Schlage L9070P 17B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9070 classroom mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset prep?
That is exactly the prep the L9070 is built for: 2-3/4 inch backset, 1-3/4 inch door thickness. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches and the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches, so the pocket and edge cutout have to match a standard ANSI mortise prep. One caution on trim: the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors and the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors, so if your opening is thicker than 1-3/4 the trim choice matters as much as the case.
2) What does the L9070 classroom function actually do when a teacher needs to lock the door?
Classroom function, keyed outside only. The latchbolt retracts from either side unless the outside lever is locked by key; once locked, only the key retracts it from outside. The inside lever is always free, so egress is never blocked no matter how the outside is set. There is no thumbturn and no deadbolt on the L9070, which means the teacher has to step into the corridor with a key to lock down. If your lockdown procedure requires locking from inside the room, this is the wrong function for it.
3) Is the Schlage L9070 rated for a fire door?
The L9070 latch is UL listed for a 3-hour fire door, and Schlage lists UL/cUL for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how the inspector confirms it in the field. It is also certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012, Series 1000, Grade 1 Operational and Grade 1 Security, and it meets ADA requirements.
4) Does the L9070 mortise lock have to be ordered handed?
Yes, the L9070 is a handed lock, so you need to determine the hand of the opening before you order. Stand outside the door: the side the hinges are on and the direction the door swings give you left hand, right hand, left hand reverse or right hand reverse. Getting it wrong on a mortise lock means the lever hangs the wrong way and the latch faces the wrong direction. If you want a lock body you can flip on site, the Falcon MA101 and the BEST 45H are field reversible, but those are passage and public entrance functions, not classroom.
5) Can I get the Schlage L9070 to work on my existing school master key system?
Cylinder choice is where you make that call, and there are seven options. Standard is P, a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway. If your facility runs small format interchangeable core, choose B for SFIC less prep core or H for a 7-pin SFIC prep with a construction core. For Schlage full size IC, J ships less core, R comes with a core in the S123 keyway, and T comes with a construction core. L is less conventional cylinder if you are supplying your own. Order the lock keyed different, keyed alike across a group of doors, or with no cylinder at all when you pick a less-cylinder option. Note the grade shifts with the cylinder: FSIC cores give Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, SFIC cores give Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security.
6) What strike comes with the Schlage L9070 and will it drop into my existing frame cutout?
The 10-072 strike ships standard: 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box behind it. That is the common ANSI square corner frame prep, so on a hollow metal frame already cut for a square corner mortise strike it usually lands in the existing cutout. If your frame has radius corner prep or a different lip length for the jamb-to-stop dimension, you will need a different strike rather than a different lock.
7) What are the alternatives to the Schlage L9070 if I need a Grade 1 classroom mortise lock from another brand?
Two mechanical equivalents sit next to it. The Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, also 1-3/4 inch. If you want the lock to show status on the corridor side, the Marks USA LA318GJ is a Grade 1 classroom security indicator mortise lockset with an ANSI strike and a steel escutcheon measuring 8-1/2 x 2-3/4 x 7/16 inches, for 1-3/4 inch doors. What keeps buyers on the Schlage is keying: if the building is already on Schlage C keyway or Schlage FSIC, staying in the L Series keeps one key system.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage L9070 classroom mortise lock?
The Cal-Royal NM8070 is the nearest match: a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, built for a 1-3/4 inch door. That lines up with the L9070, which is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lock for a 1-3/4 inch door with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed. The Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a second equivalent, a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset in the ML2000 Series for a 1-3/4 inch door. All three keep the inside lever free for egress in classroom function, so any of them serves the same corridor-to-classroom opening.
9) Which mortise lock should be used instead of the L9070 when the classroom door needs to be locked down from the inside?
