Schlage L9076P 01B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Schlage L9076 be used on a fire rated door?
No. The L Series mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors with the exception of the L9076 and L9077, so the classroom holdback function is not a fire door lock. If the opening is fire rated, use a different L Series classroom function, or a rated classroom mortise from another line such as the Corbin Russwin ML2003 or Cal-Royal NM8070 Grade 1 classroom mortise locksets.
2) What does the holdback feature on the L9076 classroom lock actually do?
Holdback lets staff leave the latchbolt retracted so the door stays push-open. You turn the inside lever and rotate the key a full 360 degrees to set it. Day to day it works as a classroom lock: either lever retracts the latchbolt unless the outside lever is keyed off, and once locked the latchbolt is retracted by key outside or by the inside lever. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
3) Is the Schlage L9076 handed, and do I need to specify hand when ordering?
Yes, handing has to be specified. The L9076 is a handed lock, not field reversible. Confirm the swing at the opening (hand and bevel) before you order, because the wrong hand will not operate correctly.
4) Does the L9076 come with a cylinder, and what keyway?
Depends which cylinder option you pick. The P option ships a conventional 6-pin cylinder in C keyway, which is also the standard cylinder for the lock. The other three are less-cylinder for keying in the field or by your locksmith: L is less conventional cylinder, J is Schlage FSIC less core, and B is SFIC less prep core. Keying is ordered as keyed different or keyed alike, or you can select the none option when going with a less-cylinder configuration.
5) Does using an interchangeable core cylinder change the security grade of this Schlage mortise lock?
It does. The L9000 lock is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, but with Schlage FSIC interchangeable cores it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with SFIC cores it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security. If a spec calls for Grade 1 security, order the conventional cylinder rather than a core-prepped option.
6) What is a cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage L9076 classroom mortise lock?
Two mechanical Grade 1 classroom mortise locksets are close cross-brand counterparts. The Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset in the ML2000 Series, also listed for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage L9076 is a Grade 1 classroom holdback function on 1-3/4 inch doors with a 2-3/4 inch backset; the holdback feature, activated by turning the inside lever and rotating the key 360 degrees, is specific to the L9076 and is not part of the plain classroom function on the NM8070 or ML2003.
7) I need a classroom mortise lock on a fire-rated opening - what should I use instead of the L9076?
The L9076 is excluded from the Schlage L Series UL listing for 3-hour fire doors, so for a labeled classroom opening look at a peer that carries a fire rating. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lock with a fire rating, though its function is passage rather than classroom. Among classroom-function peers, the Cal-Royal NM8070 and Corbin Russwin ML2003 are both Grade 1 classroom mortise locksets for 1-3/4 inch doors. Confirm the label requirement for your opening against the specific function you order.
8) Is there a keypad or credential classroom mortise lock instead of a keyed one like the L9076?
Yes. The L9076 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. Electronic classroom-function mortise alternatives include the Alarm Lock DL2700CR Trilogy T2 and DL3500CR, both Grade 1 classroom-function keypad mortise locks for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, and the TownSteel FME-2000, a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID. Note the Alarm Lock door thickness range differs from the 1-3/4 inch the L9076 is built for, so verify your door.
9) What classroom mortise lock lets staff lock the door from inside the room?
The L9076 classroom holdback function locks the outside lever by key from the outside only; the inside lever is always free for immediate egress. For intruder or classroom-security locking initiated from inside, look at the BEST 45HCA heavy duty mortise lockbody with intruder function, or the TownSteel FME-4000, an electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset, Grade 1 heavy duty, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Marks USA LA318GJ is a Grade 1 classroom security indicator mortise lockset with ANSI strike for 1-3/4 inch doors.
10) What strike ships with the Schlage L9076 and will it work in my existing frame prep?
Standard strike is the 10-072, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the common ANSI frame prep, so it lines up with most hollow metal frames already cut for a mortise lock. Lip length is what to watch: heavy stop or trim conditions may need a longer lip strike than the 1-3/16 inch supplied.
11) Will the L9076 levers match Von Duprin exit devices on other doors in the building?
Yes. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so you can carry the same 01 lever design and finish across mortise locks and exit device trim in a building. Twelve finishes are offered here, from 605 bright brass through 630 satin stainless and 622 matte black.
12) I need a classroom mortise lock that is ADA compliant for a school corridor. Does this one qualify?
The L Series meets ADA requirements, and all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. The 01 lever design is a lever rather than a knob, which is what ADA operable-hardware requirements call for. Note the L9076 holdback function is the exception to the L Series 3-hour fire listing, so it belongs on a non-rated corridor or classroom door.
13) Should I choose a rose or an escutcheon trim on this mortise lock?
Four trims are offered: A and B wrought roses, the L cast or forged escutcheon, and the N wrought escutcheon. Roses are the smaller footprint and are what most new openings use. An escutcheon is the choice when you are covering old trim marks or matching escutcheon hardware elsewhere in the building, and it also buys you door thickness range, L covering 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and N covering 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch.
