Schlage L9080P 02B 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9080 storeroom mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
1-3/4 inches is the door thickness the L9080 is built for as standard, with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch mortise case pocket. Thicker doors are not a standard build, but the trim choice does shift the range: the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch. Measure the door and the existing mortise pocket before you order, because a 2-3/8 inch backset prep will not take this lock.
2) What does storeroom function actually do on a Schlage L9080, and is the outside lever ever unlocked?
Outside lever stays locked at all times on the L9080. A key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt; there is no way to leave the outside lever free, so nobody props the room open by flipping a button. Inside lever always retracts the latch for immediate egress, and an auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door closes so it cannot be shimmed. This is the function you want on mechanical rooms, IT closets, stockrooms, and anywhere the door must stay secure behind everyone who walks out. If you need the outside lever to be lockable and unlockable by key or thumbturn instead, storeroom is the wrong function.
3) Is the Schlage L9080 handed, and do I have to specify the hand when I order?
Handing matters here. The L9080 is a handed lock, so you need to know whether the opening is left hand, left hand reverse, right hand, or right hand reverse before ordering. Stand outside the door: the side the hinges are on gives you left or right, and a door that swings out toward you is a reverse hand. Getting it wrong on a mortise lock means the lever throws the wrong way and the latch bevel faces the wrong direction.
4) Does the Schlage L9080 come with a cylinder, or do I order the key cylinder separately?
Depends which cylinder option you pick, and there are four. P gives you the lock with a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, ready to key. L is less conventional cylinder, so you supply your own. J is prepped for Schlage full size interchangeable core with no core supplied. B is prepped for small format interchangeable core, less core. If your building already runs an SFIC master key system, order B and drop your own cores in. If you have no system in place, P is the straightforward pick. Keying is a separate choice on top of that: keyed different, keyed alike across multiple locks, or none if you went less cylinder.
5) Can I get several Schlage L9080 locks keyed alike so one key opens all of them?
Yes, keyed alike is an ordering option on the L9080, and it is the usual choice when a property manager wants one key across a run of storerooms. Keyed different is the standard if each door needs its own key. There is also a free text field for special cylinder or keying requirements, which is where you note an existing keyway, a master key system, or a bitting to key to. If you are running interchangeable cores, order the B or J cylinder option and key your own cores instead.
6) Is the Schlage L9080 rated for a fire door?
UL listed for a 3-hour fire door, and the L9000 series is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 for both security and operational. The UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet; the letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how an inspector confirms it on site. Note the grade shifts if you go interchangeable core: with FSIC cores it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with SFIC cores Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security. The lock also meets ADA requirements and the Buy American Act.
7) What strike comes with the Schlage L9080, and will it drop into my existing frame cutout?
The standard strike is the 10-072, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches with square corners, a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box behind it. That is the common ANSI mortise strike footprint, so if the frame already carries a square corner mortise strike of that size the new one lands in the same cutout. Frames prepped with radius corner strikes will need the corners squared or a different strike ordered. Lip length is the other thing to check: 1-3/16 inches suits a standard frame reveal, and a deeper reveal or an applied stop needs a longer lip so the latch is not catching the edge.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Schlage L9080 storeroom mortise lock?
The Schlage L9080 is a Grade 1 storeroom-function mortise lock in the L Series. The nearest like-for-like from another manufacturer is the Accentra 8805FL, a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with the Arcadia lever. The Cal-Royal NM8080 is also a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset, listed for 1-3/4 inch doors, which matches the L9080 door thickness. All three hold the latchbolt retracted by key outside or lever inside with the outside lever otherwise secured, so any of them serves a storeroom or utility opening that must stay locked from the corridor while allowing free egress.
9) The opening needs a classroom lock, not a storeroom lock - what mortise lock does that?
Storeroom function keeps the outside lever permanently inoperable, so it will not do for a classroom opening where a teacher needs to lock and unlock the outside lever by key. The Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset in the ML2000 Series for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset also listed for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both take the same 1-3/4 inch door as the Schlage L9080, so the door prep decision does not change with the function.
10) Which mortise lock should I use if the door needs an office or entrance function instead of storeroom?
The Schlage L9080 is fixed in storeroom function, so the outside lever cannot be left unlocked for business hours. For an opening where staff want the outside lever free during the day and secured after, the Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset, non-keyed, for doors 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch. The Hager carries the same 2-3/4 inch backset as the L9080, so the mortise pocket location on the drawing stays the same.
11) What replaces a Schlage L9080 when the door has to be opened by a keypad or credential rather than a key?
The Schlage L9080 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock. For an opening that needs code or credential access in the same mortise prep, the Schlage Electronics CO-100 is a Grade 1 standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Accentra NTM623-NR is a nexTouch Generation 3 mortise lock with a capacitive touchscreen keypad and cylinder override with no deadbolt. The TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors. The CO-100 listed here is privacy function, so confirm the function suits the opening before swapping.
12) Can a Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt be used in place of a Schlage L9080?
No. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, a bolt only with no latch and no lever. The Schlage L9080 is a non-deadbolt storeroom lock whose latchbolt is retracted by the inside lever or the outside key, with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. The two share the 2-3/4 inch backset but not the function: the 4874 cannot latch the door or provide lever egress. The Kaba Ilco 185 Series is likewise a deadbolt function mortise lock. If a deadbolt is wanted alongside lever operation, that is a different L Series function, not the L9080.
13) Which mortise lock do I use for a behavioral health or anti-ligature opening instead of a standard lever lock?
A standard 02 lever like the one on the Schlage L9080 presents a graspable projection. For patient-area openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel, passage function, for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset, ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. All three are passage function rather than keyed storeroom, so they suit an opening that does not need to be locked from the corridor.
14) Will a Baldwin 6310 storeroom mortise lock drop into the same prep as a Schlage L9080?
Not without changing the door prep. The Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom knob-by-knob mortise lock body and the 6310190RRLS right hand reverse lever version are both 2-1/2 inch backset products, while the Schlage L9080 is 2-3/4 inch backset with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case. The Baldwin bodies are listed for doors 1-3/8 inch and over; the L9080 is a 1-3/4 inch door product. If the existing pocket is cut for a 2-3/4 inch backset, the Baldwin will not line up on the cylinder and spindle centers.
15) If I want a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock that accepts an interchangeable core, what are my choices?
The Schlage L9080 can be ordered with a B cylinder option for SFIC less prep core, or a J option for Schlage FSIC less core, alongside the standard P conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder and an L less-cylinder option. The Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors, so it is the cross-brand answer for a facility already standardized on a core system. Both are Grade 1 storeroom function, so the operation at the door is the same either way.
16) Is the Schlage LE Series mobile-enabled mortise lock the same grade as an L9080?
No. The Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED, offered in privacy, office and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors with a 3-hour fire rating. The Schlage L9080 is Grade 1 in storeroom function on a 1-3/4 inch door. Where a specification calls for Grade 1 with mobile credentials, the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3-hour fire rating.
17) What finishes does the Schlage L9080 come in, and can I match it to the rest of my building?
Twelve finishes on the L9080: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze. 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless are the two that show up most on commercial interiors. The lever, rose and finish are the same on both sides of the door with a matching latch and strike, so one order covers the whole opening. Every L Series lever also suites with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, which is how you keep a corridor of storerooms, classrooms and exit doors looking identical.
18) Should I choose a rose or an escutcheon for a Schlage L9080, and what is the difference?
Four trim choices, and the door decides. A and B are wrought roses, a small round plate behind the lever, which is what most commercial jobs run. L is a cast or forged escutcheon, a full plate, and it covers doors from 1-3/8 up to 2-1/2 inches. N is a wrought escutcheon, covering 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. An escutcheon is the pick when you are replacing older trim and need to hide previous prep or a scarred face; a rose is the cleaner, lower-cost look on a new opening. The 02 lever design is what carries on all of them.
19) What is the difference between a Schlage L9080 and the Cal-Royal NM8080 storeroom mortise lock?
Both are Grade 1 storeroom mortise locks for 1-3/4 inch doors, so either satisfies a storeroom line on a schedule. The Cal-Royal NM8080 is offered with an interchangeable core option. The Schlage L9080 gives you a wider ordering matrix: four cylinder preps including small format and Schlage full size interchangeable core, twelve finishes, and rose or escutcheon trim, plus the levers suite across Von Duprin exit devices. If the building is already standardized on Schlage keyways, staying with the L Series keeps one key system. The Accentra 8805FL with the Arcadia lever is another Grade 1 storeroom mortise option.
20) I need a keypad or card reader on a storeroom door instead of a key. What should I use instead of the L9080?
The L9080 is purely mechanical, no electronics in it, so if you want codes or credentials you are looking at a different lock. The Schlage CO-100 standalone electronic mortise lock takes a keypad reader and is Grade 1 heavy duty on 1-3/4 inch doors. Schlage Electronics LEMD is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating. For a networked access control tie-in, the Command Access ML190 Series is a motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU and 24VDC power in a storeroom function. Sticking mechanical keeps you off power and wiring entirely, which is why most stockrooms and mechanical rooms still run the L9080.
21) I need a classroom or office mortise lock, not storeroom. What are my options?
Storeroom is the wrong function if anyone needs to leave the outside lever unlocked during the day. For classroom, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch. For an office or entrance door, the Cal-Royal NM8050 is the Grade 1 office/entrance version. Privacy on a restroom or similar goes to the Cal-Royal NM8440, Grade 1 with a deadbolt. The L Series itself runs over 55 functions on a common lock case, so the same lever, rose and finish carry across the whole building even where the function changes door to door.
22) Does the Schlage L9080 have a deadbolt, and is a latch alone enough security for a stockroom?
No deadbolt on the L9080. It is a non-deadbolt storeroom function, latchbolt only, with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt as soon as the door closes so it cannot be carded or shimmed. That combination is what earns Grade 1 security under A156.13 and it is the standard arrangement for storerooms and mechanical rooms. It also keeps egress clean, since one motion on the inside lever gets you out with no second bolt to retract. If your insurer or spec demands a throwbolt, you need a deadbolt function from the L Series rather than the L9080.
