Schlage L9091EL-06A-626-RX – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What happens to the Schlage L9091EL when power is lost?
It unlocks. The L9091EL is the EL (fail safe) version, meaning both levers are held locked while energized and release to free egress and entry when power drops. Power is 12 or 24VDC, drawing 400mA. If you need the opposite behavior (locked on power loss, fail secure), you want the EU configuration instead.
2) Does the L9091EL have a key cylinder override?
No. The L9091EL is a non-keyed mortise lock with no cylinder, so access control is entirely through the electrified levers and whatever reader or credential system drives them. There is no mechanical key bypass. If you need a key override on the outside, specify a keyed electrified L9000 function instead.
3) Do I have to order this mortise lock handed?
No. The L9091EL lock body is field reversible, so one lock covers left and right hand openings. Two lever designs are the exception: the 12 Lever is ordered specifically as Left Hand or Right Hand because of its shape. The other lever styles (01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 17 and Omega) are not handed at the ordering stage.
4) Will the L9091EL latch into the strike already in my frame?
The lock ships with a 3/4 inch stainless steel latch with anti-friction tongue and the 10-072 strike, a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your existing frame has a square corner ANSI prep of those dimensions, the supplied strike drops in. Radius corner frames or a different lip length mean you should plan on a different strike or frame work.
5) Is this lock rated for a 3-hour fire door and does it meet ADA?
The Schlage L9000 mortise locks are tested and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 security and operational, and are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors (L9076 and L9077 excepted). UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors to 4 ft x 10 ft and pairs to 8 ft x 10 ft, with the letter F and UL symbol stamped on the latch front. The levers meet ADA requirements, and electrified functions are UL19X listed for single-point locking. The line also meets Buy American Act requirements.
6) I need latch retraction for a card reader, not just lever control. Is the L9091EL the right lock?
No. The L9091EL controls the levers only, locking or unlocking them electrically; the latchbolt itself stays projected. If your application needs the latch pulled back electrically (remote release into a free-swinging door, or push-pull operation), look at a motorized latch retraction mortise lock such as the SDC 7600 Series, Grade 1 with 24VDC control for 1-3/4 inch doors, or the Command Access LPM190-M-EU-CH storeroom function 24V motorized latch retraction lock.
7) What is the closest alternative to the Schlage L9091EL if I need a Grade 1 electrified mortise lock rated for a 1-3/4 inch door?
The SDC 7600 Series motorized latch retraction mortise lockset is the nearest match on the two specs that usually govern the decision: it is listed as Grade 1 and for 1-3/4 inch door thickness, the same door thickness the L9091EL is built for. The difference is in how the electrification works. The L9091EL uses electrically locking/unlocking levers, with both levers continuously locked (EL) or unlocked (EU) by 12V or 24V DC, so the latchbolt stays projected and the lever control changes. The SDC 7600 is motorized latch retraction on 24VDC control, which physically withdraws the latch. If your access control sequence depends on lever control rather than latch retraction, stay with the L9091EL.
8) I need an electrified mortise lock with a keyed storeroom override - the L9091EL has no cylinder. What should I look at instead?
The Schlage L9091EL is a non-keyed function, so there is no cylinder override on it. For a storeroom-function electrified mortise lock, the DynaLock EML-1 is listed as storeroom function, and Command Access offers the ML1080LB heavy-duty storeroom function mortise lock chassis and the LPM190-M-EU-CH, a 24V motorized latch retraction mortise lock with electric unlock in storeroom function. All three change how the outside lever is controlled mechanically versus the L9091EL, where both levers are electrically locked or unlocked together with no mechanical override path.
9) Can I use a Command Access LPM110ECH in place of a Schlage L9091EL?
They solve different problems. The Command Access LPM110ECH is an electrified latch retraction mortise lock chassis running on 24VDC operation - it pulls the latchbolt back on signal, which is what you want for remote release or momentary entry. The Schlage L9091EL is a fail safe electric lock/unlock function: both levers are continuously locked or unlocked by 12V or 24V DC and the auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed. If the door is on a fire-rated opening where the latch must stay projected, latch retraction is not an equivalent swap. Both are heavy duty.
10) My panel is 12VDC only. Which electrified mortise locks work, the Schlage L9091EL or the Command Access and SDC motorized options?
