Schlage L9080P 18B 643E – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage L9080 storeroom function actually do on the door?
The L9080 keeps the outside lever permanently inoperable. Entry from the outside is by key only, the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt for free egress, and an auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door closes. There is no deadbolt and no thumbturn, so nobody can leave the door unlocked by accident. That is why it is the standard choice for stock rooms, mechanical rooms, IT closets and storage in commercial buildings.
2) Will the Schlage L9080 mortise lock fit my door thickness and existing 2-3/4 inch backset prep?
Backset is 2-3/4 inches, the standard commercial mortise backset, and the lock is built for 1-3/4 inch doors. The mortise pocket needs to take a case of 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, with a 1-1/4 x 8 inch armor front. If your doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inches, the L escutcheon trim covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inches.
3) Do I have to specify handing when ordering an L9080 storeroom lock?
Yes, handing is required. The L9080 is a handed lock, so you need to know whether the opening is left hand, left hand reverse, right hand or right hand reverse before you order. Stand outside the door: the side the hinges are on and whether the door swings toward or away from you determines it. If you want a field reversible mortise body instead, the BEST 45H series lock bodies are field reversible.
4) Can I get the L9080 to work on my building's existing master key system?
Yes, and the cylinder choice is how you do it. Standard is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway. If your facility runs small format interchangeable core, order the B option, which is prepped less core so you can drop in your own SFIC. For Schlage full size interchangeable core, the J option comes less core. The L option ships with no conventional cylinder at all if you are supplying your own. On keying, you can order keyed different, keyed alike across a set of locks, or with no cylinder for the less-cylinder options.
5) Is the Schlage L9080 approved for a fire rated door?
The L9080 is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you verify it on the job. The only L Series exceptions to the 3-hour listing are the L9076 and L9077, which are not this function.
6) What grade is the L9080, and does the cylinder choice change the security rating?
It does change it. With the standard conventional cylinder the lock is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012, Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security. Specify Schlage FSIC interchangeable core and it holds Grade 1 operational but drops to Grade 2 security. Specify SFIC and it is Grade 1 operational, Grade 3 security. If a spec sheet calls for Grade 1 security, you need the conventional or concealed shell cylinder. The function corresponds to ANSI F07.
7) Should I use a storeroom mortise lock or an office/entrance function for a room staff need to leave unlocked sometimes?
Storeroom is the wrong pick for that. The L9080 outside lever never operates, so the door is locked at all times and there is no way to hold it unlocked. If staff need to leave the room open during the day, go to an entrance/office function that has a thumbturn or push button to unlock the outside lever. Comparable Grade 1 office/entrance mortise options include the Cal-Royal NM8050 for 1-3/4 inch doors and the Hager 3850E with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
8) I need a storeroom mortise lock but with keypad access instead of a key - what should I use?
For electronic access on a mortise prep, the Command Access ML190 Series is a heavy-duty storeroom-function motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC, and the Accentra nexTouch NTM623-NR is a Grade 1 mortise lock with a capacitive touchscreen keypad and cylinder override, no deadbolt. The Schlage L9080 is a mechanical lock with no electronic function, keyed with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard.
9) My door is 1-5/8 inch thick - can I still use the Schlage L9080?
The L9080 as configured is for 1-3/4 inch doors, though the L rose/escutcheon option covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch. If you need a lock rated down to 1-5/8 inch, the Alarm Lock DL2700CR and DL3500CR Trilogy electronic mortise locks are Grade 1 classroom function for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, and the Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom mortise body covers 1-3/8 inch and over.
10) Will the L9080 latch into my existing ANSI strike, or do I need the new one?
A 10-072 strike ships with the lock: 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, box strike, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the standard ANSI square-corner cutout, so if your frame is already prepped for a square corner ANSI strike it drops in. Frames with a radius (curved corner) cutout will need the corners dressed or a radius strike specified instead.
11) Will the 18 lever on this Schlage lock match the exit devices and other hardware in my building?
All L Series levers, including the 18 design, suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT. So a corridor with Von Duprin panic hardware and L9080 storerooms can carry one lever design throughout. Twelve finishes are offered, from 605 bright brass and 606 satin brass through 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 and 626 chrome, 629 and 630 stainless, and 643E aged bronze.
12) What are the alternatives if I want a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock from another brand?
Two direct peers: the Accentra 8805FL, a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080, a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors with an interchangeable core option. Both cover the same storeroom function as the L9080. Where the Schlage separates itself is the option depth, over 55 functions on a universal case, 33 lever designs and eight rose and escutcheon choices, which matters when you are standardizing a whole facility.
13) Does the L9080 meet ADA and Buy American requirements for a government or school project?
Both are covered. The L Series meets ADA requirements, and levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. It also meets the Buy American Act, and there are Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings on the series. For high-security cylinders, a UL437 listed option is available by specifying a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder.
