Schlage L9056P 07B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage L9056 Entrance/Office function actually do when someone locks it?
The outside lever is locked by key from outside or by the inside thumbturn, and it stays locked until it is unlocked again the same way. That is the difference from a storeroom lock, which relocks itself every time. With the outside locked, the latchbolt still retracts by key outside or by the inside lever, so egress is never blocked. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door is closed. It's a non-deadbolt function, so security comes from the deadlocked latch, not a separate bolt.
2) Is the L9056 handed, and do I need to know the door hand before ordering?
Yes, the L9056 is a handed lock, so you need the hand of the opening before you order. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your right and it swings away from you it's right hand, hinges left and swinging away is left hand; reverse-bevel openings that swing toward you are right or left hand reverse. Some competing mortise bodies are field reversible, like the BEST 45H public entrance body and the Falcon MA101 passage lock, but with this one you specify the hand.
3) Will the L9056 latch into the strike already in my frame, or do I need to change it?
The lock ships with a 10-072 strike measuring 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, box type, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame is prepped for the standard ANSI square-corner mortise strike, that is the same cutout. If your existing strike is radius-corner, the frame prep will not match a square corner face and you'll be filing or replacing the strike. The 1-3/16 inch lip is sized to standard frame stop projection, so check your lip length against the existing one when the frame is deeper.
4) Can I get the Schlage L9056 to work on my building's existing key system?
Seven cylinder options cover most keying situations. The standard build is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway. If your facility is on small format interchangeable core you can order B (SFIC less core, so you supply your own) or H (7-pin SFIC prep with a construction core). For Schlage full size IC there's J (less core), R (with core, S123 keyway) and T (with construction core). Option L comes less conventional cylinder if your locksmith is supplying one. Ordering less-core or less-cylinder is the usual move when a building is already keyed to a system.
5) Can I use the Schlage L9056 on a fire rated door?
Yes. The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, with the exception of the L9076 and L9077 functions, and the L9056 is not one of those. The UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how an inspector confirms the listing on an installed lock.
6) Is the Schlage L9056 Grade 1, and does the grade change if I use an interchangeable core?
Yes, and the answer depends on the cylinder. As built with a conventional cylinder, the L9000 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012, Series 1000, Grade 1 Operational and Grade 1 Security. Put a Schlage full size interchangeable core in it and it stays Grade 1 Operational but drops to Grade 2 Security; with a small format IC it's Grade 1 Operational, Grade 3 Security. If a spec on your drawing calls for Grade 1 security outright, that rules out ordering it with an IC prep.
7) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage L9056?
Four things beyond the function itself. Hand of the door, since the L9056 is handed. Cylinder option, one of the seven prep codes from conventional 6-pin C keyway through the SFIC and Schlage FSIC variations. Rose or escutcheon trim: A or B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon, or N wrought escutcheon, and the escutcheons carry their own door thickness ranges. And finish, from twelve including 605 bright brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 622 matte black, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. Lever design on this build is the 07 Omega.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage L9056 entrance/office mortise lock?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the nearest match on function and grade. It is a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, built for 1-3/4 inch doors. The L9056 is also a Grade 1 entrance/office mortise lock for 1-3/4 inch doors with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and its auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. Both put a keyed entrance/office function in a heavy duty mortise case, so an opening specified for one accepts the other function-for-function.
9) The opening needs to stay locked from outside at all times with no unlocking thumbturn - what mortise lock should be used instead of the L9056?
Use a storeroom function instead. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors with an interchangeable core option. On the L9056 the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key or by the inside thumbturn, so an occupant can leave it unlocked; a storeroom function has no thumbturn to do that. For utility rooms, electrical closets and stock rooms that must never be left unsecured, the storeroom function is the correct call.
10) Is a classroom function mortise lock a substitute for the L9056?
