Schlage L9080P 03B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does storeroom function mean on a Schlage L9080, and is it the right lock for a mechanical or supply room?
Storeroom function keeps the outside lever permanently locked. Key from the corridor side retracts the latchbolt to get in; the inside lever is always free, so anyone inside can leave without a key or a thumbturn. There is no way to leave the outside unlocked, which is exactly what you want on a storeroom, electrical closet, or IT room where the door must never be left in a passage state. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door closes, so it cannot be loided. If you need staff to be able to leave the door unlocked during the day, storeroom is the wrong function.
2) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the Schlage L9080?
Yes, handing matters. The L9080 is a handed lock, so you need to know whether the opening is left hand, right hand, left hand reverse, or right hand reverse before you order. Stand outside the door: the side the hinges are on gives you the hand, and whether the door swings toward or away from you gives you the reverse. Get this wrong and the lever ends up upside down on the door.
3) What cylinder options come with the Schlage L9080, and can I get it less cylinder for my own keying?
Seven cylinder configurations are orderable. P is the standard conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway. L is less conventional cylinder if your locksmith is supplying it. For interchangeable core shops: J is Schlage FSIC less core, R is FSIC with a core in the S123 keyway, T is FSIC with a construction core, B is SFIC less prep core, and H is 7-pin SFIC prep with a construction core. Note the security implication if you go IC: with FSIC cores the lock is rated Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with SFIC cores Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security, versus full Grade 1 on both counts with the conventional cylinder.
4) Can I get a batch of Schlage L9080 locks keyed alike for one building?
Keying is a required selection on the L9080. Keyed different is the standard, keyed alike puts a group of locks on one key for a run of storerooms or a single tenant space, and there is a no-cylinder selection when you are ordering less cylinder and keying them yourself. If you need the locks pinned into an existing masterkey system or a specific keyway, that goes in the special cylinder and keying requirements field on the order.
5) Will the Schlage L9080 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The lock ships with a 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner with a box and a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame carries a square corner ANSI strike of that size you are prepping nothing new; if the existing cutout is radius corner or a different length, plan on reworking the frame or ordering a different strike. The armor front on the lock is 1-1/4 x 8 inches, so the edge prep has to match that too.
6) Is the Schlage L9080 fire rated for a 3 hour door?
UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol are stamped on the latch front, which is what an inspector looks for. The lock is also certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, carries the F07 function designation, and meets ADA requirements and the Buy American Act.
7) The door is 1-5/8 inch thick - the L9080 will not fit, so what mortise lock will?
The L9080 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. For thinner doors, the Alarm Lock Trilogy family covers 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inches: the DL2700CR is a Grade 1 classroom function electronic mortise lock with weatherproof design, the DL3500CR is a Grade 1 classroom electronic mortise lock with 300 user codes, and the DL4500 is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and privacy keypad. On the other side of the range, the Hager 3810E and 3810S passage mortise locks cover 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inches. On the L9080 itself, the L cast/forged escutcheon is offered for 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon for 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Schlage L9080 storeroom mortise lock?
The Accentra 8805FL from the 8800 Series is the nearest match: it is a Grade 1 storeroom-function mortise lock, the same grade and function as the L9080, and comes with the Arcadia lever. The Cal-Royal NM8080 is a second Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset, listed for 1-3/4 inch doors, which matches the door thickness the L9080 is built for. Function behavior is the same idea in all three: key outside, always-free lever inside. Where they differ is trim and cylinder ecosystem - the L9080 ships standard with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder and can be ordered in SFIC or Schlage FSIC prep, while the NM8080 is described with an interchangeable core option.
9) What mortise lock has a deadbolt if the L9080 does not?
The L9080 is a non-deadbolt storeroom function - the latchbolt is deadlocked by an auxiliary latch when the door closes, but there is no separate throw bolt. For a real deadbolt in a mortise case, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, the same backset dimension the L9080 uses. The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty corridor/dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, which combines a latch and a deadbolt in one case. Kaba Ilco 185 Series mortise locks are a deadbolt function supplied with no handing, where the L9080 is a handed lock.
