Schlage L9056P ACCB 626 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage L9056 entrance/office function actually work day to day?
The L9056 is an entrance/office lock with no deadbolt. The lever retracts the latchbolt from either side until the outside lever is locked, either by key outside or by the inside thumbturn. With the outside locked, the latch is retracted by the key outside or by the inside lever, so egress is never blocked. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door closes. Practically: staff thumbturn the office locked at night, and a key opens it in the morning.
2) Do I have to specify hand when ordering an L9056 mortise lock?
Yes, hand is required. The L9056 is a handed lock and is ordered left hand or right hand. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your left it is left hand, hinges on your right is right hand. Order the wrong hand and the thumbturn and key side end up on the wrong face of the door.
3) Can I get the Schlage L9056 less cylinder so I can put in my own interchangeable core?
Four cylinder choices cover that. P is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, L is less conventional cylinder, J is prepped for a Schlage full-size interchangeable core less core, and B is prepped for a small format interchangeable core less core. If you key your own building on an SFIC system, order B and drop your core in. Note the grade trade-off: with the conventional cylinder the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, with FSIC it is Grade 1 operational / Grade 2 security, and with SFIC it is Grade 1 operational / Grade 3 security.
4) Is the Schlage L9056 approved for a fire rated office door?
Yes. The L9000 Series latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors (the exceptions are the L9076 and L9077, not the L9056), and the series is UL/cUL listed for A label single doors to 4 x 10 feet and pairs to 8 x 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol on the latch front are how an inspector confirms it in the field. The lock is also ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000 certified, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, and meets ADA requirements.
5) My door is 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inches thick. Will this Schlage mortise lock work?
Not as ordered. The L9056 as specified here is a 1-3/4 inch door lock, so a 1-5/8 or 1-7/8 inch leaf is outside it. Options exist in the L Series for other door thicknesses, and on the trim side the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inches. If you are working on an electronic retrofit in that range instead, the Alarm Lock Trilogy DL3500CR and DL2700CR classroom mortise locks are listed for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors.
6) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage L9056 entrance/office mortise lock?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is the nearest match: it is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lockset with an entrance/office function and an auxiliary deadlatch, rated for a 1-3/4 inch door. The Schlage L9056 is also Grade 1 entrance/office, heavy duty, with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1-3/4 inch door thickness. The Schlage runs an Accent lever on handed left or right assemblies with a choice of wrought rose, cast escutcheon or wrought escutcheon trim.
7) If the opening needs to stay locked from the outside at all times instead of office function, what mortise lock should I use?
Use a storeroom function instead. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors with an interchangeable core option. The Schlage L9056 is an entrance/office function, where the outside lever stays unlocked until locked by key or inside thumbturn, so it is not the right pick for an opening that must never be left unsecured.
8) Can I use a Baldwin 6301LS entry/apartment mortise lock in place of the Schlage L9056?
Only if the door prep matches. The Baldwin 6301LS is a lever by lever entry/apartment mortise lock body on a 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 inch and over. The Schlage L9056 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case and a 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike, so the two are not interchangeable in an existing pocket without re-prepping.
9) Can I order several L9056 locks keyed alike for one building?
Keying is a required selection: keyed different (the standard), keyed alike for multiple locks, or none if you are ordering less cylinder and supplying your own cores. Keyed alike puts every lock in the order on one key, which is what property managers usually want across a suite of offices. There is also a free-text field for special cylinder or keying requirements if the locks need to go on an existing master system.
10) Which rose or escutcheon should I pick for the L9056 on a 1-3/4 inch door?
All four trim options work at 1-3/4 inches. A and B are wrought roses. The L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors, and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. Escutcheons give you a taller plate that hides older trim scars; roses are the smaller footprint. All of this is with the Accent lever, and the lock ships with the same lever, rose and finish on both faces.
11) What finishes does the Accent lever L9056 come in so I can match the rest of my openings?
Eight finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, and 643E aged bronze. Satin chrome (626) is the usual commercial standard. If the building already runs Von Duprin exit devices, the L Series levers suite with them, and with LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT trim, so one lever design can carry across the whole facility.
12) What is the difference between the L9056 and a storeroom or classroom mortise lock?
