Schlage L9056P 06B 626 OS-OCC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage L9056?
Yes, the L9056 is a handed lock, so the order has to state left or right hand and whether it is a reverse bevel. Get it wrong and the lever and the latch face the wrong way for the opening. Stand outside the door, on the side with the Vacant/Occupied indicator, and note which side the hinges are on before you order.
2) How does the Schlage L9056 entrance/office function actually work day to day?
The outside lever is locked or unlocked by key from outside or by the inside thumbturn, and it stays in whichever state you left it. With the outside locked, entry is by key; the inside lever always retracts the latch, so egress is never blocked. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door is closed. The outside indicator reads Vacant or Occupied so staff can see the room's state without trying the lever. There is no deadbolt in this function.
3) What cylinder options come on the Schlage L9056, and can I order it less cylinder to use my own cores?
Four cylinder choices: P is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, L is less conventional cylinder, J is Schlage FSIC prepped less core, and B is SFIC prepped less core. Locksmiths standardizing a building on their own core system take J or B and supply the cores. One security note that matters for spec work: the lock is Grade 1 operational and security with the standard cylinder, but drops to Grade 2 security with FSIC cores and Grade 3 security with SFIC cores.
4) Can I put a Schlage L9056 on a fire rated door?
Yes. The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 x 10 feet and pairs up to 8 x 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front is how you confirm a given lock is the listed version. The exceptions to the 3-hour listing are the L9076 and L9077, not the L9056.
5) Is the Schlage L9056 ANSI Grade 1, and does it meet ADA?
Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012, Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, and it meets ADA requirements. It also meets the Buy American Act, which matters on federal and many state jobs, and it carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings. For California work, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code.
6) I need an indicator lock for a restroom, not an office. Is the L9056 the right function?
Probably not. The L9056 is an entrance/office function, keyed outside with a thumbturn inside, which suits offices, suites and workrooms where staff control access. A single-occupancy restroom usually wants a privacy or public restroom function instead. From the Grade 1 side, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is an extra heavy duty privacy/bed/bath visual status lever lock for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, and the Accentra AUYPL02 is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with visual status indicator. If the restroom needs to lock down like a storeroom, the Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with occupancy indicator and single cylinder deadbolt.
7) Can I use an indicator deadbolt like the Hager 3216 or Arrow E50 instead of a Schlage L9056?
Only if the door already has a separate latching device. The Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for a 1-3/4 inch door, and the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock with a vacant/occupied indicator outside for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Both are bolts only, thrown by thumbturn from the inside, with no lever and no latch. The Schlage L9056 is a complete mortise lockset with a 06 lever, a 2-3/4 inch backset, an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes, and a keyed cylinder outside. Pair a deadbolt with an existing passage set; use the L9056 when one device has to do both the latching and the locking.
8) What is the difference between the Schlage L9056 and the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL indicator lock?
They solve two different openings. The Schlage L9056 is a mortise lock with an Entrance/Office function and a single keyed cylinder, so the outside lever is locked by key or thumbturn and released by key from outside or the inside lever, with the inside lever always free for egress. The Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a cylindrical visual status lever lock with a Privacy/Bed/Bath function, for a door that is secured from the inside only and has no outside key control. Choose the L9056 where an office or suite door needs keyed control from the corridor, and the CLX3320 NVSL where the occupant inside is the only person who locks the door.
9) For a public restroom that needs a key on the outside and an occupancy indicator, is the Falcon H2171 an alternative to the Schlage L9056?
It is the closest keyed alternative in function. The Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with an occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt, so it combines keyed outside control with the vacant/occupied read. The Schlage L9056 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lock in the Entrance/Office function, single cylinder keyed, with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch mortise case and a 2-3/4 inch backset. The H2171 is an interconnected lock for a bored door prep; the L9056 requires a mortise pocket in the door edge, so the existing door prep usually decides between them.
10) Can I get all the L9056 locks in my building keyed alike?
Yes. Keying is a required selection: KD keyed different is standard, KA keyed alike is there for running multiple locks on one key, and there is a none option when you are ordering less cylinder and supplying your own. There is also a free-text field for special cylinder or keying requirements, which is where a keyway other than C, a master key system, or a construction keying request goes.
11) Will the Schlage L9056 lever match the other doors and exit devices in my building?
The 06 lever comes on this lock, and all L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT. So a building running Von Duprin devices on the stair and exterior doors can carry the same lever design onto the office doors. Trim comes as A or B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon, or N wrought escutcheon, in twelve finishes from bright brass and satin chrome through matte black, oil rubbed bronze and satin stainless. Both sides of the door get the same lever, rose and finish.
