1) Will the Schlage L9077 classroom security lock work on a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
That is exactly what it is built for. The L9077 mortise lock is a 2-3/4 inch backset lock for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, so the door needs a standard ANSI mortise pocket cut to that case. The armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches. If your doors are thinner or thicker than 1-3/4 inches, this configuration is not the one to order.
2) Do I need to specify handing when ordering a Schlage L9077 mortise lock?
The lock body is field reversible, so handing is not part of the order for most trims. The one exception is the 12 lever design, which does need a right hand or left hand call-out. Every other lever style runs either hand out of the box.

Standard is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, and because the function is double cylinder it takes two of them, one each side. 4) Is a standard classroom mortise lock the same thing as the Schlage L9077?
No. The L9077 is a classroom security function: the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key from either side of the door, which is why it is a double cylinder keyed lock.
