Schlage L9076P 12B 626 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Schlage L9076 classroom holdback lock on a fire rated door?
No. The Schlage L9000 mortise line is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, but the L9076 and L9077 are specifically excluded from that listing. The holdback feature holds the latchbolt retracted, which is why it cannot go on a labeled opening. If the door is fire rated, use a standard classroom function instead, such as the Cal-Royal NM8070 Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset or the Corbin Russwin ML2003 Grade 1 classroom lockset for a non-holdback classroom lock.
2) What does the holdback feature on the L9076 actually do?
It lets you hold the latchbolt retracted so the door pushes open freely from either side, which is how you leave a classroom or corridor door in a passage state during the day. You activate it by turning the inside lever and rotating the key a full 360 degrees. Normal operation is classroom function: the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key only, the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt for immediate egress, and the auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed.
3) Will the Schlage L9076 fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
That is exactly what it is built for. Door thickness is 1-3/4 inches and the backset is 2-3/4 inches, the standard commercial mortise backset. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch and the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches, so the door needs a standard L Series mortise pocket. Thicker doors are handled through trim options: the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch.
4) Do I have to specify handing when ordering an L9076 mortise lock?
Yes, it ships handed. You order left hand or right hand, and the lever, rose and finish are the same on both sides of the door with matching latch and strike. Get the hand wrong and the lever return and key rotation will be on the wrong face, so confirm the swing from the outside of the door before you place the order.
5) Does the L9076 come with a cylinder, or do I order it less core for my own keyway?
Both routes are available. The standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in C keyway, and that is the P option. If you key your own building you can take J for Schlage FSIC less core, B for SFIC less prep core, H for a 7-pin SFIC prep with construction core, or L for less conventional cylinder. Note the security grade shifts with the cylinder: the latch is Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security as standard, Grade 2 security with FSIC interchangeable cores and Grade 3 security with SFIC cores, while operational stays Grade 1 either way.
6) I need classroom security lockdown from inside the room. Is this the right lock?
No. The L9076 is keyed from the outside only, single cylinder, so a teacher cannot secure the outside lever from inside the room without stepping into the corridor with a key. For inside lockdown, look at an intruder or classroom security function instead: the BEST 45HCA heavy duty mortise lockbody with intruder function, the Marks USA LA318GJ classroom security indicator mortise lockset, or the TownSteel FME-4000 electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset. The L9076 is for rooms where the holdback and key-outside control is what you want.
7) What is a cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage L9076 classroom mortise lock?
The Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, also for 1-3/4 inch doors. All three are keyed classroom-function mortise locks at Grade 1 on a 1-3/4 inch door. The L9076 differs in that it adds the holdback feature, where turning the inside lever and rotating the key 360 degrees holds the latchbolt retracted; the ML2003 and NM8070 are catalogued as standard classroom function.
8) Can I use the L9076 on a fire-rated door, and what should I specify if not?
The L9076 and L9077 are the exceptions to the L Series UL listing for 3-hour fire doors, so it is not the choice where a fire label governs. For a fire-rated opening, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise lock carrying a fire rating, and the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 mortise lock rated 3 hours. Confirm the function you need on those, since the MA101 is passage function.
9) We want to get rid of keys on classroom doors - what replaces the L9076?
The L9076 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed to a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard. Keypad alternatives in classroom function include the Alarm Lock DL2700CR Trilogy T2 and the DL3500CR with 300 user codes, both Grade 1 classroom mortise locks for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. For credential-based access, the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors. Note the door thickness difference on the Alarm Lock units against the L9076's 1-3/4 inch.
10) The door needs to lock behind itself and stay locked - is the L9076 or a storeroom lock correct?
On the L9076 the latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side unless the outside lever is locked by key, so the outside lever is free until someone keys it. For an opening that should always require a key outside, the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors with an interchangeable core option.
11) Is a strike included with the Schlage L9076, and will it drop into an existing ANSI frame prep?
A 10-072 strike comes with it: 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, 1-3/16 inch lip, with box. That is the standard square-corner mortise strike footprint, so it lands in a frame already prepped for an L Series or comparable mortise lock. If your frame has radius-corner prep, you will need the matching curved-corner strike instead of the one supplied.