23) Is there a simpler mortise lock for a door that does not need to be keyed at all?
The Schlage L9080 is a keyed single-cylinder lock and ships standard with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder. If the opening only needs a latch that operates from both sides with no key, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose trim on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors. The Hager 3810E is the same passage function with escutcheon trim rather than a rose. Passage function gives no security at the opening, so it suits closets and hall doors rather than a stockroom.
24) Are the Emtek Brisbane and Manhattan mortise entrance locksets an alternative to a Schlage L9080?
They are not. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function - trim that mounts to the door and does not operate a latch or accept a key. The Schlage L9080 is a keyed Grade 1 storeroom lock with a working latchbolt and auxiliary latch. Dummy sets are used on an inactive leaf or to match appearance on a door that does not latch; they do not secure an opening. The Falcon MESC600DT is likewise dummy escutcheon lever trim, intended for M9900 Series exit devices.
25) What is the difference between a Schlage L9080 and a BEST 45H public entrance mortise lock?
The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function with field reversible operation, and the 45HCAINL is a heavy duty mortise lockbody in intruder function. Both are lock bodies, so trim is specified separately. The Schlage L9080 is supplied as a storeroom-function lock with the same lever, rose and finish for both sides of the door plus coordinating latch and strike, and it is a handed product. On a storeroom opening the L9080 arrives complete; the BEST bodies require the trim selection to be made alongside.
26) The restroom door needs privacy, not storeroom - what mortise lock covers that?
The Schlage L9080 is keyed storeroom function and has no inside privacy control. For a restroom or bed/bath opening, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inch. The Hager shares the 2-3/4 inch backset of the L9080. The Alarm Lock DL4500 is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with a privacy keypad and 2,000 user codes if the opening is to be controlled by code.
27) Is the Marks USA 21AC or 22AC ornamental iron mortise lock an option for the same door as an L9080?
Only if the door is an ornamental iron or narrow stile leaf. The Marks USA 21AC and 22AC are entrance double cylinder ornamental iron mortise locks with a round knob, both listed for 1 inch door thickness. The Schlage L9080 is a 1-3/4 inch door product with a lever handle and single cylinder keying. A 1 inch iron gate or grille door will not accept the L9080 case, and a 1-3/4 inch wood or hollow metal door will not take the Marks iron locks.
28) What mortise lock suits a dormitory or corridor door where the outside must be lockable from inside?
The Schlage L9080 keeps the outside lever permanently inoperable, so occupants cannot secure the door themselves. The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, which gives corridor and dormitory operation with a bolt the occupant throws. Both are Grade 1 heavy duty mortise locks, so the security rating of the opening is unchanged by the swap.
29) Is a Codelocks CL2255 a substitute for a Grade 1 mortise storeroom lock?
It fills a different duty class. The Codelocks CL2255 is an electronic tubular mortise latch in the CL2000 Series with a brushed steel finish, rated medium duty. The Schlage L9080 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lock with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch case. For a high-traffic stockroom or commercial corridor specified at Grade 1, the Accentra 8805FL Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock or the Cal-Royal NM8080 Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset are the closer matches.
30) Can a Kaba Ilco BR bottom rail lock be used on an aluminum glass door instead of a mortise lockset?
For a glass door, yes - and the Schlage L9080 is not the right part for that opening. The Kaba Ilco BR Series is a glass door bottom rail lock, and the Alarm Lock DL1300NW is a Trilogy Networx wireless electronic mortise lock with keypad made for Adams Rite deadlatches, which is the narrow stile aluminum application. The L9080 requires a 1-3/4 inch door with a 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch mortise pocket, which a glass door bottom rail or a narrow aluminum stile will not accept.
31) How heavy duty is the Schlage L9080, and will it hold up on a high traffic door?
Heavy duty commercial rating, Grade 1 under A156.13 for both operational and security, which is the top ANSI tier and the one written for doors that cycle all day. The lock components are cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating for corrosion resistance. A security blocking hub stops the lock being picked by pulling the levers off. For a receiving door, a service corridor or a stockroom that sees traffic every shift, this is the class of lock the spec normally calls for.
32) Can I upgrade a Schlage L9080 to a higher security cylinder later?
Yes. A UL437 listed locking cylinder is an option on the L Series, specified as a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder. Because the L9080 orders with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard, or as less cylinder, you can put the lock in now and change the cylinder later without touching the lock case or the door prep. That is the usual path when a storeroom holding tools or controlled stock needs key control added after the fact.
33) Are Sargent 130KB and 130W thumbturns a way to add inside locking to a storeroom mortise lock?
They are not a substitute for the lock itself. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn in the 8200 Series and the 130W is a standard duty mortise thumbturn with a round backplate in the 7800 Series - both are trim pieces for their own lock bodies. The Schlage L9080 is a complete storeroom-function lock whose outside lever is always inoperable and whose inside lever is always free for egress; there is no inside locking control to add. An opening that needs occupant-side locking calls for a different function, such as the Sargent 7925 dormitory exit lock.
