Schlage L9056P 03B 626 IS-LOC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9056 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a standard 2-3/4 inch backset mortise pocket?
Yes. The L9056 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard commercial mortise prep. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches and the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches, so it drops into an existing L Series pocket. Note the escutcheon choice changes the door thickness range: the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors.
2) How does the entrance/office function on the Schlage L9056 actually work day to day?
The latchbolt retracts by lever from either side until somebody locks the outside lever, either with the key outside or the inside thumbturn. Once locked, the outside lever is dead and entry is by key only, while the inside lever always retracts the latch for immediate egress. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. Unlocking is done by the thumbturn or key, and the inside indicator reads Locked or Unlocked so staff can see the state without testing the lever.
3) Is the Schlage L9056 handed, and do I need to specify hand when I order?
Yes, it is a handed lock. The indicator has to read correctly from the inside, so the hand of the door has to be right on the order. Check the swing and which side the pull face is on before you commit, and match it to the existing opening if you are replacing a lock.
4) Can I key the Schlage L9056 into an existing small format or full size interchangeable core system?
Yes. Four cylinder options are offered: P conventional 6-pin in the C keyway, J for Schlage FSIC less core, B for SFIC less prep core, and L less conventional cylinder. If you run SFIC across a facility, order the B option and drop your own cores in. Be aware of the security grade tradeoff: the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security with the standard cylinder, Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security with FSIC cores, and Grade 1 operational with Grade 3 security with SFIC cores.
5) Does the Schlage L9056 have a deadbolt, and is that a problem for a fire rated office door?
No deadbolt. The L9056 is a non-deadbolt entrance/office function that secures the opening by locking the outside lever over a deadlocked latchbolt. That is exactly what you want on a fire rated door where a separate deadbolt would defeat latching. L9000 locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors (the L9076 and L9077 are the exceptions), and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors 4 x 10 feet and pairs 8 x 10 feet, with the letter F and UL symbol stamped on the latch front.
6) Does the L9056 meet ADA and Grade 1 for a government or healthcare facility spec?
It is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, and meets ADA requirements. It also meets the Buy American Act, carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings, and is ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 UL listed. On the California Referenced Standards Code, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply.
7) What do I have to specify when ordering the Schlage L9056 besides finish?
Four things beyond finish. Cylinder: P conventional 6-pin C keyway, J Schlage FSIC less core, B SFIC less prep core, or L less conventional cylinder. Rose or escutcheon: A or B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon, or N wrought escutcheon. Hand of the door, since the lock is handed. And keying: keyed different is standard, keyed alike is available for multiple locks on one key, or select none if you are taking a less cylinder option. There is also a free text field for special cylinder and keying requirements if you need it pinned to an existing system.
8) What is the closest Grade 1 indicator lock to the Schlage L9056 if the door is prepped for a cylindrical lock instead of a mortise case?
The Schlage L9056 is a mortise lock with a 4-7/16" x 6-1/16" x 1" case, so it needs a mortise pocket in the door edge. For a cylindrical prep, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 visual status lever lock for doors 1-3/4" to 2" thick and is fire rated, and the Accentra AUYPL02 in the YPL Series is a Grade 1 cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator. Both of those are privacy/bed/bath function rather than the keyed entrance/office function of the L9056, so they suit a restroom or similar opening rather than an office door that has to lock with a key.
9) Can I use an indicator deadbolt instead of the Schlage L9056 to show locked status on an office door?
They solve different problems. The Schlage L9056 is a keyed entrance/office mortise lock whose latchbolt is retracted by lever from either side unless the outside lever is locked by key or thumbturn, with the inside lever always free for egress, and the indicator reads Locked/Unlocked. An indicator deadbolt such as the Hager 3216 is a thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1" throw for 1-3/4" doors and is fire rated, and the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a Grade 1 indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn. A deadbolt adds a separate bolt above an existing latch and does not provide the keyed lever control or the single-motion egress of the L9056.
10) What indicator lock should I use for a single-occupancy public restroom instead of the Schlage L9056?
The Schlage L9056 is an entrance/office function with a Locked/Unlocked indicator, which suits an office or suite door rather than a restroom. For a public restroom, the Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 interconnected lock with an occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt in a public restroom function, and the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator on the outside and no key cylinder, for doors 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" thick. The Falcon D271 is a Grade 2 medium duty one-sided deadbolt with an occupancy indicator and an inside thumbturn.
11) What strike comes with the Schlage L9056, and will it work in my existing frame prep?
It ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, 1-3/16 inch lip length, with a box. That is the standard ANSI square corner frame prep, so it goes straight into a frame already cut for an L Series mortise lock. If your frame has radius corner prep or you need a longer lip to clear frame stop or wall condition, specify a different strike on the order.
12) Can I match the L9056 trim to the Von Duprin exit devices already in my building?
Yes. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices, and with related L Series products including LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT. So a corridor running exit devices at the stair doors and mortise locks at the offices can carry one lever design throughout. Twelve finishes are offered, from 605 bright brass and 626 satin chrome through 622 matte black, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze, and the trim on the L9056 is the Omega lever.
13) Should I use a mortise indicator lock like the L9056 or a separate indicator deadbolt on my restroom or conference room door?
Different jobs. The L9056 is a keyed entrance/office mortise lock with the indicator built into the same case as the latch, heavy duty, Grade 1, on a 1-3/4 inch commercial door. If all you need is occupancy status above an existing passage set, a standalone indicator deadbolt is simpler: the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock reading Vacant/Occupied outside for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Neither of those gives you keyed office control.
14) Is the Schlage L9056 an electrified lock, and can I tie it to an access control system?
No, the L9056 is a mechanical lock with no electrified option on this configuration. If you need access control at the opening, go to the electrified L Series functions, which auto detect 12V or 24V DC, are customer-selectable EL or EU, and offer RX, DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor. Those are UL19X listed for single-point locking applications.
15) Can I get a higher security cylinder in the Schlage L9056 for a records room or IT closet?
Yes. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is an option on L Series locks, specified as a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder. Order the L less conventional cylinder option and fit the Primus, or call it out in the special cylinder and keying field. The standard cylinder otherwise is a conventional 6-pin in the C keyway.
16) Is there a lighter duty indicator option than the Schlage L9056 for a low traffic interior door?
The Schlage L9056 is a heavy duty Grade 1 commercial mortise lock. Where the opening does not call for that, the Accentra D292 is a Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator function for doors 1-3/8" to 1-3/4", and the Cal-Royal IND84 is a Grade 3 indicator deadbolt with a thumbturn by indicator function. Both are deadbolts with a status indicator only and do not include the keyed lever trim or the mortise case of the L9056, so the door still needs a latch or passage set of its own.
17) Can I add an Emtek indicator privacy bolt to a door instead of buying the Schlage L9056?
Only where the opening is residential-style privacy rather than keyed commercial. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square and 8683 Disk are thumbturn privacy bolts with double rosettes and an indicator, and they are meant to be used alongside a separate brass passage set. The Schlage L9056 is a commercial Grade 1 mortise lock with a single cylinder keyed entrance/office function and a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, so it carries the latching, the keying and the indicator in one case. The Emtek bolts add no key control.
18) For a fire rated opening, how does the Schlage L9056 compare to other indicator hardware?
The Schlage L9056 latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4' x 10' and pairs to 8' x 10', with the letter F and UL symbol on the latch front. Among the alternatives, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL and the Hager 3216 are both listed as fire rated. Confirm the rating required by the opening against the door and frame label before substituting any of them.
