For a simple occupied indication, the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock with a vacant/occupied indicator on the outside, and the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors. 9) Should I use an indicator mortise lock like the L9071 or just add an indicator deadbolt to the door?
