Schlage L9076P 02B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Schlage L9076 classroom holdback mortise lock on a fire rated door?
No. The Schlage L Series is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors with the exception of the L9076 and L9077, so the classroom holdback function is not the one to put on a fire rated opening. If the opening is fire rated, use a standard classroom function L Series lock instead. For a classroom-function Grade 1 mortise on a 1-3/4 inch door from another brand, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 and the Cal-Royal NM8070 are both classroom mortise locksets we carry.
2) What does the holdback feature on the L9076 actually do?
Holdback keeps the latchbolt retracted so the door stays free-swinging, which is how a classroom or corridor door gets held open for passing periods without a separate hold-open. You activate it by turning the inside lever and rotating the key a full 360 degrees. Outside of that, the latchbolt is retracted by either lever unless the outside lever is locked by key, and when locked the key outside or the inside lever retracts it. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
3) Do I have to order a cylinder with the Schlage L9076, or can I use my own core?
You pick the cylinder path when you order. Options are a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, less conventional cylinder, Schlage FSIC less core, or SFIC less prep core. The standard build is the conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. If you already key your building on interchangeable cores, take the FSIC or SFIC option and drop your own cores in. Note the security grading shifts with the core type: Grade 1 security with the conventional cylinder, Grade 2 with FSIC, Grade 3 with SFIC.
4) I want a classroom lock that can be locked from inside the room during a lockdown. Is the L9076 it?
No. The L9076 is a key-in-the-corridor classroom function with holdback: the outside lever is locked by key from the outside only. Nobody can secure it from inside the classroom without stepping into the hall. If lockdown from inside the room is the requirement, look at an intruder or classroom security function instead, such as the BEST 45HCA intruder function mortise lock body, the Marks USA LA318GJ classroom security indicator mortise lockset, or the TownSteel FME-4000 electronic intruder classroom mortise lockset.
5) I need a deadbolt on the classroom door - does the Schlage L9076 include one?
No. The L9076 is a non-deadbolt classroom holdback function; its auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed, but there is no separate deadbolt. If a deadbolt is required, the Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty corridor/dormitory mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset matching the L9076 backset, and the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors.
6) I need a classroom lock with a keypad instead of a key - what should I use in place of the Schlage L9076?
The L9076 is a mechanical, non-electronic keyed lock using a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. If credential entry is wanted instead, Grade 1 classroom-function electronic mortise options include the Alarm Lock DL3500CR Trilogy with 300 user codes, the Alarm Lock DL2700CR Trilogy T2 with weatherproof design, and the TownSteel FME-2000 Series with RFID technology. The Alarm Lock units are listed for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, while the TownSteel FME-2000 is listed for 1-3/4 inch doors.
7) What is a mechanical Grade 1 classroom mortise lock equivalent to the Schlage L9076 from another manufacturer?
The Schlage L9076 is a Grade 1 classroom-function mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 inch doors. Two mechanical peers cover the same classroom function at Grade 1: the Corbin Russwin ML2003 from the ML2000 Series, listed for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, also listed for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both are classroom function, so key-outside control of the outside lever carries over; the L9076 adds the holdback feature, where turning the inside lever and rotating the key 360 degrees holds the latchbolt back.
8) What strike comes with the L9076 and will it work in my existing frame prep?
The standard strike is the Schlage 10-072, a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box. That is the common ANSI-size mortise strike prep, so it drops into most hollow metal frames already cut for a mortise lock. If your frame has a curved corner cutout or a different lip length, you will want to specify a different strike.
9) Can I key several L9076 locks alike across a building?
Yes. Keying is chosen at order: keyed different (the standard), keyed alike for multiple locks, or no keying at all if you are taking a less-cylinder option and handling keys yourself. There is also a free text field for special cylinder or keying requirements if you are tying these into an existing master system.
10) Which rose or escutcheon should I pick for the Schlage L9076 with an 02 lever?
Four trim choices: A wrought rose, B wrought rose, L cast or forged escutcheon, and N wrought escutcheon. The L escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. Since the lock itself is a 1-3/4 inch door product, any of them work dimensionally; the choice is appearance and how much of the door face you want covered. Same lever, rose and finish go on both sides.
