Schlage L9056P 05B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9056 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
That's exactly what it's built for. The L9056 is specified for 1-3/4 inch door thickness with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, so the door needs a standard ANSI mortise pocket. If your doors are thicker, the L Series does offer different door thickness options, but the standard build here is the 1-3/4 inch one. Note the Rose/Escutcheon choice also constrains thickness: the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch.
2) What does the Entrance/Office function with automatic unlocking actually do day to day?
The lever retracts the latchbolt from either side until someone locks the outside lever, either with the key or by turning the inside thumbturn. Once locked, only the key outside or the inside lever will retract the latch. The outside stays locked until it is released by thumbturn or key. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes, and the inside lever is always free, so egress is never blocked. This is the office-door pattern: staff secures it from inside on the way out or at the end of the day.
3) Is this mortise lock fire rated for a labeled door?
Yes. The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors (the exceptions in the family are the L9076 and L9077, not the L9056), and the UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. An F letter and the UL symbol on the latch front indicate the listing. The latch is ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000, Grade 1 Operational and Grade 1 Security.
4) Do I have to specify handing when I order an L9056?
Yes, the L9056 is a handed lock, so you need to determine left or right hand (and reverse) at the opening before ordering. Check which side the hinges are on and which way the door swings from the outside. Some competing mortise bodies are field reversible, such as the BEST 45H public entrance lockbody and the Falcon MA101 passage lock, but this Schlage is ordered to hand.
5) Which cylinder should I choose, conventional or interchangeable core?
Seven cylinder options are offered: P conventional 6-pin in C keyway (the standard build), L less conventional cylinder, J Schlage FSIC less core, R FSIC with core in S123 keyway, T FSIC with construction core, B SFIC less prep core, and H 7-pin SFIC prep with construction core. The trade-off is security grade: with the full conventional cylinder the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, with FSIC interchangeable cores it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with SFIC cores it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security. If you key the building on a small format core system, order B or H and supply your own cores. For a UL437 rated cylinder, specify a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder.
6) Will the L9056 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The lock ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner, box type, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame has an existing ANSI square corner mortise strike of that size, the new strike drops into the same cutout. Curved corner frame preps will need the strike opening addressed. The armor front measures 1-1/4 by 8 inches, which is the standard mortise front prep on a commercial hollow metal frame and door edge.
7) Can I match this lock to the exit devices and other hardware already in my building?
All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a facility can carry one lever design across mortise locks, exit device trim and electronic locks. The L Series can also suite across tubular, exit device and multipoint locks. Twelve finishes are offered on this lock, from 605 bright brass and 606 satin brass through 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze, so matching an existing finish schedule is straightforward.
8) Should I use the L9056 entrance/office lock or a classroom function lock instead?
Pick by who needs to control the lock. The L9056 lets the occupant lock the outside lever from inside with a thumbturn, which suits offices, break rooms and tenant suites where staff secure the door themselves. If you need the door locked only by key from the outside with no inside thumbturn, that is classroom function, and ZenSupply carries mortise options such as the Cal-Royal NM8070 Grade 1 classroom lockset and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 Grade 1 classroom lockset, both specified for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a door that must always latch locked outside and be free inside, a storeroom function like the Cal-Royal NM8080 or Accentra 8805FL is the right family.
9) Is there an equivalent entrance/office mortise lock from another brand for the same prep?
The closest match ZenSupply carries is the Cal-Royal NM8050, a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, specified for 1-3/4 inch doors, the same thickness as the L9056. Hager's 3800 Series 3850E is an office function mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset, but it is non-keyed, so it is not a substitute where you need key control on the outside. Baldwin's 6301 entry/apartment mortise bodies use a 2-1/2 inch backset and will not drop into a 2-3/4 inch backset prep.
10) If an office door needs to stay locked to the outside at all times instead of being unlockable by thumbturn, what mortise lock should be used?
Use a storeroom-function lock rather than the L9056, whose outside lever is locked until unlocked by thumbturn or key. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors.
11) What mortise lock should I use for a classroom door instead of the Schlage L9056?
The L9056 is an Entrance/Office function, which is not a classroom function. For classroom openings, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, and the Marks USA LA318GJ is a Grade 1 classroom security indicator mortise lockset with an ANSI strike and steel escutcheon.
12) Does the Schlage L9056 include a deadbolt, and what should I order if I need one?
No - the L9056 is a non-deadbolt entrance/office function; an auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. If a deadbolt is required, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty corridor/dormitory mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, and the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset matching the L9056 backset.
