Schlage L9071P 06B 626 OS-OCC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9071 classroom security lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
That's exactly what the L9071 is built for. The mortise case is sized for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard commercial mortise prep. The case itself measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, so the door has to be prepped for a full mortise pocket, not a cylindrical bore. If your doors run thicker or thinner, the rose and escutcheon choice changes: the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch.
2) How does the Schlage L9071 classroom security function actually work during a lockdown?
The L9071 is a classroom security function, which means the teacher locks the door from inside the room with a key instead of stepping into the hallway. It's a single cylinder keyed lock, and the outside indicator reads Vacant or Occupied so anyone in the corridor, or a sweeping officer, can read the door status without trying the lever. Inside lever is always free for egress. No deadbolt on this one, the latchbolt does the work.
3) Do I have to specify a hand when ordering the Schlage L9071 mortise lock?
Yes, the L9071 is a handed lock, so you need the door's hand on the order. Stand outside the opening, note which side the hinges are on and which way the door swings, and give that with the order. Getting it wrong on a mortise lock is not a field fix like it is on some cylindrical locks.
4) Can I key the Schlage L9071 into our existing school master key system?
Six cylinder options cover most systems: P is a conventional 6-pin in the C keyway, R is Schlage FSIC with a core in S123 keyway, T is FSIC with a construction core, J is FSIC less core, B is SFIC less prep core, and L is less conventional cylinder if you're supplying your own. If your facility already runs Schlage small format or full size interchangeable cores, order the less-core option and stack your own cores. Note the grade trade: with the standard conventional cylinder the lock is A156.13 Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, with FSIC cores it's Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with SFIC it's Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security.
5) Is the Schlage L9071 rated for a fire door?
The L9000 Series latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, with the exception of the L9076 and L9077 functions, and the L9071 is not one of those exceptions. UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you verify it in the field. The lock also meets ADA requirements and complies with the California Referenced Standards Code where the lever return to door is 1/2 inch or less.
6) Should I use an indicator mortise lock or just add an indicator deadbolt to the door I already have?
Two different jobs. The L9071 replaces the whole lock, needs a full mortise pocket in the door, and gives you a keyed classroom function plus the outside Vacant/Occupied indicator in one Grade 1 case. If the opening already has an acceptable lock and you only need occupancy status plus a secondary bolt, a separate indicator deadbolt is far less door work: the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a thumbturn indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn. Choose the mortise lock when you're replacing the lock anyway or when the spec calls Grade 1.
7) I need an indicator lock for a restroom, not a classroom. Is the L9071 the right one?
No. The L9071 is a keyed classroom security function, meaning it locks from inside with a key, which is not what you want on a restroom where an occupant needs to thumbturn the door shut. For a restroom look at a privacy or public restroom indicator instead: the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty privacy/bed/bath visual status lever lock for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors and is fire rated, the Accentra AUYPL02 is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with visual status indicator, and the Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with occupancy indicator and single cylinder deadbolt.
8) My doors are bored for a cylindrical lock, not mortised. Can I still get an indicator lock?
Not with the L9071. It's a mortise lock and needs a mortise pocket cut in the door edge, sized for a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case. A cylindrical prep won't take it. For a bored door, indicator options include the Accentra AUYPL02, a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with visual status indicator, the Accentra D292, a Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Arrow E50, a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator outside, also 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch.
9) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage L9071 indicator lock if the opening needs a Grade 1 lever lock rather than a mortise lock?
The Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is the closest lever-operated indicator alternative at the same grade. Both are Grade 1. The difference is function and mounting: the L9071 is a mortise classroom security lock with a keyed single cylinder on a 2-3/4 inch backset, while the CLX3320 NVSL is a privacy/bed/bath visual status lever lock in the CLX3300 series that fits doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches thick and carries a fire rating. Choose the L9071 when the opening needs key control and classroom security; choose the CLX3320 NVSL when the room only needs privacy with a status window.
10) What is a simpler indicator option than a Schlage L9071 for a restroom door that does not need key control?
For a restroom that only needs an occupancy display and a thumbturn, the Hager 3216 is the simpler route: a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw, fire rated, for a 1-3/4 inch door. The Arrow E50 covers the same idea as a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator outside, on doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches. Both are deadbolts, not lock bodies, so the door still needs its own latching hardware, where the L9071 is a mortise lock with a keyed single cylinder that handles latching and key control in one case.
11) Is a thumbturn indicator deadbolt like the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 or Falcon D271 a substitute for a Schlage L9071 classroom security lock?
