Schlage L9056P 06B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9056 fit my door, and is it handed?
It is built for 1-3/4 inch doors with a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the door needs a standard ANSI mortise pocket at that backset. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch and the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches. This one is handed, so you have to specify the hand of the opening when you order.
2) Will the L9056 latch into the strike prep I already have in the frame?
The lock ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner with a box and a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the standard ANSI mortise strike footprint, so if your frame is prepped for a square corner ANSI strike of that size you are a straight swap. Radius corner frames or a different lip length will need the strike changed out.
3) Does the L9056 hold a fire rating for a labeled opening?
The L9000 latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and the series is UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol on the latch front indicate the listing. It is also ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, and meets ADA requirements.
4) Which cylinder option should I pick if my building is on small format interchangeable core?
Seven cylinder choices are offered. For SFIC buildings, choose B for SFIC less prep core or H for 7-pin SFIC prep with a construction core. For Schlage full size IC, pick J (less core), R (with core, S123 keyway) or T (with construction core). P gives the conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, and L is less conventional cylinder if your locksmith is supplying it. Note the grading shift: with FSIC cores the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with SFIC cores it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security, versus Grade 1 security on the standard cylinder.
5) Can I get a batch of these keyed alike across a set of offices?
Yes. Keying is selected at order: KD keyed different is the standard, KA keyed alike groups multiple locks on one key, and None is used when you are ordering a less-cylinder configuration and supplying your own. There is also a free text field for special cylinder or keying requirements if you are matching an existing master system. The standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the C keyway.
6) Is the L9056 the right lock for a classroom, or do I need a different function?
No, not for a classroom. The L9056 is entrance/office with automatic unlocking, meant for an office or a suite door where staff lock the outside lever from inside by thumbturn. For classroom duty look at a classroom function lock like the Corbin Russwin ML2003 Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset or the Cal-Royal NM8070 Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset, both listed for 1-3/4 inch doors. If you need storeroom behavior (outside always locked, key only), the Cal-Royal NM8080 or Accentra 8805FL Grade 1 storeroom mortise locks cover that.
7) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage L9056 entrance/office mortise lock?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the nearest match: it is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lockset with entrance/office function and an auxiliary deadlatch, listed for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage L9056 is also Grade 1, heavy duty, entrance/office function on a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and its auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. The Schlage differs in the breadth of cylinder prep offered, including conventional 6-pin C keyway, Schlage FSIC with or without core, and SFIC preps.
8) Is a Baldwin 6301 mortise lock body a drop-in substitute for a Schlage L9056?
No. The Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment mortise lock body, offered knob by knob or lever by lever, uses a 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 inches and over. The Schlage L9056 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the cylinder and spindle centerlines fall at different points and the door prep will not line up. The Schlage also carries a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip.
9) Which rose or escutcheon works on a door that isn't 1-3/4 inch?
Four trim choices are offered: A and B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon covering 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors, and N wrought escutcheon covering 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. The lock itself is catalogued at 1-3/4 inch, so thicker doors mean specifying the door thickness option along with escutcheon trim rated for it.
10) What finishes can I get to match the rest of the building's hardware?
Twelve finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. Both sides of the door get the same lever, rose and finish with coordinating latch and strike, and the levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT product lines if you are standardizing a facility.
11) Does the L9056 have a deadbolt, and what if I need one?
No deadbolt. The L9056 is a non-deadbolt function, single cylinder keyed, relying on the latchbolt with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks it when the door closes. If the opening needs a true deadbolt, other L Series deadbolt functions include an anti-saw pin in the bolt, or look at a separate mortise deadbolt such as the Sargent 4874 double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset.
12) Is this lock durable enough for a high traffic commercial corridor?
It's a heavy duty commercial mortise lock, Grade 1 for both security and operational under ANSI/BHMA A156.13, with the lock case in cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. The security blocking hub prevents picking by pulling the levers off. It also meets the Buy American Act, which matters on government work.
13) Is the L9056 electrified or can it be tied into an access control system?
No, this one is purely mechanical, no electronics. If the opening needs access control, the L Series electrified functions auto detect 12V/24V DC with customer-selectable EL/EU and offer RX, DPS, latchbolt and deadbolt monitoring. Credential-based alternatives in the same mortise footprint include the Schlage Electronics LEMD Grade 1 ENGAGE wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader, or the BEST 45HW wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V/24V.
14) Can I get a higher security cylinder in the L9056?