14) Is there a deadbolt in the L9076, and what keeps the latch from being shimmed?
No deadbolt. The L9076 is a non-deadbolt single cylinder classroom function. Security at the latch comes from the auxiliary latch, which deadlocks the latchbolt whenever the door is closed. If the job requires a deadbolt, a Grade 1 mortise deadbolt such as the Sargent 4874 double cylinder with a 2-3/4 inch backset is a separate device.
15) What are the alternatives to the Schlage L9076 if I want a Grade 1 classroom mortise lock with electronic access instead of a key?
The L9076 is purely mechanical, no electronics. For keypad or credential control on a classroom door, ZenSupply carries the Alarm Lock DL3500CR Trilogy Grade 1 classroom electronic mortise with 300 user codes (1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors), the DL2700CR weatherproof classroom version, and the TownSteel FME-2000 Grade 1 RFID classroom mortise for 1-3/4 inch doors. The TownSteel FME-4000 adds an intruder classroom function.
16) What is a comparable mechanical Grade 1 classroom mortise lock from another brand?
Two direct mechanical equivalents in the catalogue: the Corbin Russwin ML2003 Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, also 1-3/4 inch. Neither is listed with the holdback feature, so if leaving the latch held retracted is the point, stay with the L9076. For a classroom lock with a visual status indicator, the Marks USA LA318GJ is a Grade 1 classroom security indicator mortise for 1-3/4 inch doors.
17) Can I get the L9076 keyed alike with other locks for one master key?
Yes. Keying is selected at order: keyed different is standard, or keyed alike when you want several locks on one key. Standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in C keyway. Any specific keying or cylinder requirement (existing system, Primus, core prep) goes in the special cylinder and keying requirements field with the order.
18) Would a storeroom mortise lock work in place of the L9076?
They behave differently. The L9076 classroom function lets the lever retract the latchbolt from either side unless the outside lever is locked by key, and the inside lever always works. On a storeroom function such as the Accentra 8805FL Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with Arcadia lever, the Cal-Royal NM8080 Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors, or the Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body, the outside trim is normally secure and entry is by key. Choose storeroom where the room must stay locked at all times and classroom where a key holder sets the outside lever free.
19) Which mortise locks look like substitutes for the L9076 but are not?
Several mortise products are not functional replacements. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a deadbolt only, so neither has a latchbolt or lever operation. Sargent 130KB and 130W are mortise thumbturns, trim pieces rather than locks. Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are dummy function, and the Falcon MESC600DT is dummy escutcheon lever trim. The L9076 is a keyed single-cylinder Grade 1 classroom holdback mortise lock with a 01 lever.
20) I need an access-controlled mortise lock on the same door prep - what are the Schlage options besides the L9076?
Within the Schlage family, the CO-100 standalone electronic mortise lock with keypad reader is Grade 1 heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch doors, though its function is privacy. The Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with 125kHz proximity reader, mobile-enabled deadbolt with LED and Greenwich trim, rated 3 hours for fire. The LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors. The L9076 remains the mechanical keyed classroom holdback choice.
21) What mortise lock should I specify for a behavioral health or ligature-resistant opening instead of the L9076?
The L9076 is a standard 01 lever classroom holdback lock. For ligature-resistant openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset with passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset, ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All three are passage function, so a keyed classroom opening needs a different function selection.
22) How durable is the L9076 for a high traffic school or institutional door?
It is a heavy duty commercial mortise lock, ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 for both operational and security, with a case of cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. The security blocking hub prevents picking by removing the levers, and the locking lever bushing means no exposed screws on the inside levers.
23) Does this Schlage mortise lock meet Buy American requirements for a government project?
Yes, the L Series meets the Buy American Act. It also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings, and is certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 for security and operational. The lock is catalogued to the F06 ANSI function designation.
24) If I only need a non-keyed lever on a classroom corridor door, is there a simpler mortise lock than the L9076?
Yes. The L9076 is keyed with a single cylinder for classroom holdback control. Where no key control is needed, the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose and 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors, and the 3810E is the same passage lock with escutcheon. The Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed, also 2-3/4 inch backset. All three share the 2-3/4 inch backset the L9076 uses.
25) Which mortise lock do I use for a dormitory or corridor door rather than a classroom?
For dormitory openings the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. The L9076 is a non-deadbolt classroom holdback function, keyed single cylinder, Grade 1 heavy duty. If the opening needs a deadbolt for occupant privacy, the 7925 covers that; if it needs key control of the outside lever with free inside egress, the L9076 does.
26) I need electrified access control on a mortise classroom door - what replaces a mechanical L9076?
The L9076 is non-electronic. For electrified mortise locking, the Command Access ML190 is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation and 24VDC power in storeroom function, and the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation. The BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override. Function differs from classroom on these, so confirm the locking behavior your opening needs.