Use the TownSteel FME-4000, an electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset with RFID technology, Grade 1 heavy duty, for a 1-3/4 inch door. The BEST 45HCAINL is a heavy duty mortise lock body with intruder function. Intruder function is the difference that matters: the L9070 is keyed classroom function, where the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key from the outside, so a teacher standing inside must open the door and key the outside to secure it. If the specification calls for a lockdown initiated from the classroom side, the L9070 is not the part.
10) What is the difference between the Schlage L9070 and the Accentra 8805FL for a classroom door?
Function. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever; storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked at all times and takes a key for every entry. The L9070 is classroom function: the latchbolt is retracted by lever from either side unless the outside is locked by key, so the door can be left unlocked for passage during class and keyed shut when it is not. The Cal-Royal NM8080 is the same storeroom distinction, a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for a 1-3/4 inch door. Choose storeroom for a door that must never stand unlocked, classroom for one that toggles.
11) Is there an electronic classroom mortise lock that replaces a keyed L9070?
Yes, in several forms. The Alarm Lock DL3500CR is a Grade 1 Trilogy electronic mortise lock with classroom function and 300 user codes; the DL2700CR is the Trilogy T2 electronic mortise lock with classroom function and weatherproof design. Both fit doors 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch thick, which is a range rather than the single 1-3/4 inch the L9070 is built to, so a thinner door that the L9070 will not take may still take the Alarm Lock. The TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID for a 1-3/4 inch door if credentials rather than codes are wanted. The L9070 is a non-electronic lock keyed to a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, so moving to any of these replaces the key system on that opening with a code or credential system.
12) Should I use a mortise classroom lock like the L9070 or a keypad classroom lock instead?
A mechanical mortise lock is the right pick when you want no batteries, no programming, and a lock that ties into an existing key system. The L9070 is fully mechanical, heavy duty, Grade 1. If you want to stop issuing keys to teachers, ZenSupply carries electronic classroom mortise locks: the Alarm Lock DL3500CR Trilogy holds 300 user codes and is Grade 1 classroom function, and the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID for credential-based access. Watch door thickness if you switch: the Trilogy DL2700CR and DL3500CR are specified for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, while the L9070 and the TownSteel FME-2000 are 1-3/4 inch.
13) Which finishes does the Schlage L9070 come in, and can I match the levers on my Von Duprin exit devices?
Twelve finishes are offered on the L9070: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. For a facility standardizing across openings, the useful part is that all L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so the 17 lever on a classroom door can match the lever trim on the exit devices down the corridor. The lever, rose and finish are the same on both sides of the door as standard.
14) Do I have to pick a rose or an escutcheon when ordering an L9070, and what is the difference?
You pick one of four trim options and it is a required decision. A and B are wrought roses, which are the small round plates behind the lever. L is a cast or forged escutcheon and N is a wrought escutcheon, both long plates that run vertically on the door face. Door thickness narrows it: the L escutcheon is available on 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N escutcheon on 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. Escutcheons hide older or oversized prep from a lock you are replacing, which is why they get specified on retrofits. Roses are the cleaner look on new prep.
15) Is the Schlage L9070 mortise lock approved for a government job with Buy American requirements?
The L Series meets the Buy American Act. Beyond that, the L9070 carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings, ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 with UL listing, and complies with the California Referenced Standards Code for all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less. For a specifier writing a public school or municipal package, those are the lines that usually have to be met.
16) How well does the L9070 hold up on a high traffic door, and what is the lock case made of?
Heavy duty, and built for commercial traffic rather than residential. The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, which is the corrosion-resistant plating Schlage uses on the mortise body. Security features that matter on an abused door: the security blocking hub stops someone picking the lock by pulling the levers off, and the auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt whenever the door is closed so it cannot be loided. Schlage states the L9000 exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 security and operational standards.
17) I need a mortise lock with a deadbolt for a classroom. Does the L9070 have one?