13) What is included, and does one part number cover both sides of the door?
Yes, a complete lockset. You get the same lever, rose and finish on both sides of the door, with the coordinating latch and strike. The 05 trim is the Omega lever. Nothing extra is needed to trim the opening, though thumbturn operation is part of the function so no separate deadbolt or auxiliary trim is required.
14) Does this lock need power or wiring?
No. The L9056 is a purely mechanical mortise lock, no wiring, no batteries, no power supply. If you want credential or keypad access in the same mortise prep, ZenSupply stocks electrified and electronic alternatives including the Schlage CO-100 standalone keypad mortise lock (Grade 1, 1-3/4 inch doors), the Schlage ENGAGE LEMD wireless mortise lock with 125kHz proximity reader, and the Command Access ML190 motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU on 24VDC.
15) Is this lock ADA compliant and suitable for a government job?
Yes on both counts. The L Series meets ADA requirements and meets the Buy American Act. All levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code, and the line also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings, which matters on coastal work. It is a commercial, heavy duty lock rather than a residential one.
16) Do I have to pick a rose or an escutcheon, and what is the difference?
Four trim options are offered on the L9056: A wrought rose, B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon, and N wrought escutcheon. A rose is the small round plate behind the lever, an escutcheon is the long plate that covers the cylinder and thumbturn as well. Door thickness drives the choice at the edges of the range: the L escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. Escutcheon trim is also a way to cover an older door face with existing prep marks.
17) Is there a simpler non-keyed option if the office door does not need a key cylinder?
Yes. The L9056 is keyed with a single cylinder. If no key is needed, the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon that is non-keyed on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose trim on the same 2-3/4 inch backset. Both Hager units cover 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors.
18) What is the difference between the Schlage L9056 and the Schlage Electronics LE or CO Series mortise locks?
The L9056 is a non-electronic mechanical mortise lock, keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. The Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and 3-hour fire rating, the LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 LE Series mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the CO-100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic mortise lock with keypad reader in a privacy function. Credential-based locks need power and programming; the L9056 does not.
19) Which mortise locks are alternatives for behavioral health or ligature-resistant openings where the L9056 lever is unsuitable?
The L9056 uses an Omega lever trim. For anti-ligature openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant. All three are passage function rather than keyed entrance/office.
20) Is the Falcon MA101 a substitute for the Schlage L9056?
No. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating - passage means the latch is always retractable from both sides with no locking. The L9056 is a keyed entrance/office lock whose outside lever can be locked by key or thumbturn while the inside lever stays free for egress.
21) What should I use instead of the L9056 on a door thinner than 1-3/4 inches?
The L9056 lock is specified for a 1-3/4 inch door thickness. For thinner or differing door thicknesses, the Alarm Lock DL3500CR and DL2700CR electronic mortise locks cover 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors, and the Marks USA 21AC and 22AC ornamental iron mortise locks are built for 1 inch doors. Those are different functions, so confirm the opening requirement before substituting.
22) For a privacy bathroom door, what mortise lock replaces the entrance/office L9056?
The L9056 is an entrance/office function and not intended for privacy use. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset covering 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors - the same backset the L9056 uses.
23) If an access control system needs to release the mortise lock electrically, what replaces the L9056?
The L9056 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock. For electrified release, the Command Access ML190 Series is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock in storeroom function with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC, and the BEST 45HW Series is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V or 24V.
24) How is the lock case built, and can someone defeat it by pulling the lever off?
The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, and a security blocking hub prevents picking the lock by removing the levers. The locking lever bushing also does away with exposed screws on the inside levers. The latch is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000, Grade 1 Operational and Grade 1 Security, and the line is listed to ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40.
25) Can I order a mortise lock body only instead of the complete L9056 lockset?
The L9056 is supplied as a keyed lockset with Omega lever trim, rose or escutcheon, and matching strike. If a lock body alone is wanted, the BEST 45H Series is a heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function with field reversible operation, and the 45HCA Series is a heavy duty mortise lockbody in intruder function. Those are different functions from entrance/office.
26) Are the Emtek 3102 and 3104 mortise entrance locksets alternatives to the Schlage L9056?
No. The Emtek 3102 Memphis and 3104 Hamilton mortise entrance locksets are dummy function - trim with no latch operation - as are the 3019 Brisbane and 3106 Manhattan. The L9056 is a keyed Grade 1 entrance/office mortise lock with a working latchbolt and auxiliary deadlatch.