The L9056 lets an occupant lock the outside lever from inside with a thumbturn, and unlock it again, so it suits an office someone controls from within. A storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked at all times with key-only entry, which is what you want on a mechanical room or supply closet. A classroom function is keyed from the corridor side only. Within our mortise range, the Accentra 8805FL and Cal-Royal NM8080 are Grade 1 storeroom locks, and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 and Cal-Royal NM8070 are Grade 1 classroom functions.
13) Is there another brand's Grade 1 entrance/office mortise lock that matches the L9056?
The closest cross-brand equivalent we carry is the Cal-Royal NM8050, a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, also built for 1-3/4 inch doors. Functionally it covers the same opening. The Schlage L9000 stays the pick when the building is already on Schlage C keyway or needs to suite with Von Duprin exit devices.
14) Is the L9056 a hard-wired or electronic lock, and what if I need access control on that door?
No, the L9056 is purely mechanical, keyed with a thumbturn and no electronics. For a credentialed opening on the same style of mortise prep, we carry Schlage Electronics options including the Grade 1 ENGAGE LEMD wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and the CO-100 standalone keypad mortise lock for 1-3/4 inch doors. The L Series itself also offers electrified functions that auto-detect 12V/24V DC with selectable EL/EU and RX, DPS and latchbolt monitoring.
15) Does the Schlage L9056 meet Buy American requirements for a government job?
It does. The L Series meets the Buy American Act, and it also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings, which matters on coastal and state work. For accessibility, all L Series levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code, and the series meets ADA requirements.
16) Is there a keyless or electronic alternative to the Schlage L9056 for the same opening?
Yes. The Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a mobile-enabled mortise lock covering privacy, office and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors with a 3 hour fire rating, and the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 is an electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock. The L9056 is a mechanical lock with no electronics, keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard.
17) Is the Hager 3850E office mortise lock a substitute for the Schlage L9056?
Not directly. The Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset, but it is non-keyed and fits doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inches. The Schlage L9056 is keyed with a single cylinder and takes a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, with SFIC and FSIC less-core builds also available. If the opening needs key control, the keyed L9056 is the one that matches.
18) What should I order if the door only needs to latch and not lock?
A passage function lock. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose trim on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Schlage L9056 is a keyed entrance/office lock, so it carries a cylinder and thumbturn you would not need on a passage opening.
19) Is the Sargent 7925 a good alternative for a dormitory or apartment corridor door?
It is worth looking at for that opening. The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty corridor/dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. The Schlage L9056 is a Grade 1 entrance/office non-deadbolt function with a single cylinder, so it latches only and adds no deadbolt throw.
20) Do I need to specify handing on the Schlage L9056 the way I would on a field reversible lock?
Yes. The L9056 is a handed lock and is ordered as left hand or right hand. Some peers avoid that step: the BEST 45H Series heavy duty public entrance mortise lock body and the Falcon MA101 passage lock are both field reversible, so one part covers either swing. Confirm the door swing before releasing the Schlage order.
21) For a behavioral health or ligature resistant opening, what should I specify instead of the L9056?
Look at the TownSteel MRX-L-01, a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset with passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, or the MRX-A-01 with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. The Schlage L9056 uses an Accent lever with rose or escutcheon trim and is a keyed entrance/office lock, which is a standard lever profile rather than a ligature resistant one.
22) How durable is the L9056 for a high traffic office corridor, and what is the lock case made of?
It is a heavy duty commercial lock, rated Grade 1 for both operational and security under ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000, with an ANSI F04 function designation. The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. A security blocking hub prevents picking by pulling the lever off, and the auxiliary deadlatch stops the latchbolt being shimmed once the door closes.
23) Can I get a UL437 high security cylinder on this Schlage mortise lock?
Yes. The standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in the C keyway, but a UL437 listed locking cylinder is available on the L Series by specifying a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder. That is the route to take on an opening where key control and drill/pick resistance are written into the spec.
24) What mortise lock covers a bathroom or bedroom privacy opening instead?
The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches. The Schlage L9056 is an entrance/office function with a key cylinder outside, which is a different operation from a privacy set.
25) Is a Sargent 130KB mortise thumbturn an alternative to the L9056?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn, a trim piece rather than a complete lock. The Schlage L9056 is a full Grade 1 mortise lockset with case, Accent lever trim, latch and a 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike. Order the thumbturn only if you are replacing that single component on an existing lock.