Yes. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is an option on the L Series, specified as a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder. The lock also carries ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 and UL listing, and Miami-Dade NOA and Florida Building Commission listings if you are working a coastal jurisdiction.
15) Can a Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt be used in place of a Schlage L9056?
No, they do different jobs. The Sargent 4874 in the 4870 Series is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset and no lever operation, so it provides bolt-only security and requires separate trim or a latch for normal door use. The Schlage L9056 is a non-deadbolt entrance/office lock whose latchbolt is retracted by lever from either side unless the outside lever is locked, with the inside lever always free for immediate egress.
16) For a bathroom or bedroom door, what mortise lock is used instead of the entrance/office L9056?
Privacy function is the right choice there. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S in the 3800 Series is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches thick. The Schlage L9056 is keyed single cylinder entrance/office and is intended for offices and entrances rather than privacy openings.
17) What mortise lock replaces the L9056 if the door needs keypad or credential access instead of a key?
Electronic mortise locks in the same door hardware family include the Alarm Lock DL3500CR Trilogy, a Grade 1 electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes and classroom function for doors 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inches thick; the BEST 45HZ EZ Series electronic keypad mortise lock with key override; the Dormakaba E-Plex E5086, a Grade 1 pushbutton and card mortise lock; and the TownSteel FME-2000, a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage L9056 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock operated by key and thumbturn.
18) What is the difference between the Schlage L9056 and the Sargent 7925 for a dormitory corridor door?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty corridor/dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, so the door carries a projecting deadbolt. The Schlage L9056 is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-deadbolt entrance/office lock: security comes from the latchbolt plus an auxiliary latch that deadlocks it when the door closes, with the outside lever locked by key or inside thumbturn.
19) What should be specified instead of the L9056 on a behavioral health or ligature-resistant opening?
For anti-ligature trim, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset with passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All three are passage function; the Schlage L9056 is a keyed entrance/office lock with a standard Omega lever.
20) What mortise lock should be used on an unlocked corridor or closet door where the L9056 would be more lock than the opening needs?
Passage function covers it. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock in the MA Series with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S and 3810E are Grade 1 passage mortise locks with a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors, the 3810S with rose trim and the 3810E with escutcheon. The Schlage L9056 is keyed, so it belongs on doors that need to be secured rather than doors that simply need a latch.
21) Is the Schlage LE Series mortise lock an equivalent to the L9056?
They differ in grade and operation. The Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors with a 3 hour fire rating. The LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and Greenwich trim, right hand, also 3 hour fire rated. The L9056 is a Grade 1 mechanical lock with no electronics, keyed single cylinder with thumbturn locking.
22) Which mortise lock supports interchangeable core keying if standardizing a facility away from conventional cylinders?
The Schlage L9056 is ordered with a range of cylinder preps including SFIC less core, 7-pin SFIC prep with construction core, Schlage FSIC less core, FSIC with core in S123 keyway, and FSIC with construction core, alongside the conventional 6-pin C keyway. Among peers, the Cal-Royal NM8080 storeroom mortise lockset offers an interchangeable core option and the BEST 45H Series is a heavy duty mortise lock body in the BEST line.
23) Will an Emtek mortise entrance lockset work as a substitute for the Schlage L9056?
No. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are dummy function, meaning they are non-operating trim with no latch action. The Schlage L9056 is a functioning Grade 1 heavy duty commercial lock whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side unless the outside lever is locked by key or thumbturn.
24) What mortise lock handles a lockdown or intruder requirement that the L9056 does not?
The BEST 45HCA Series heavy duty mortise lockbody offers an intruder function, and the TownSteel FME-4000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage L9056 is an entrance/office lock: the outside lever is locked by key from outside or thumbturn from inside, and the inside lever always stays free for immediate egress.
25) Is a Marks USA 21AC or 22AC ornamental iron mortise lock an alternative to the Schlage L9056?
They suit different doors. The Marks USA 21AC and 22AC are entrance double cylinder ornamental iron mortise locks with a round knob, listed for 1 inch door thickness, which is narrow-stile ornamental iron work. The Schlage L9056 is a single cylinder keyed lever lock built for 1-3/4 inch commercial doors with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case.
26) Which lever comes on this L9056, and is it ADA compliant?
It comes with the Omega lever on both sides. Per the L Series listing, all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code, and the series meets ADA requirements. The locking lever bushing also does away with exposed screws on the inside lever.