12) Does the Schlage L9056 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt. The L9056 is a non-deadbolt function: security comes from the latchbolt, which an auxiliary latch deadlocks once the door closes, and from locking the outside lever by key or thumbturn. If the opening needs a true deadbolt, that is a different L Series function, not this one. The anti-saw pin Schlage puts in the bolt applies to the deadbolt functions, not here.
13) Is the Schlage L9056 an electrified lock, and can it be tied into an access control system?
The L9056 is a mechanical lock, not electronic. If the opening needs card access or remote release, you want one of the electrified L9000 functions instead, which auto detect 12V/24V DC, allow customer-selectable EL or EU, and offer RX, DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor. Those electrified functions are UL19X listed for single-point locking.
14) I need an indicator lock for a 2 inch thick door - what are the options besides the Schlage L9056 mortise lock?
The Schlage L9056 lists a 1-3/4 inch door thickness with the standard trim, and its L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors while the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch. If a cylindrical prep is wanted instead, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 privacy visual status lever lock rated for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. Note the CLX3320 NVSL is a privacy function with no outside key, so it fits a different security need than the keyed Entrance/Office L9056.
15) What is a lighter duty alternative to the Schlage L9056 for a low traffic occupancy door?
Where the traffic does not call for the L9056, which is a heavy duty Grade 1 commercial mortise lock, the indicator function can be handled by a lighter bolt. The Falcon D271 is a Grade 2 medium duty deadbolt with an occupancy indicator and a thumbturn inside. The Cal-Royal IND84 is a Grade 3 indicator deadbolt with a thumbturn by indicator function. The Accentra D292 is a Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. All three are deadbolts rather than levered locksets, so the door still needs its own latch, and none of them is keyed from the outside the way the L9056 is.
16) Will an Emtek indicator privacy bolt work in place of a Schlage L9056 on a commercial office door?
No. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square and 8683 Disk are thumbturn privacy bolts with double rosettes and an indicator, intended to be used alongside a brass passage set, and their function is Privacy/Bed/Bath. They add an occupancy read to a door that latches with a separate passage set and are not keyed. The Schlage L9056 is a commercial heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lockset, single cylinder keyed, with a 06 lever and a 10-072 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike. The Emtek bolts are the choice for a decorative interior door; the L9056 is the choice where the opening needs a keyed commercial lock.
17) Which indicator locks meet a Grade 1 requirement if the Schlage L9056 does not fit the opening?
Three products in the indicator group carry a Grade 1 rating alongside the Schlage L9056, which is Grade 1 and heavy duty. The Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty privacy visual status lever lock that is fire rated, and the Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a Grade 1 indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn. The AUYPL02 and CLX3320 are cylindrical locksets for a bored prep and the IND90-G2 is a deadbolt that needs a separate latch, so the Grade 1 line is available in three different door preps.
18) Do any indicator deadbolts offer an ADA compliant thumbturn as an alternative to the Schlage L9056?
The Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a Grade 1 indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn, so the occupant side operates without tight grasping or twisting of a small knob. The Schlage L9056 meets ADA requirements as part of the L Series, and all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. The two differ in what they are: the IND90-G2 is a deadbolt that needs the door to have its own latching device, while the L9056 is a complete keyed mortise lockset with a 06 lever.
19) Is there an indicator lock that works with interchangeable cores like the Schlage L9056?
The Schlage L9056 is ordered with a B SFIC less prep core, a J Schlage FSIC less core, an L less conventional cylinder, or a P conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, and its standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin C keyway. Among the indicator alternatives, the keyed choice is the Falcon H2171, a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with an occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt. The rest of the indicator group - including the Arrow E50, which is a non-keyed exit deadlock, and the Emtek 8683 thumbturn privacy bolt - operate by thumbturn only, so a facility standardizing on one core system will want the L9056 or the H2171 on those openings.
20) Is a Schlage L9056 heavy duty enough for a high-traffic commercial corridor?
It is a heavy duty commercial mortise lock, Grade 1 operational and security, with a cold rolled steel case finished in zinc dichromate plating. Schlage also builds a security blocking hub into the L Series that prevents picking the lock by pulling the levers off. For high-traffic openings where levers get abused, the Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim option is available on most functions.
21) I want a higher security cylinder in my indicator mortise lock. What do I order?
Specify a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder. That is the UL437 listed locking cylinder option on the L Series, and it gives you patented key control on top of the Grade 1 lock body. Order the lock less conventional cylinder if you are supplying the Primus separately.