No - the two lock and unlock differently. The Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors; a classroom function is locked and unlocked by key from the outside. The L9056 adds an inside thumbturn that locks and unlocks the outside lever, which lets an occupant secure the door from inside without a key. If the specification calls for key-only control from the corridor, the classroom function is what belongs on the opening, not the L9056.
11) What mortise lock replaces an L9056 when the building wants keypad or credential access on the door?
Several electronic mortise locks cover the same doorway. The Schlage CO-100-MS-40-KP is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader, rated for 3 hour fire doors. The TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors. The L9056 is a mechanical lock with no electronics, keyed on a conventional 6-pin C keyway. Choose the electronic route when codes or credentials need to be issued and revoked without rekeying.
12) Will a Baldwin 6301 mortise lock body drop into a door prepped for a Schlage L9056?
No - the backsets differ. The Baldwin 6301 is an entry/apartment mortise lock body on a 2-1/2 inch backset, offered knob by knob or, as the 6301LS, lever by lever, for doors 1-3/4 inch and over. The L9056 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 4-7/16 inch by 6-1/16 inch by 1 inch case. A door mortised for one will not take the other without reworking the pocket and the trim bore, so confirm the existing backset before ordering either.
13) A behavioral health room needs a mortise lock - is the L9056 the right pick or is there a ligature resistant option?
Go with purpose-built anti-ligature trim. The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel with a passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. The L9056 is a keyed entrance/office lock with a conventional Omega lever, which is not a ligature resistant trim.
14) What mortise lock covers an opening that needs to be released from the access control panel, unlike the L9056?
An electrified mortise lock. The Command Access ML19092-M is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC in a storeroom function, and the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V or 24V. The L9056 is a mechanical lock with no electronics, so it cannot be released remotely. If the door is tied to a card reader, intercom or fire alarm release, the electrified body is what the sequence of operations requires.
15) Does the L9056 need to be ordered handed the way some competing mortise locks do not?
Yes. The L9056 is a handed lock, so the hand of the door has to be confirmed at the time of order. Several peers are field reversible instead: the BEST 45HCAC public entrance mortise lock body and the Falcon MA101 Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock both list field reversible operation, and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a no-handing deadbolt function mortise lock. On a retrofit where the hand is uncertain until the door is opened up, that difference is worth checking before the order goes in.
16) For a facility standardizing on interchangeable core, what mortise locks compete with the L9056?
The L9056 handles interchangeable core directly: cylinder options include B for SFIC less prep core, H for 7-pin SFIC prep with construction core, J for Schlage FSIC less core, R for FSIC with core in S123 keyway, T for FSIC with construction core, plus L for less conventional cylinder and P for the conventional 6-pin C keyway. Among comparable mortise locks, the Cal-Royal NM8080 heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom lockset offers an interchangeable core option, and the BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override. Match the core format already in the facility so one key system covers the whole door schedule.
17) Should I use an Entrance/Office mortise lock or a storeroom function on an office door?
Pick by who controls the lock. Entrance/Office, which is what the L9056 is, lets the occupant lock the outside lever with a thumbturn and leave it locked, which is what people want on a private office or a suite entry they lock at the end of the day. A storeroom function is always locked from outside and only a key gets you in, which is right for mechanical rooms, IT closets and stock rooms where nobody should be able to leave it unlocked. If storeroom is what the opening needs, the Cal-Royal NM8080 and the Accentra 8805FL are Grade 1 mortise storeroom locks. On a classroom door you'd want a classroom function instead, like the Corbin Russwin ML2003 or the Cal-Royal NM8070.
18) What is the closest alternative to a Schlage L9056 from another brand?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the nearest match in our line: a heavy duty Grade 1 Office/Entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, listed for 1-3/4 inch doors, same as the L9056. It's the straight functional swap when you don't need to stay inside the Schlage L family for keying or lever suiting. The reason people stay with the L9056 is usually the rest of the building: the levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, and the C keyway cylinder matches an existing Schlage system.
19) I need keypad or card access on an office door, not a key. Is the L9056 the wrong lock?