No deadbolt on the L9070. It is a non-deadbolt classroom function: latchbolt only, held by an auxiliary deadlatch when the door closes. If the opening needs a deadbolt, look at a different function. Within Schlage's own line, the ENGAGE LEMD is a Grade 1 mobile-enabled mortise lock with a deadbolt and a 3-hour fire rating. Across brands, ZenSupply carries the Sargent 7925 dormitory exit function mortise lock with a single cylinder deadbolt, Grade 1 heavy duty, and the Cal-Royal NM8440 Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors.
18) Can the Schlage L9070 be electrified for access control later?
Not this one as ordered. The L9070 is a mechanical lock. The L Series does offer electrified functions that auto detect 12V or 24V DC with customer-selectable EL/EU and options like request-to-exit, door position switch, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor, and those electrified functions are UL19X listed for single-point locking. Those are separate L Series models, not a field kit for this one. If you are retrofitting access control into an existing mortise pocket from another brand, ZenSupply also carries the Command Access ML190 motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU on 24VDC, and the BEST 45HW wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V/24V.
19) Can I order a group of Schlage L9070 locks keyed alike for one building?
Keyed alike is a standard option on the L9070, alongside keyed different, which is what ships by default. Keyed alike puts every lock in the group on one key, which is how a maintenance department handles a wing of classrooms or a set of like doors. There is also a field for special cylinder or keying requirements if you are matching an existing master system rather than starting fresh, and a no-cylinder option when the locks are going to a locksmith to be cored on site.
20) What mortise lock takes the place of an L9070 on an office or general entrance door instead of a classroom?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for a 1-3/4 inch door, and the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed, on a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch. Office/entrance function adds inside control the classroom L9070 does not have: on the L9070 the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key only. Both the NM8050 and the 3850E share the L9070's 1-3/4 inch door thickness, and the 3850E matches its 2-3/4 inch backset, so the door prep carries over.
21) Which mortise lock should be specified instead of an L9070 for a behavioral health or anti-ligature opening?
The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel, and the MRX-A-01 is the ligature resistant arch trim version in satin stainless; both are passage function on a 1-3/4 inch door. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset, ligature resistant and ADA compliant. All three are passage function, so they latch without locking, where the L9070 is a keyed classroom lock with a single cylinder. If the opening needs both ligature resistant trim and keyed control, the L Series carries a Gold Standard ligature resistant trim option for behavioral health applications.
22) Does a Sargent 130KB or 130W work as a replacement for a Schlage L9070?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn in the 8200 Series and the 130W is a mortise thumbturn with a round backplate in the 7800 Series. Those are thumbturn trim pieces, not lock bodies. The L9070 is a complete Grade 1 mortise lock with a lever, a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case and a 10-072 box strike. A thumbturn goes on a lock, it does not take the place of one. The same caution applies to the Falcon MESC600DT, which is a dummy escutcheon lever trim for M9900 Series exit devices.
23) What is the difference between the L9070 and a mortise deadbolt like the Sargent 4874 or Kaba Ilco 185?
The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset in the 4870 Series, and the Kaba Ilco 185 is a mortise deadbolt with no handing. Both are deadbolt-only bodies with no lever and no latch. The L9070 is a non-deadbolt classroom function with a latchbolt operated by a 17 lever and an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. The 4874 shares the L9070's 2-3/4 inch backset, but the L9070 is handed where the Ilco 185 has no handing, so a deadbolt is an addition to an opening, not a substitute for the lockset.
24) Can a Baldwin 6301 or 6310 mortise lock body be swapped into a door prepped for a Schlage L9070?
Not without changing the prep. The Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment and 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock bodies are built on a 2-1/2 inch backset, in both knob by knob and lever by lever versions such as the 6301LS and the 6310190RRLS right hand reverse. The L9070 is a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the cylinder and spindle centerlines fall a quarter inch apart and the existing pocket and face bore will not line up. Function differs as well: the Baldwins are entrance/apartment and entrance/storeroom, while the L9070 is classroom.
25) If a door does not need to be keyed at all, what mortise lock takes the place of an L9070?