14) Is the L9080 a mechanical lock or does it need power and wiring?
Strictly mechanical. The L9080 needs no power, no wiring and no transfer hinge, key outside and lever inside. If you need access control on that opening, the L Series electrified functions auto-detect 12V or 24V DC with customer-selectable fail safe or fail secure and offer RX, DPS, latchbolt and deadbolt monitoring. Standalone options in the same mortise footprint include the Schlage CO-100 keypad mortise lock and the ENGAGE LEMD wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader.
15) What do I need to pick on the order form for a Schlage L9080 besides the lever?
Four decisions. Cylinder: P for the conventional 6-pin C keyway, B prepped less core for SFIC, J less core for Schlage FSIC, or L less conventional cylinder. Rose or escutcheon: A or B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon, or N wrought escutcheon. Finish, from the twelve offered. And keying: keyed different, keyed alike across a group of locks, or none if you went with a less-cylinder option. There is also a free text field for special cylinder or keying requirements if you are matching an existing system.
16) What is the difference between the Schlage L9080 and the Cal-Royal NM8050 or NM8070?
They are all heavy duty Grade 1 mortise locksets for 1-3/4 inch doors, but the function differs. The L9080 is storeroom: the outside lever is always inoperable and the latchbolt is retracted by key outside or lever inside. The Cal-Royal NM8050 is an office/entrance function with auxiliary deadlatch, and the NM8070 is classroom function. Pick by how the opening needs to behave, not by the body.
17) Is the Hager 3850E or 3810S a substitute for a Schlage L9080?
No. The Hager 3850E is an office function mortise lock and is non-keyed, and the Hager 3810S and 3810E are passage function, so neither locks the outside lever or takes a key. The Schlage L9080 is a keyed single-cylinder storeroom lock. All three Hager units share the 2-3/4 inch backset the L9080 uses, so the door prep lines up, but the function does not.
18) What storeroom-style mortise lock should I use on a behavioral health or ligature-resistant opening instead of the L9080?
The L9080 uses a standard 18 lever trim. For anti-ligature openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset and the MRX-A-01 is the ligature resistant arch trim version, both passage function on 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant. Note those are passage function, so they do not key-lock the opening the way the storeroom L9080 does.
19) If I need a deadbolt on the opening, is the L9080 the right lock?
No. The L9080 is a non-deadbolt storeroom function with an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. For an actual deadbolt, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset matching the L9080 prep, the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a no-handing mortise deadbolt, and the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors.
20) How does the Schlage L9080 compare to the Sargent 7925 for a dormitory corridor door?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty corridor/dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. The Schlage L9080 is Grade 1 heavy duty as well but is a non-deadbolt storeroom function: outside lever always inoperable, key outside or lever inside retracts the latchbolt. If the room needs an occupant-thrown deadbolt, the 7925 is the pattern; if the door should simply stay locked and key-only from outside, the L9080 is.
21) I want to add credential or mobile access later - what Schlage mortise options pair with an L Series standard?
Within Schlage mortise, the ENGAGE LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and mobile-enabled deadbolt with LED, rated for 3 hour fire doors, and the LE Series LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors. The mechanical L9080 is Grade 1 storeroom with a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder as standard, and L Series levers suite with the LE line.
22) Can I order a mortise lock body only instead of the complete L9080 lockset?
The L9080 ships as a complete handed lockset with the 18 lever, matching rose or escutcheon both sides, latch and strike. If you only need a body, the BEST 45H Series heavy duty mortise lock bodies are sold as lock bodies with field reversible operation, including the public entrance function 45HCAC and the intruder function 45HCAINL, and the Baldwin 6310 is a 2-1/2 inch backset entry/storeroom mortise lock body. Watch the backset: the L9080 is 2-3/4 inch.
23) Is a Corbin Russwin ML2003 an acceptable substitute for the Schlage L9080?
Only if the door is meant to be a classroom opening. The Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 ML2000 Series mortise lockset in classroom function for 1-3/4 inch doors, which means the outside lever is key-locked and unlocked rather than permanently inoperable. The Schlage L9080 is Grade 1 storeroom on 1-3/4 inch doors, with the outside lever always inoperable and key-only entry. Same grade and door thickness, different security behavior.
24) Is the L9080 tough enough for a high traffic service corridor?
It is a heavy duty commercial mortise lock, not a residential or light commercial product. The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, it exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 security and operational standards, and a security blocking hub stops picking attempts made by removing the levers. It also carries ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40 and is UL listed.
25) What mortise lock should I use for a decorative residential entrance rather than the L9080?
The L9080 is a commercial Grade 1 storeroom lock. For decorative residential openings, the Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment mortise lock body comes knob by knob or lever by lever on a 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 inch and over, and the Emtek mortise entrance locksets such as the 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan cover ornamental trim styles. Confirm function carefully, as those Emtek trims are dummy function.
