1) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage L9056?
Yes, the L9056 is a handed lock, so the order has to state left or right hand and whether it is a reverse bevel. Get it wrong and the lever and the latch face the wrong way for the opening. Stand outside the door, on the side with the Vacant/Occupied indicator, and note which side the hinges are on before you order.
2) How does the Schlage L9056 entrance/office function actually work day to day?
The outside lever is locked or unlocked by key from outside or by the inside thumbturn, and it stays in whichever state you left it. With the outside locked, entry is by key; the inside lever always retracts the latch, so egress is never blocked. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door is closed. The outside indicator reads Vacant or Occupied so staff can see the room's state without trying the lever. There is no deadbolt in this function.
3) What cylinder options come on the Schlage L9056, and can I order it less cylinder to use my own cores?
Four cylinder choices: P is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, L is less conventional cylinder, J is Schlage FSIC prepped less core, and B is SFIC prepped less core. Locksmiths standardizing a building on their own core system take J or B and supply the cores. One security note that matters for spec work: the lock is Grade 1 operational and security with the standard cylinder, but drops to Grade 2 security with FSIC cores and Grade 3 security with SFIC cores.
4) Can I put a Schlage L9056 on a fire rated door?
Yes. The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 x 10 feet and pairs up to 8 x 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front is how you confirm a given lock is the listed version. The exceptions to the 3-hour listing are the L9076 and L9077, not the L9056.
5) Is the Schlage L9056 ANSI Grade 1, and does it meet ADA?
Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012, Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, and it meets ADA requirements. It also meets the Buy American Act, which matters on federal and many state jobs, and it carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings. 6) I need an indicator lock for a restroom, not an office. Is the L9056 the right function?
Probably not. The L9056 is an entrance/office function, keyed outside with a thumbturn inside, which suits offices, suites and workrooms where staff control access. A single-occupancy restroom usually wants a privacy or public restroom function instead. From the Grade 1 side, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is an extra heavy duty privacy/bed/bath visual status lever lock for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, and the Accentra AUYPL02 is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with visual status indicator. If the restroom needs to lock down like a storeroom, the Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with occupancy indicator and single cylinder deadbolt.
7) Can I use an indicator deadbolt like the Hager 3216 or Arrow E50 instead of a Schlage L9056?
Only if the door already has a separate latching device. The Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn by occupancy indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for a 1-3/4 inch door, and the Arrow E50 is a Grade 2 non-keyed exit deadlock with a vacant/occupied indicator outside for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Both are bolts only, thrown by thumbturn from the inside, with no lever and no latch. The Schlage L9056 is a complete mortise lockset with a 06 lever, a 2-3/4 inch backset, an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes, and a keyed cylinder outside. Pair a deadbolt with an existing passage set; use the L9056 when one device has to do both the latching and the locking.
8) What is the difference between the Schlage L9056 and the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL indicator lock?
They solve two different openings. The Schlage L9056 is a mortise lock with an Entrance/Office function and a single keyed cylinder, so the outside lever is locked by key or thumbturn and released by key from outside or the inside lever, with the inside lever always free for egress. No deadbolt. The L9056 is a non-deadbolt function: security comes from the latchbolt, which an auxiliary latch deadlocks once the door closes, and from locking the outside lever by key or thumbturn. If the opening needs a true deadbolt, that is a different L Series function, not this one. The anti-saw pin Schlage puts in the bolt applies to the deadbolt functions, not here.
13) Is the Schlage L9056 an electrified lock, and can it be tied into an access control system?
The L9056 is a mechanical lock, not electronic. If the opening needs card access or remote release, you want one of the electrified L9000 functions instead, which auto detect 12V/24V DC, allow customer-selectable EL or EU, and offer RX, DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor.