The Schlage L9091EL auto detects 12V/24V DC, so a 12VDC supply is fine and the EL/EU orientation is customer selectable. The Command Access LPM110ECH is listed with 24VDC operation, the LPM190-M-EU-CH as a 24V motorized unit, and the SDC 7600 with 24VDC control - all three are specified at 24V. On a 12V head end, the L9091EL is the one that drops in without a separate power supply change.
11) What is the request to exit (RX) switch on the L9091EL for?
RX signals your access control panel that someone has turned the inside lever to exit, so the panel can shunt the door alarm instead of reporting a forced opening. It is a monitoring output, not part of the locking mechanism. Schlage's electrified L Series also offers DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor as monitoring options on these functions.
12) Can I match these levers to the Von Duprin exit devices on my other doors?
Yes. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices, and with the related L Series LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so a stairwell exit device and an electrified office opening can carry the same lever and finish. For a property manager standardizing a building, that is the reason to stay inside the L Series rather than mixing brands.
13) What lever, rose and finish choices do I pick when ordering an L9091EL?
Three choices decide the trim. Lever style: 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12 (in LH or RH), 17, or OME Omega. Rose or escutcheon: A wrought rose, B wrought rose, L full face escutcheon, or N escutcheon. Finish: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel, or 643E aged bronze.
14) Is the L9091EL a solenoid lock or a motor driven one?
Schlage's electrified L Series functions are motor driven, and they auto detect 12V or 24V DC with customer-selectable EL or EU behavior in the field. Current draw is 400mA. A solenoid-controlled alternative is the SDC Selectric 7800 PRO Series mortise lock with vandal resistant clutch, also built for 1-3/4 inch doors.
15) Is there an electrified mortise option if I only want to replace the chassis in an existing lock?
The L9091EL is a complete Schlage L9000 mortise lock, not a chassis-only part. If your plan is to electrify hardware you already have, Command Access sells heavy-duty electrified mortise lock chassis, including the LPM110ECH 24VDC latch retraction chassis and the ML1080LB storeroom function chassis. Those are chassis-level products, so confirm the host lock case they are intended for before ordering.
16) What electrified mortise lock should I specify for a behavioral health or detention opening instead of the L9091EL?
Look at the Command Access ML04EU, an electrified mortise lock chassis listed in asylum/institution/utility function - that function is the one normally written for those openings. The Schlage L9091EL is a non-keyed electric lock/unlock function with both levers controlled together, which is not an institutional function. Schlage does offer ligature resistant trim within the L Series line if the trim, rather than the function, is what the opening requires.
17) Is the SDC 7800 PRO a substitute for the Schlage L9091EL on a high-abuse door?
The SDC Selectric 7800 PRO is a solenoid controlled mortise lock with a vandal resistant clutch, listed for 1-3/4 inch door thickness, the same thickness the L9091EL is specified for. The clutch is the differentiator - it lets the outside lever free-wheel under force. Schlage covers that requirement differently, with the Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim option available on most L Series functions including electrified, so the L9091EL can be ordered with that protection rather than swapping brands.
18) I ordered a Command Access mortise lock chassis expecting a complete lockset - how does that differ from the Schlage L9091EL?
Several of the Command Access items are chassis only: the LPM110ECH, the ML04EU, and the ML1080LB are all described as mortise lock chassis, intended to go behind trim you already have or specify separately. The Schlage L9091EL is ordered as a complete lock with lever style, rose or escutcheon design, and finish selected together - lever choices include 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 17 and Omega, with A and B wrought rose, N escutcheon, or L full face escutcheon. If you are matching existing trim on a door, the chassis route keeps the trim; if you are building the whole opening, the L9091EL arrives configured.
19) Is this lock heavy enough for a high traffic school or healthcare corridor?
It is a heavy duty commercial mortise lock, Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 for both security and operational cycles. The lock case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, and a security blocking hub prevents picking by removing the levers. For behavioral health openings, Schlage offers ligature resistant trim options on the L Series.
20) Can I get a visual indicator showing whether the door is locked?
Yes. The L Series offers an exclusive 180 degree visibility indicator as an option, readable from a wide angle down the corridor. Also available across the line: Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim (offered on most functions including electrified), tactile warning, anti-microbial coatings, and alternate door thickness and finish/trim combinations.