12) What finishes and lever trim can I get so the classroom locks match the rest of my building?
The 12 lever design is what this configuration uses, on your choice of A or B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon, or N wrought escutcheon. Twelve finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. L Series levers also suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so the corridor and stair doors can match the classrooms.
13) Is the L9076 heavy duty enough for a school corridor, and is it ADA compliant?
It is a commercial heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lock, with the L9000 line tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 for Grade 1 security and operational. The lock case body is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. Schlage states L Series meets ADA requirements, and levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. There is also a security blocking hub that prevents picking by pulling the levers.
14) What are the alternatives to the Schlage L9076 if I want a keypad or credential classroom lock instead of keys?
Several electronic classroom mortise locks cover the same opening. The Alarm Lock DL2700CR and DL3500CR Trilogy keypad locks are Grade 1 classroom function for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. The TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID, on 1-3/4 inch doors. The L9076 itself is purely mechanical, no electronics, so if you want audit trail or credentials you are changing products rather than adding an option.
15) Is there a deadbolt in the L9076, and what if I need one on a classroom door?
No deadbolt. The L9076 is a latchbolt-only classroom holdback function, so the security comes from the auxiliary-deadlocked latchbolt rather than a bolt throw. If the opening needs a deadbolt, the Sargent 7925 dormitory exit function mortise lock includes a single cylinder deadbolt, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt, and the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset if you want a separate bolt above the lock.
16) Is the Sargent 4874 or Kaba Ilco 185 a substitute for the L9076?
No. The L9076 is a single cylinder keyed classroom lock with lever trim and a 2-3/4 inch backset latch. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a deadbolt function mortise lock; neither carries a latchbolt and lever for daily passage, so they would supplement rather than replace a classroom lockset.
17) Do I need to specify handing like the L9076 requires, or is there a reversible mortise lock?
The L9076 is a handed lock and is ordered left hand or right hand. If you would rather stock one lock body for either swing, the BEST 45H Series heavy duty mortise lock body is field reversible in public entrance function, and the Falcon MA101 Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock is also field reversible. Both are different functions from the classroom holdback arrangement of the L9076.
18) Will a Baldwin 6310 mortise lock drop into the same prep as the Schlage L9076?
Plan on a different prep. The L9076 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case. The Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body is a 2-1/2 inch backset, as is the 6301 entry/apartment body, so the cylinder and lever centerlines fall at a different distance from the door edge.
19) What should I use on the non-keyed doors in the same corridor as our L9076 classroom doors?
For openings that do not need keying, the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose on a 2-3/4 inch backset and the 3810E is the same with escutcheon, both for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors; the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset. They share the 2-3/4 inch backset the L9076 uses, which keeps the door machining consistent across the run.
20) Is the Schlage CO-100 mortise lock an electronic version of the L9076?
Not in function. The CO-100 standalone electronic mortise lock listed with a keypad reader is Grade 1 heavy duty on a 1-3/4 inch door but is privacy function. The L9076 is a keyed classroom holdback lock, also Grade 1 heavy duty on a 1-3/4 inch door. For an electronic classroom function, the Alarm Lock DL3500CR is Grade 1 classroom.
21) We need an anti-ligature mortise lock for a behavioral health wing - is the L9076 suitable?
The L9076 uses a 12 lever design and is a standard commercial classroom lock. For ligature resistant openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless arch trim, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 ligature resistant, ADA compliant hospital passage push/pull paddleset in satin stainless steel.
22) Our access control spec needs a remotely released mortise lock rather than a keyed classroom lock - what fits?
The L9076 is a non-electronic mechanical lock. For an electrically controlled mortise lock, the Command Access ML190 is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock in storeroom function with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC, and the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V or 24V.
23) Can I order the L9076 to take our existing small format interchangeable cores instead of a Schlage cylinder?
Yes. The L9076 ships standard with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, and cylinder prep options include SFIC less core, 7-pin SFIC prep with construction core, Schlage FSIC less core, and less conventional cylinder. Among comparable mortise locksets, the Cal-Royal NM8080 storeroom lockset is offered with an interchangeable core option as well.