10) Which mortise locks look like a storeroom lock but will not secure the door?
Several mortise locksets in the same family are passage or dummy function and hold nothing closed. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock, fire rated and field reversible - it retracts the latch from either side at all times, with no key. Hager 3810E and 3810S are Grade 1 passage mortise locks on a 2-3/4 inch backset, the escutcheon and rose versions respectively, for doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inches. TownSteel MRX-L-01 and MRX-A-01 are Grade 1 heavy duty passage mortise locksets in anti-ligature lever and arch trim. Emtek's 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are dummy function - trim only, no operating latch. The L9080 by contrast is keyed, single cylinder, with the outside lever always inoperable until the key turns.
11) What is the electrified equivalent of a storeroom mortise lock for an access control tie-in?
The L9080 is a mechanical lock with no electrical connection. For a wired storeroom-function mortise lock, the Command Access ML190 Series is a heavy-duty motorized mortise lock in storeroom function with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC - the same function as the L9080, with the outside lever released by the access control system instead of only by key. The BEST 45HW Series is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V or 24V. For a wireless path, the Dormakaba E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 entry/egress pushbutton and card mortise lock in a back to back configuration.
12) Should I use a mortise lock like the Schlage L9080 or a cylindrical lock on a high-traffic storeroom door?
A mortise lock goes into a pocket machined into the door edge, here a 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch case in cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. That larger body is why mortise is the heavy duty choice for doors that get cycled hard all day, and it is what lets one lock case support many functions and take a full size cylinder. The trade-off is the prep: if your doors are already bored for a cylindrical lock, retrofitting to mortise means machining the door edge. On an existing mortise prep with a 2-3/4 inch backset, the L9080 drops in.
13) What finishes does the Schlage L9080 come in so I can match the other doors in my building?
Twelve finishes are orderable: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, and 643E aged bronze. 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the two you will see most often on commercial openings. The same lever, rose and finish are supplied for both sides of the door with a coordinating latch and strike, so both faces match without a separate order.
14) Will the Schlage L9080 lever match my Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage trim?
All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT. So a building running Von Duprin on the stairwells and exits can carry the same 03 lever design onto storeroom doors and have the trim read as one family. The L Series also suites across tubular, exit device and multipoint locks.
15) What is a comparable Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock if I am not standardized on Schlage?
Two direct Grade 1 storeroom mortise equivalents we carry: the Accentra 8805FL from the 8800 Series with the Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080, which lists a 1-3/4 inch door thickness like the L9080 and offers an interchangeable core option. If your spec calls for a different function on the same style of opening, the Cal-Royal line runs parallel with the NM8050 office/entrance, the NM8070 classroom, and the NM8440 privacy with deadbolt, all Grade 1 at 1-3/4 inch.
16) I need keypad or credential access on a storeroom door instead of a key. What replaces the Schlage L9080?
The L9080 is a mechanical lock with no electronics, so key control is the only credential. For an electronic mortise on the same kind of opening, we carry the Schlage CO-100 standalone with keypad reader (Grade 1, 1-3/4 inch door), the Schlage Electronics LEMD ENGAGE wireless mortise with a 125kHz proximity reader (Grade 1, 3 hour fire rating), the TownSteel FME-2000 Grade 1 RFID mortise at 1-3/4 inch, and the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 pushbutton keyless mortise. If you want the L Series case with electrified control rather than a keypad, the L Series electrified functions auto detect 12V/24V DC, are customer-selectable EL/EU, and offer RX, DPS, latchbolt and deadbolt monitoring.
17) Does the Schlage L9080 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt on the L9080. It is a non-deadbolt storeroom function: security comes from the latchbolt plus the auxiliary latch that deadlocks it when the door closes, with a single cylinder on the outside. If the opening needs a thrown bolt, look at a deadbolt-carrying option instead, such as the Sargent 4874 double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, or the Cal-Royal NM8440 Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt at 1-3/4 inch. L Series deadbolt functions include an anti-saw pin in the bolt.
18) Do I order a rose or an escutcheon with the Schlage L9080, and does it change what doors it fits?
