Schlage L9076P 06B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Schlage L9076 classroom holdback mortise lock on a fire rated door?
No. The L9000 Series mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors with the exception of the L9076 and L9077, so the holdback function is not a fire door lock. The holdback feature keeps the latchbolt retracted, which is why it is excluded. If you need a keyed classroom lock on a labeled opening, go with a standard classroom function L9000 lock rather than the L9076.
2) What does the holdback feature on the Schlage L9076 actually do?
Holdback keeps the latchbolt held back so the door swings free like a passage door. You turn the inside lever and rotate the key a full 360 degrees to set it. The rest of the time it works as a classroom lock: the lever retracts the latch from either side unless the outside lever is keyed off, and when locked the latch is retracted by key outside or by the inside lever. The inside lever is always free for egress.
3) What door thickness and backset does the Schlage L9076 mortise lock require?
Standard build is a 2-3/4 inch backset on a 1-3/4 inch thick door. The mortise pocket has to take a case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, with a 1-1/4 x 8 inch armor front. If your doors are thicker, the L Series does offer other door thickness options, and the escutcheon trims cover a wider range: the L cast/forged escutcheon suits 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch.
4) Is the Schlage L9076 handed, and do I need to specify hand when ordering?
Yes, it is a handed lock, so you need to give the hand of the opening when you order. Determine it from the outside of the door: which side the hinges are on and which way the door swings.
5) What cylinder options can I get on the Schlage L9076, and can I order it less cylinder?
Seven cylinder choices: conventional 6-pin in the C keyway (the standard build), less conventional cylinder, Schlage FSIC less core, FSIC with core in S123 keyway, FSIC with construction core, SFIC less prep core, and 7-pin SFIC prep with construction core. Ordering less core or less cylinder is normal when a locksmith is keying the building into an existing system. Keying can be ordered keyed different or keyed alike across multiple locks. One note for spec writers: the lock is A156.13 Grade 1 security with a conventional cylinder, Grade 2 with FSIC, and Grade 3 with SFIC.
6) What is a mechanical equivalent to the Schlage L9076 classroom mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The Schlage L9076 is a Grade 1 classroom-function mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 inch doors. Two mechanical peers cover the same classroom function at Grade 1 on 1-3/4 inch doors: the Corbin Russwin ML2003 in the ML2000 Series and the Cal-Royal NM8070, which includes an auxiliary deadlatch. Both are keyed classroom mortise locksets, so the decision usually comes down to keyway and cylinder program rather than function.
7) I need a classroom mortise lock on a fire-rated opening - what should I use instead of the L9076?
The L9076 classroom holdback function is specifically excluded from the L Series UL 3-hour fire door listing. For a fire-rated classroom opening, the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 mortise lock carrying a 3-hour fire rating, and within the L Series a non-holdback classroom function retains the 3-hour listing. If you want a mechanical classroom lock on a rated door, specify a function other than L9076 or L9077.
8) What are the keypad or credential alternatives to a keyed L9076 classroom mortise lock?
The L9076 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. If you want coded or credential access on a classroom opening instead of keys, the Alarm Lock DL3500CR is a Grade 1 classroom-function electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes, the DL2700CR is a classroom-function keypad mortise lock with a weatherproof design, and the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with RFID. All three are classroom function like the L9076.
9) My door is 1-5/8 inch thick - is the L9076 still the right classroom mortise lock?
The L9076 lock body is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors, though the L and N escutcheon options extend the trim range on thicker doors. For a thinner door, the Alarm Lock DL2700CR and DL3500CR classroom-function mortise locks are both rated for 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch door thickness.
10) For a classroom that needs lockdown from inside, how does the L9076 compare to an intruder-function lock?
The L9076 locks the outside lever by key from the outside and always leaves the inside lever free for immediate egress. If you want the lockdown initiated at the door, the BEST 45HCAINL is a heavy duty mortise lockbody with intruder function, and the TownSteel FME-4000 is a Grade 1 electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both change where the lockdown is commanded from.
11) Will the L9076 latch into the strike already in my frame?
It ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, box type, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your existing frame already has an ANSI square corner mortise strike prep of that size, the lock drops in. Round corner or T-strike preps will need the frame modified or a different strike ordered.
12) Does the Schlage L9076 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt. It is a single cylinder, latchbolt-only classroom function with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. If the spec calls for a deadbolt on a mortise lock, look at a deadbolt function instead, such as the Sargent 4874 double cylinder mortise deadbolt.
13) What other Grade 1 classroom mortise locks are there if the L9076 is not the right fit?
For a mechanical Grade 1 classroom mortise lock on a 1-3/4 inch door, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 and the Cal-Royal NM8070 with auxiliary deadlatch are both direct-function alternatives. If the school wants keypad access instead of a key, the Alarm Lock DL3500CR Trilogy is a Grade 1 electronic classroom mortise lock for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, and the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 RFID classroom mortise lockset. None of those carry the L9076 holdback feature.
14) Will the 06 lever on the L9076 match the rest of my building's Schlage hardware?
The 06 lever is one of the standard L Series designs, and L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices as well as the related LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so you can carry one lever design across mortise locks and exit device trim. Twelve finishes are offered, from 605 bright brass through 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless and 622 matte black. Rose and escutcheon choices are A and B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon, and N wrought escutcheon.
15) What is the difference between the L9076 classroom holdback lock and a storeroom mortise lock like the Accentra 8805FL?
The L9076 is classroom function: the latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side unless the outside lever is locked by key, and it adds a holdback feature activated by turning the inside lever and rotating the key 360 degrees. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom function mortise lock in the 8800 Series, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset. Storeroom keeps the outside lever always locked with entry by key only, so it will not give you the unlocked-classroom or held-open condition.
16) If the opening does not need to be keyed, is there a simpler mortise lock than the L9076?
The L9076 is a keyed single-cylinder lock. If the door only needs free operation or non-keyed control, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon that is non-keyed on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Both drop the cylinder and the classroom locking sequence.
17) Can I use a Sargent 7925 or 4874 in place of the L9076?
Not for the same opening. The L9076 is a classroom holdback function with no deadbolt and a single cylinder. The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty corridor/dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, and the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset with no lever trim at all. Those are deadbolt-bearing functions, not a substitute for a classroom latch function.
18) What mortise lock should I use for a behavioral health or anti-ligature classroom opening instead of a standard 06 lever?
The L9076 uses the 06 lever design, and the L Series does offer ligature resistant trim options. If you want a purpose-built anti-ligature mortise lockset, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset and the MRX-A-01 uses satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim, both passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors. Note those are passage, not the keyed classroom control the L9076 provides.
19) Is the Schlage L9076 an electronic or access control lock?
No, it is purely mechanical, key operated. If you want the same mortise footprint with credentials, Schlage Electronics offers the CO-100 standalone keypad mortise lock and the ENGAGE Series LEMD wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader.
20) What is the L9076 lock case made of?
Cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating on the case, which is the standard corrosion protection for a heavy duty commercial mortise body sitting inside a door.