It is, if credentials are the requirement. The L9056 is a mechanical lock with no electronic option. For the same office style access electronically, the Schlage LE Series LEBMB-ADD is a mobile enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors, and the ENGAGE Series LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader. The Dormakaba E-Plex 5086 is a Grade 1 pushbutton and card entry/egress mortise lock if you'd rather not run a network.
20) Will the Schlage L9056 hold up on a high traffic commercial opening?
It's a heavy duty commercial mortise lock, not a residential or light commercial one. The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, and the L9000 exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 security and operational standards. A security blocking hub prevents picking the lock by pulling the levers off. That's the durability profile for building entries, tenant suites and corridor doors that cycle all day.
21) Does the Schlage L9056 meet ADA and does it qualify for a Buy American job?
Both. The L Series meets ADA requirements, and the lever design matters for California work: all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. It also meets the Buy American Act, which is what a government or public institution procurement office needs before it can put the part on a purchase order. Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings are held as well.
22) Can I get a higher security cylinder in a Schlage L9056?
Yes. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is an option on the L Series, specified as a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder. That's the route when the opening needs key control and drill or pick resistance beyond the standard conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder the lock normally ships with. Order the lock less cylinder (option L) if the Primus is being supplied and keyed by your locksmith.
23) Is the L9056 a deadbolt lock, and do I need a separate deadbolt on the door?
No deadbolt. The L9056 is a non-deadbolt function, so all the security is in the latchbolt, which is deadlocked by the auxiliary latch as soon as the door closes. On most commercial openings that is what the code allows, because a separate deadbolt means a second operation to exit. If the opening genuinely needs a bolt, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with the same 2-3/4 inch backset, and among Schlage L Series functions there are deadbolt versions with an anti-saw pin in the bolt.
24) Which mortise locks fit a 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch door where the L9056 will not?
The Alarm Lock Trilogy electronic mortise locks cover that range: the DL2700CR is a Grade 1 classroom function weatherproof electronic mortise lock for 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors, the DL3500CR is a Grade 1 classroom electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes across the same range, and the DL4500DB is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and a privacy keypad, also 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch. The L9056 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. Measure the leaf first - a nominal 1-3/4 inch door that has been faced or is running thin is the case where the Alarm Lock range matters.
25) What non-keyed mortise lock covers an office door that does not need a cylinder?
The Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock, non-keyed, with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors. The L9056 is a keyed single cylinder lock that ships with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, and it takes the same 2-3/4 inch backset. Where an interior office door needs the office latching behavior without being brought onto the key system, the 3850E does it with no cylinder to key or stock.
26) What mortise lock should go on the door instead of the L9056 if the room needs a bathroom or bedroom privacy function?
Use a privacy function. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with a deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. The L9056 is a non-deadbolt entrance/office function operated by a key on the outside; it is keyed into the building's system rather than left to the occupant. For restrooms, exam rooms and bedrooms, the privacy function is the right choice.
27) What is the simpler mortise lock for a door that only needs to latch, with no locking at all?
A passage function. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose trim on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors; the Hager 3810E is the same passage function with an escutcheon. The L9056 carries a keyed single cylinder and a thumbturn to lock the outside lever - hardware that a corridor, hall or closet door with nothing to secure does not need.
28) Can a Sargent 7925 be used where an L9056 is specified?
Only if the opening actually wants a deadbolt. The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty corridor/dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt in the 7900 Series. The L9056 is a non-deadbolt function: its security comes from a latchbolt that the auxiliary latch deadlocks when the door closes, with the outside lever locked by key or thumbturn. Dormitory and apartment corridor doors that need a throwable bolt take the 7925; a door prepped for a non-deadbolt case takes the L9056.
29) Does the BEST 45H public entrance mortise lock body do the same job as an L9056?