The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, in the MA Series. The Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the 3810E is the same passage lock with an escutcheon, both for doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch. All three latch the door without locking it, which removes the cylinder entirely; the L9070 is a keyed lock supplied with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. The Hager pair shares the L9070's 2-3/4 inch backset, and the MA101 being field reversible means it does not have to be ordered to hand the way the L9070 does.
26) What mortise lock covers a dormitory or corridor door where the L9070 classroom function is not right?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. Corridor/dormitory function throws a deadbolt, where the L9070 is a non-deadbolt classroom function whose security comes from a latchbolt deadlocked by an auxiliary latch. The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function with field reversible operation, for a corridor door that should stay unlocked to traffic and be secured by key.
27) What mortise lock handles a restroom or bedroom door where the L9070 would be the wrong function?
The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for a 1-3/4 inch door, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inch. Privacy function locks from the occupied side without a key, which is what a restroom or bedroom needs; the L9070 is keyed classroom function, locked and unlocked from the outside by key. The 3840S matches the L9070's 2-3/4 inch backset and both peers suit the same 1-3/4 inch door.
28) How does the Schlage L9070 compare to the Schlage Electronics LE and CO mortise locks?
They differ in grade, credential and function. The LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a mobile enabled deadbolt with LED, Greenwich trim, right hand, rated 3 hours for fire. The LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment, 3 hour fire rating, 1-3/4 inch door. The CO-100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic mortise lock in privacy function with a keypad reader, 1-3/4 inch door. The L9070 is Grade 1, non-electronic, classroom function, keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, and the L Series is UL listed for 3 hour fire doors. All share the 1-3/4 inch door, so the decision is credential type and function, not door prep thickness.
29) For a facility standardizing on small format interchangeable cores, how does the L9070 compare to a BEST mortise lock?
The L9070 can be ordered for SFIC directly: cylinder option B is SFIC less prep core and option H is a 7-pin SFIC prep with construction core, alongside Schlage FSIC options J, R and T and the conventional 6-pin P. With SFIC interchangeable core cylinders the L9000 rates Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security; with FSIC it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, against Grade 1 security with the standard cylinder. The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body in the 45H Series, public entrance function with field reversible operation, if the standard is set on BEST bodies rather than on the core alone.
30) Is there a keypad mortise lock with a key override that can stand in for a keyed L9070?
The BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override, and the Accentra NTM623-NR is a Grade 1 nexTouch Generation 3 mortise lock with a capacitive touchscreen keypad, no deadbolt, with cylinder override. Both keep a mechanical key path while moving day to day entry to a code, which is the practical difference from the L9070, where the only credential is the key in a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. The NTM623-NR matches the L9070 in being a no-deadbolt mortise lock.
31) Can I add a high security key cylinder to the Schlage L9070?
Yes. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is an option on the L Series, specified as a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder. That is the route if the classroom or lab door needs key control against unauthorized duplication. Ordering it means choosing a less-cylinder option on the lock (L for less conventional cylinder, or J for FSIC less core) and supplying the Primus cylinder against it.
32) Are the Emtek mortise entrance locksets an alternative to a Schlage L9070?
No, not for a working opening. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function, meaning they are fixed trim with no latch and no keyed operation. The L9070 is a commercial keyed classroom lock with a single cylinder and a working latchbolt. Dummy sets belong on an inactive leaf or a false door where the hardware only has to match the active one.
33) Do the Dormakaba E-Plex and PowerPlex mortise locks fit the same opening as a Schlage L9070?
They serve different doors. The E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 entry/egress electronic pushbutton and card lock in a back to back mortise configuration. The E-Plex 2066 is an electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock built for wide stile, and the PowerPlex P2066 is the self-powered counterpart in the PowerPlex 2000 Series. The Saffire LX-M is an electronic RFID mortise lockset with BLE at BHMA Grade 2. The L9070 is a Grade 1 mechanical classroom lock for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case, so the wide stile E-Plex 2066 in particular addresses an aluminum stile opening rather than the standard 1-3/4 inch door the L9070 is prepped for.