No. Those are indicator deadbolts, not classroom locks. The Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a thumbturn by indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn, and the Falcon D271 is a medium duty one-sided deadbolt with an occupancy indicator and inside thumbturn in the D200 series. Both are locked from inside the room by hand. The L9071 is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lock whose classroom security function is operated by a keyed single cylinder on a conventional 6-pin C keyway, which is what lets the lock be controlled with a key rather than only from inside. If the specification calls for key control, an indicator deadbolt does not meet it.
12) The door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches. Which indicator lock fits?
The Schlage L9071 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door, though its L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. Among the peers, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is the one that reaches past 1-3/4 inches, fitting doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches, as a Grade 1 privacy lever lock with visual status. The Accentra D292 and Arrow E50 stop at 1-3/4 inches, and the Hager 3216 is a 1-3/4 inch door bolt.
13) Does a strike come with the Schlage L9071 or do I order one separately?
A strike is included. It's the 10-072, a 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If you're replacing an existing mortise lock and the frame already has a square corner ANSI strike cutout of those dimensions, the prep should carry over. Radius corner frames need a different strike, so check the corners on your frame before you pull the old lock.
14) What finishes does the Schlage L9071 come in, and will it match the other hardware in the building?
Twelve finishes on the L9071: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, and 643E aged bronze. For a school or campus standardizing across openings, 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the two commercial defaults. The lock ships with the same lever, rose and finish on both sides of the door with a coordinating latch and strike, and all L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices, so a corridor running exit devices and a classroom running this lock can carry one lever design.
15) What has to be specified when ordering a Schlage L9071 so the right lock ships?
Five things decide the part: the cylinder option (P conventional 6-pin C keyway, R FSIC with S123 core, T FSIC with construction core, J FSIC less core, B SFIC less prep core, or L less conventional cylinder), the finish, the rose or escutcheon (A or B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon, N wrought escutcheon), the door hand, and the keying, either keyed different, keyed alike across a group of locks, or none if you're going less cylinder. Lever design is fixed at the 06 lever on this one.
16) Is the Schlage L9071 heavy duty enough for a high traffic school corridor?
Grade 1 heavy duty, tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 for both Grade 1 security and Grade 1 operational, which is the top commercial rating for mortise locks and what most school and institutional specs call for. The lock case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. A security blocking hub prevents lock picking by removing the levers.
17) Does the Schlage L9071 need power or wiring run to the door?
No wiring. The L9071 is fully mechanical, so it's a straight door and frame install with no power transfer hinge, no raceway, and no panel tie-in. Schlage does build electrified functions in the L Series that auto detect 12V or 24V DC and offer RX, DPS, latchbolt and deadbolt monitoring, but those are separate functions from this one.
18) Can I order a batch of Schlage L9071 locks all on the same key for a floor of classrooms?
Yes. Keyed alike is an ordering option, so a run of L9071 locks can share one key, which is what you want when one staff key needs to work a whole wing. Keyed different is the standard if each room gets its own key. If you run interchangeable cores in house, order a less-core cylinder option and pin them into your existing system instead.
19) What indicator lock should be used for a single-occupancy public restroom instead of a Schlage L9071?
The Falcon H2171 is built for that opening: a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with an occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt, in the storeroom/public restroom function of the H2 series. It combines the latch and deadbolt so one motion from inside secures and displays occupancy. The L9071 is a Grade 1 mortise lock in the classroom security function with a keyed single cylinder, which is written for a classroom door rather than a restroom.
20) Can an Emtek thumbturn privacy bolt be used in place of a Schlage L9071 on a commercial door?
They serve different buildings. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square, and 8683 Disk are thumbturn privacy bolts with double rosettes and an indicator, and each is meant to be used with a brass passage set, so the bolt handles privacy and a separate passage set handles the door. The L9071 is a commercial heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lock built from CRS with zinc dichromate plating, with the lever and lock in one keyed case. Use the Emtek bolts where a decorative residential-style passage set is already going on the door; use the L9071 where a commercial keyed classroom opening is being specified.
21) Does the Schlage L9071 meet Buy American requirements for a government or public school project?
The L Series meets the Buy American Act. It also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings, which matters if you're specifying into a Florida project, and it's certified under ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 with UL listing.
22) What is the lighter-duty indicator option compared with the Cal-Royal IND90 and the Schlage L9071?
The Cal-Royal IND84 is the lighter-duty indicator deadbolt, rated Grade 3 with a thumbturn by indicator function. The Cal-Royal IND90 series sits above it at Grade 1 with an ADA thumbturn, and the L9071 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lock. For a low-traffic interior door where the only requirement is showing occupancy, the IND84 answers it; for a door taking classroom or institutional traffic with key control, the L9071 is the heavier-duty answer.