They are close in intent but not the same function, and one is sold differently. The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body with a public entrance function and field reversible operation; 45HCAC is the lock body, so trim is specified separately. The L9056 is a heavy duty entrance/office function supplied with matching lever, rose and coordinating latch and strike, in an Omega lever with wrought rose, wrought escutcheon or cast/forged escutcheon trim. On a public entrance door where the outside is expected to relock on its own schedule, verify the function letter against the drawing before swapping either way.
30) Is a Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt an alternative to the L9056?
No - it is a different device, not a substitute. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset in the 4870 Series; it throws a bolt and has no lever or latch, so a door fitted with only a 4874 still needs separate trim to open it. The L9056 is a non-deadbolt entrance/office lock whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side unless the outside is locked, with the inside lever always free for immediate egress. The two share a 2-3/4 inch backset but are ordered for different purposes; a deadbolt on an egress door also raises a second-operation concern.
31) Which Emtek mortise entrance locksets are not usable in place of an L9056?
The Emtek dummy locksets - the 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets - are all dummy function. A dummy has no latch and no lock; it is fixed trim for an inactive leaf or a pull. The L9056 is a working keyed entrance/office lock with a latchbolt and an auxiliary latch that deadlocks it when the door closes. The word entrance in the Emtek names refers to the trim style, so do not order one expecting it to operate a door.
32) Is the Marks USA 21AC or 22AC a substitute for an L9056 on a storefront or iron gate?
No. The Marks USA 21AC and 22AC are entrance double cylinder ornamental iron mortise locks with a round knob, listed for a 1 inch door. The L9056 is a single cylinder keyed lock for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 4-7/16 inch by 6-1/16 inch by 1 inch case and a 1-1/4 inch by 8 inch armor front. An ornamental iron gate or narrow stile will not take the L9056 case, and a 1-3/4 inch wood or hollow metal door will not take the Marks iron lock.
33) How does the Schlage LE Series mortise lock compare with the L9056 for an apartment or office door?
The Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile-enabled mortise lock with a push button and LED, covering privacy, office and apartment functions on a 1-3/4 inch door, rated for 3 hour fire doors. The L9056 is a Grade 1 mechanical entrance/office lock on a 1-3/4 inch door, and the L Series levers suite with the LE line. Both fit the same leaf thickness; the LE brings credential control and the L9056 stays on the key system with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder.
34) Is the Dormakaba Saffire LX-I-M002 an equal-grade swap for the L9056?
Not on grade. The Dormakaba LX-I-M002 Saffire is an electronic RFID mortise lockset with BLE mobile access rated BHMA Grade 2, while the L9056 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lock certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 security and operational. Where the specification writes Grade 1 mortise, the Dormakaba E-Plex E5086 entry/egress pushbutton and card mortise lock is the Grade 1 electronic option in that line. Confirm which grade the schedule calls for before substituting either.
35) What entrance mortise lock works on a door thinner than 1-3/8 inch or thicker than the L9056 range?
The Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body is listed for doors 1-3/8 inch and over on a 2-1/2 inch backset, offered knob by knob or as the 6310190RRLS right hand reverse lever by lever version. The L9056 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door, though its L cast/forged escutcheon trim covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch. Match the lock case to the leaf you actually have, then pick the trim that spans it.
36) I'm standardizing lock finishes across a building. What finishes does the Schlage L9056 come in?
Twelve finishes, which is usually enough to match whatever is already hanging: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. Satin chrome 626 and satin stainless 630 are the two that show up most on commercial openings. Because the levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT lines, you can carry the same lever and finish from an office door onto an exit device on the same corridor.
37) Which mortise locks look like alternatives to the L9056 but are only components or trim?
Several. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn and the 130W is a mortise thumbturn with a round backplate - both are the thumbturn alone, not a lock. The Falcon MESC600DT is dummy escutcheon lever trim for M9900 Series exit devices. The Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a deadbolt function mortise lock with no handing, and the Ilco BR Series is a glass door bottom rail lock. The L9056 ships as a complete keyed lockset with matching lever, rose and coordinating latch and strike, so none of these replaces it on their own.