11) What finishes does the Schlage L9076 come in for matching existing building hardware?
Twelve finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, and 643E aged bronze. 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the usual institutional standards. The 02 lever also suites with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so a mixed opening can be kept visually consistent.
12) Is the L9076 tough enough for a school corridor, and does it meet ADA?
It is a heavy duty commercial mortise lock, Grade 1 and ANSI/BHMA function F06, with a case in cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. Schlage states the L Series meets ADA requirements, and all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed, which is what keeps a corridor door from being loided.
13) Does the L9076 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt. It is a latchbolt-only classroom holdback function with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. If the opening needs a bolt, a dormitory or entry function with a deadbolt is the right direction, such as the Sargent 7925 Grade 1 dormitory exit function mortise lock with single cylinder deadbolt, or a separate Sargent 4874 double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
14) What is the difference between the Schlage L9076 classroom lock and a storeroom mortise lock?
On the L9076 classroom function the outside lever can be left unlocked so either lever retracts the latch, and it is locked or unlocked by key; the inside lever is always free for egress. A storeroom function keeps the outside lever fixed at all times and the key retracts the latch on every entry. Storeroom peers include the Accentra 8805FL Grade 1 from the 8800 Series with the Arcadia lever and the Cal-Royal NM8080 Grade 1 with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors. Choose storeroom for a door that must never be left unsecured, classroom for a room that is opened for occupancy.
15) Can I use a Schlage L9076 on an office or conference room door instead of a keyed office function lock?
The L9076 is a keyed single-cylinder classroom lock, which controls the outside lever by key only. For an office door where staff want to secure from inside without a key, the Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset, non-keyed, listed for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors. The L9076 shares the 2-3/4 inch backset with the Hager unit.
16) My door is thinner than 1-3/4 inches - what mortise lock works if the Schlage L9076 does not?
The L9076 is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors, though the L cast/forged escutcheon option covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors. Peers listed for thinner or wider ranges include the Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise lock body with a 2-1/2 inch backset for 1-3/8 inch doors and over, and the Alarm Lock DL3500CR electronic classroom lock for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. Note the Baldwin body uses a 2-1/2 inch backset rather than the 2-3/4 inch backset of the L9076, so the door prep differs.
17) For a behavioral health room, can I specify the Schlage L9076 or do I need ligature resistant trim?
The L9076 uses the 02 lever design; ligature resistant trim is offered within the L Series as the Gold Standard option. If a purpose-built anti-ligature lockset is preferred, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, the MRX-A-01 is the arch trim passage version in satin stainless steel, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. Those three are passage function, where the L9076 is keyed classroom.
18) Will a Schlage CO-100 or LE Series electronic mortise lock drop into the same opening as an L9076?
Both are mortise locks for 1-3/4 inch doors, but the function is different. The L9076 is a Grade 1 keyed classroom holdback lock. The Schlage CO-100-MS-40-KP is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic mortise lock in privacy function with a keypad reader, and the Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions with a 3 hour fire rating. Neither is a classroom-function replacement for the L9076.
19) I need access control on the classroom door tied to a card system - what replaces the Schlage L9076?
The L9076 is mechanical and keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. Credential-based mortise peers include the Dormakaba LX-I-M002 Saffire electronic RFID mortise lockset with BLE mobile access at BHMA Grade 2, the Dormakaba E-Plex E5086 Grade 1 entry/egress pushbutton and card lock in a back-to-back mortise configuration, and the Accentra NTM623-NR nexTouch Generation 3 Grade 1 mortise lock with capacitive touchscreen keypad and cylinder override. The NTM623-NR keeps a key override, which is closest in habit to the keyed operation of the L9076.
20) Is an electrified mortise lock available as an alternative to the mechanical Schlage L9076 for remote release?
The L9076 itself is non-electronic. Within the L Series, electrified locks auto detect 12V/24V DC with customer-selectable EL/EU. Comparable electrified mortise bodies include the Command Access ML190 Series motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation and 24VDC power in storeroom function, and the BEST 45HW Series heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation.
