Schlage L9056P OMEB 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage L9056 entrance/office function actually work at the door?
The L9056 is an entrance/office lock with no deadbolt. Either lever retracts the latchbolt unless the outside lever is locked by the key or by the inside thumbturn. With the outside locked, the latch is retracted by key outside or by the inside lever, and the inside lever is always free for immediate egress. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. Because it is a single cylinder keyed lock, there is one cylinder on the outside only.
2) What door thickness and backset does the Schlage L9056 mortise lock require?
Standard build is a 2-3/4 inch backset on a 1-3/4 inch door, which is the usual commercial door thickness. The mortise case is 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, so the door needs a full mortise pocket cut to that case. If your doors are thicker, note that the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors.
3) Will the L9056 latch into the strike already in my frame?
It ships with the Schlage 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner, box type, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the standard ANSI mortise strike footprint. If your existing frame is prepped for a square corner ANSI strike of those dimensions you can reuse the prep; if the frame carries a radius corner strike or a different lip length, plan on using the supplied strike and adjusting the frame.
4) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the Schlage L9056?
Yes. The L9056 is a handed lock, so the hand of the opening has to be given with the order. Pull the door toward you and note which side the hinges are on before you order, and check whether the door swings in or out, since that determines hand versus reverse hand.
5) Which cylinder options can I get with the L9056, and can I order it less cylinder for my own keying?
Four cylinder choices are offered: P conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, L less conventional cylinder, J Schlage FSIC less core, and B SFIC less prep core. The standard build is the conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. If your facility keys its own doors, order L, J, or B and drop in your core. Note the grading shifts with core type: the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security with a conventional cylinder, Grade 2 security with FSIC, and Grade 3 security with SFIC.
6) Is the Schlage L9056 approved for a fire rated door?
The L9000 series latch is ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000 Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, and UL listed for 3-hour fire doors (the exceptions are the L9076 and L9077, not the L9056). UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet, and the letter F plus the UL symbol on the latch front identifies the listing. The line also meets ADA requirements and the Buy American Act.
7) I need a storeroom function instead of entrance/office in a mortise lock - what should I order?
The Schlage L9056 is an entrance/office function, where the outside lever is unlocked by key or inside thumbturn and stays unlocked until relocked. If you want the outside lever always locked and retracted only by key, look at the Accentra 8805FL Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with the Arcadia lever, or the Cal-Royal NM8080 Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset, which offers an interchangeable core option.
8) Which mortise lock should I use on a classroom door instead of the L9056?
The L9056 is an entrance/office function and does not provide classroom locking. For classroom openings, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, also for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both share the same 1-3/4 inch door thickness the L9056 is built for.
9) What do I order for a dormitory or corridor opening that needs a deadbolt, since the L9056 has none?
The L9056 is a non-deadbolt entrance/office function. For a deadbolt at a corridor or dorm room door, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. For privacy with a deadbolt, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, the same door thickness the L9056 is built for.
10) Can I key a group of L9056 locks alike across a building?
Keying is specified at order time. Keyed different is the standard, keyed alike is available when you want one key to open a group of openings, and you can also choose no keying at all with the less-cylinder options. There is a free text field for special cylinder or keying requirements, so master keying or an existing C keyway system can be called out there.
11) Should I use an entrance/office L9056 or a storeroom function lock for an office suite door?
Pick by who needs to control the door. The L9056 lets staff lock the outside lever with the inside thumbturn and leave it unlocked during business hours, which suits an office or suite entry that is secured at the end of the day. A storeroom function keeps the outside lever permanently locked and only a key gets you in, which is what you want on a supply or mechanical room. If storeroom is the right call, ZenSupply carries the Accentra 8805FL Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock and the Cal-Royal NM8080 Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset.
12) What is the closest alternative to a Schlage L9056 entrance/office mortise lock from another brand?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the nearest match we carry: a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, built for 1-3/4 inch doors, the same thickness the L9056 is specified for. Where it differs is the trim and keying ecosystem. The Schlage L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so if you are standardizing an Allegion opening across locks and exit devices, staying with the L9056 keeps the trim and keyway consistent.
13) Does the L9056 have a deadbolt, and what should I order if I need one?
No deadbolt. The L9056 is a non-deadbolt function, relying on the latchbolt with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks it when the door closes. If the opening needs a separate deadbolt, ZenSupply carries the Sargent 4874 double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, the same backset the L9056 uses, and the Cal-Royal NM8440 Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt.
14) Is the Schlage L9056 heavy enough for a high traffic commercial opening?
It is a commercial heavy duty mortise lock, Grade 1, with the lock case built from cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. The series also carries a security blocking hub that prevents picking by removing the levers. For a main office entry or a corridor door taking constant use, that is the right duty class, and it exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 security and operational standards.
15) Is the L9056 an electrified lock, and what do I order if I need access control?
No, the L9056 is purely mechanical. For an electrified opening, the L Series offers motor driven functions that auto detect 12V or 24V DC with customer selectable EL/EU and options like RX, DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor. Alternatives ZenSupply carries include the Schlage Electronics LEMD Grade 1 ENGAGE wireless mortise lock with 125kHz proximity reader and the Command Access ML190 Series motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU on 24VDC.
16) Is the Schlage LE series mortise lock a direct swap for the L9056?
No. The L9056 is a mechanical, non-electronic keyed mortise lock. The Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions, and it is a Grade 2 lock for 1-3/4 inch doors. If your spec calls for Grade 1 mechanical operation, the LE is a different product class; the L9056 is Grade 1 and carries no electronics.
17) If I want keypad access on the same opening rather than a keyed mortise lock, what is the alternative?
The L9056 is keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard. For credential or code entry on a comparable Grade 1 mortise opening, the Alarm Lock DL3500CR Trilogy is a Grade 1 electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes in classroom function for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, and the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors. Note both of those are classroom function, not entrance/office.
18) I only need a non-keyed office or passage mortise lock - what is a simpler option than the L9056?
The L9056 is a keyed single cylinder lock. If the opening does not need a key, the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed, on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors, and the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating. The Hager 3850E shares the L9056 2-3/4 inch backset.
19) Is a BEST 45H mortise lock body a substitute for the L9056?
Not as a complete lockset. The BEST 45HCA is a heavy duty mortise lock body in the public entrance function, field reversible, sold as a lock body; the L9056 ships as a complete handed lockset with Omega lever, rose or escutcheon trim, a 10-072 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 square corner box strike and a cylinder option. Function also differs: public entrance versus entrance/office.
20) What mortise lock should I use for a behavioral health opening instead of the L9056?
The L9056 uses an Omega lever, a standard commercial lever design. For anti-ligature openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. Both are passage rather than keyed entrance/office.
21) Can I use a Sargent 4874 deadbolt in place of the L9056?
They do different jobs. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset - bolt only, no lever and no latch. The L9056 is a latchbolt lockset whose inside lever is always free for immediate egress. If you need both, pair a latching lockset with the deadbolt or move to a function that includes one.
22) What finishes and trim styles does the Omega lever L9056 come in for matching existing doors?
Twelve finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. Trim comes as A or B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon, or N wrought escutcheon. Standard build puts the same Omega lever, rose and finish on both sides with a coordinating latch and strike, so a run of doors matches without mixing parts.
23) Can I get a higher security cylinder in the Schlage L9056?
Yes. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is available on the L Series by specifying a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder in place of the standard conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. Order the lock less conventional cylinder if you are supplying the Primus separately.