Four trim choices, and one of them does change your door range. A and B are wrought roses. L is a cast or forged escutcheon rated for 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors. N is a wrought escutcheon for 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. Roses give a smaller footprint on the face; escutcheons cover more of the door, which helps when you are covering up an old prep or a previous trim outline. A locking lever bushing keeps exposed screws off the inside levers whichever trim you pick.
19) Which mortise lock should I use for an office or entrance door instead of a storeroom function?
A storeroom lock like the L9080 has no way to leave the outside lever unlocked, which office doors normally need. The Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock, non-keyed, with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inches - the same 2-3/4 inch backset the L9080 uses, so the case cutout centerline is consistent. Baldwin's 6301 is an entry/apartment mortise lock body on a 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 inch and over, in knob by knob or the 6301LS lever by lever version.
20) Is there a keyless or credential-based mortise lock that does the same job as a keyed storeroom lock?
The L9080 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed to a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. If the goal is to drop keys and manage access by code or credential on the same mortise prep, the Accentra nexTouch NTM623-NR is a Grade 1 nexTouch Generation 3 mortise lock with a capacitive touchscreen keypad, no deadbolt, with cylinder override - the cylinder override keeps a mechanical key path for the same reason a storeroom lock has one. The BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override, and the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating, mobile enabled, in Greenwich trim, right hand. The TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 RFID mortise lockset in classroom function for 1-3/4 inch doors.
21) I only need the mortise lock body, not a complete keyed lockset - what are the options?
The L9080 is supplied as a complete keyed lockset with the 03 lever, matching rose or escutcheon, latch and the 10-072 square corner box strike with 1-3/16 inch lip. If the job calls for a lock body alone, the BEST 45H Series is a heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function with field reversible operation, and the 45HCA Series is a heavy duty mortise lockbody in intruder function. Baldwin's 6310 is an entry/storeroom mortise lock body on a 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/8 inch and over, with 6310190RRLS being the right hand reverse lever by lever build. Note the backset difference: the L9080 case is cut for 2-3/4 inch.
22) What mortise lock suits a behavioral health or patient room where a standard lever is a ligature risk?
A conventional 03 lever like the one on the L9080 projects from the door face. Where that is a concern, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel, passage function, for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function in satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset, ligature resistant and ADA compliant, in satin stainless steel. All three are passage function rather than the keyed storeroom function of the L9080, so they do not secure the opening.
23) Which mortise lock covers a restroom or bedroom where the L9080 storeroom function is wrong?
Storeroom function locks the outside lever permanently and needs a key, which is not what a restroom or bedroom door wants. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy/bed/bath mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy/bed/bath mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches. For a keypad privacy lock, the Schlage CO-100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty standalone electronic mortise lock in privacy function with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors, matching the L9080 door thickness.
24) For a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock, what actually differs between the Schlage L9080 and the Cal-Royal NM8080?
Both are Grade 1 mortise locksets in storeroom function for 1-3/4 inch doors. The NM8080 is heavy duty and described with an interchangeable core option. The L9080 is heavy duty as well, F07 under ANSI/BHMA, with a 2-3/4 inch backset, a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case, a CRS body with zinc dichromate plating, and a cylinder axis that spans conventional 6-pin C keyway, Schlage FSIC with or without core, SFIC 7-pin prep, and less-cylinder builds. It is also handed, and comes in twelve finishes from 605 bright brass through 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze, with A or B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon or N wrought escutcheon.
25) Can I upgrade the Schlage L9080 to a high security cylinder later?
A UL437 listed locking cylinder is available on the L Series, specified as a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder. If key control is the reason you are buying, ordering the lock less conventional cylinder (option L) or less core (J or B) lets your locksmith supply the restricted cylinder at install. The standard build otherwise ships a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway.
26) Is the Schlage L9080 secure against someone pulling the lever off the door?
A security blocking hub prevents picking the lock by removing the levers, which is the common attack on a lever mortise. The lock exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 security and operational standards, and it is also listed to ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 for forced entry resistance. Body material is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating.
