Schlage L9056P 06B 626 IS-LOC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9056 mortise lock fit my door, and what prep does it need?
The L9056 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The mortise pocket has to take a case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, and the frame gets the 10-072 strike at 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, box type, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. It is a handed lock, so you need to know the hand of the opening before you order.
2) How does the L9056 Entrance/Office function actually work day to day?
Either lever retracts the latchbolt until the outside lever is locked, and it can be locked with the key outside or the inside thumbturn. Once locked, the outside opens only with the key; the inside lever still retracts the latch, so egress is never blocked. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. The automatic unlocking part means a key or thumbturn throw restores normal passage. There is no deadbolt in this function.
3) Is the L9056 rated for a fire door?
The L9000 series latch is UL listed for a 3-hour fire door, with the exception of the L9076 and L9077 functions, so the L9056 carries that listing. UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet, and the letter F with the UL symbol is stamped on the latch front. It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012, Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security.
4) Does the security grade change if I use interchangeable cores in this lock?
Yes, and it matters if you are writing to a Grade 1 spec. With a conventional cylinder the lock holds Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security. With Schlage FSIC full size interchangeable cores it stays Grade 1 operational but drops to Grade 2 security. With SFIC small format cores it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security. Cylinder choices run from conventional 6-pin C keyway to FSIC with core in S123 keyway, FSIC with construction core, FSIC less core, SFIC less prep, 7-pin SFIC prep with construction core, and less conventional cylinder.
5) What is the closest Grade 1 indicator lock if the door is prepped for a cylindrical lock instead of a mortise pocket?
The Schlage L9056 is a mortise lock with a 4-7/16" x 6-1/16" x 1" case, so it needs a mortise pocket in the door edge. For a cylindrical prep, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 lever lock with a visual status indicator in the CLX3300 Series, and the Accentra AUYPL02 in the YPL Series is a Grade 1 cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator. Both of those are privacy/bed/bath function rather than the L9056 entrance/office keyed function, so confirm the function matches the opening before substituting.
6) I only need an occupancy indicator on a restroom door, not a keyed entrance lock - what should I use instead of the Schlage L9056?
The L9056 is a keyed single-cylinder entrance/office lock, which is more lock than a restroom door usually needs. For indication alone, the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn x indicator deadbolt with a 1" throw for 1-3/4" doors, the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a thumbturn x indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn, and the Accentra D292 is a Grade 2 thumbturn x indicator cylindrical deadbolt for 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" doors. Those are deadbolts only, so they pair with a separate passage latch rather than replacing a latching lockset.
7) What does the indicator on this Schlage mortise lock show, and which side is it on?
It reads Locked/Unlocked and sits on the interior side, so someone inside a private office or a staff room can see the status of the outside lever without testing the handle. Schlage's L Series indicator is the 180 degree visibility type, readable from an angle rather than only head-on.
8) Which rose or escutcheon can I use on a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches?
Trim choice is tied to door thickness. The L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. The A and B wrought roses are the standard round trim. Note the lock itself is specified at 1-3/4 inch door thickness, so anything outside that has to be ordered as a thickness option.
9) Can I key these alike across a building so one key runs all the offices?
Yes. Keying is selected at order: keyed different is standard, keyed alike is available for multiple locks, or you can order with no cylinder if you are supplying or pinning your own. There is also a free text field for special cylinder and keying requirements, which is where a bitting list or an existing master key system gets called out. The standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the C keyway.
10) Will the levers on this lock match my Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage trim?
They will. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a building can carry one lever design across mortise locks and exit device trim. This one is the 06 Omega lever, and it is the same lever, rose and finish on both faces of the door with matching latch and strike.
11) Is an indicator deadbolt a better choice than this indicator mortise lock for a restroom or a conference room?
Different jobs. The L9056 is a keyed Entrance/Office mortise latch, so the indicator reports whether the outside lever is locked out, which suits offices and staff rooms that lock behind you. For a single occupancy restroom where you just want vacant/occupied, a separate indicator deadbolt is simpler: the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock with a Vacant/Occupied indicator outside. If you want indicator in a lever privacy lock instead, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is Grade 1 privacy for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
12) Is this a Buy American compliant lock for a government job?
The Schlage L Series meets the Buy American Act, and the line also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings. Levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code, and the trim meets ADA requirements.
13) Do I need power or wiring for this indicator lock?
No. The L9056 is a purely mechanical mortise lock, no wiring, no transformer, no door loop. The indicator and the automatic unlocking are mechanical. If you need access control at the opening, the L Series does offer electrified functions that auto detect 12V or 24V DC with selectable fail safe or fail secure and options like RX, DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor, but that is a different lock number.
14) Is a Cal-Royal IND84 indicator deadbolt an equivalent substitute for the Schlage L9056?
No. The Cal-Royal IND84 is a Grade 3 thumbturn x indicator deadbolt, while the Schlage L9056 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lockset with a keyed single cylinder and an interior locked/unlocked indicator. The IND84 provides indication and bolt throw only and carries a lower ANSI grade, so on a commercial opening specified Grade 1 it will not meet the spec.
15) What indicator option should I look at for a public restroom that still needs to be keyed from the outside?
The Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 interconnected public restroom lock with an occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt, in the H2 Series. It covers a keyed restroom opening in a cylindrical/interconnected prep. The Schlage L9056 handles the same keyed-outside idea in a mortise prep at Grade 1 with entrance/office function, where the inside lever is always free for egress.
16) I need a non-keyed indicator lock for an exit or storage door - what is different from the Schlage L9056?
The Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock with a vacant/occupied indicator on the outside, for 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" doors, and the Falcon D271 is a Grade 2 medium duty one-sided deadbolt with an occupancy indicator. Both skip the cylinder entirely. The Schlage L9056 is keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard and reads locked/unlocked on the interior side, so choose based on whether the opening needs key control.
17) What finishes does the L9056 come in if I need to match existing hardware?
Twelve finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, and 643E aged bronze. On a mixed building, 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the two that usually match existing commercial openings.
18) Is this lock heavy enough for a high traffic commercial opening?
It is a heavy duty commercial mortise lock, not a residential or light commercial part. The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, the armor front measures 1-1/4 by 8 inches, and a security blocking hub stops picking by pulling the levers off. That is the build for school, healthcare and office corridors rather than a Grade 2 tubular.
