Schlage L9091EU-06A-626-RX – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What happens to the Schlage L9091EU when the power drops?
Wired as EU (electrically unlocked), both levers are held retracted/unlocked while energized, so when power drops the levers lock. That is the fail secure condition, and it means people on both sides need the door unlocked electrically to get through. The same lock case is customer-selectable between EL and EU, so if you need the opening to release on power loss you flip it to EL instead. There is no cylinder override on the L9091EU, so plan a separate means of mechanical egress or entry if your code official requires one.
2) Will the L9091EU mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door, and does it work on both hands?
1-3/4 inches is the door thickness it is built for, which is the standard commercial leaf. The lock is field reversible, so one lock covers left and right hand openings without ordering a hand. Case size is 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches with a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the door needs a standard L Series mortise pocket and edge prep. Note that the 12 Lever design is ordered as a specific left hand or right hand lever even though the case itself reverses.
3) What voltage and current does the L9091EU electrified mortise lock draw, and do I need to specify 12V or 24V?
It auto-detects, so you do not pick a voltage at the order stage. The lock runs on 12 or 24VDC and draws 400mA. Size the power supply and the door loop wire for 400mA at the voltage you are feeding, and remember the EU configuration is energized whenever the door is meant to be unlocked, so that draw is continuous during unlocked periods.
4) Does this Schlage lock have request-to-exit signaling for my access control panel?
Yes, RX is part of this configuration. The L Series electrified locks offer RX along with DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor, so the panel can see when someone turns the inside lever to leave and shunt the alarm or release a door position input. Run the monitoring conductors through the same electric hinge or power transfer as the lock power.
5) Will the L9091EU latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
It ships with a 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner with a box and a 1-3/16 inch lip. The latch is a 3/4 inch stainless steel latchbolt with an anti-friction tongue, and an auxiliary latch deadlocks it once the door closes. If your existing frame already has a 4-7/8 inch ANSI square corner cutout the supplied strike drops in; radius corner frames or a different lip length for a deep reveal need the matching strike instead.
6) Is this mortise lock keyed, and can a key get me in if the access control system is down?
No cylinder and no key. The L9091EU is a non-keyed function with no cylinder override, so access is entirely electrical on both sides. If you need a mechanical key override on the same opening, choose a keyed electrified L9000 function instead. This one is for openings where a card reader or intercom controls entry and a key bypass is deliberately excluded.
7) Is the Schlage L9091EU fire rated and ADA compliant for a school or hospital opening?
The L9000 series is tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 security and operational, UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors to 4 x 10 feet and pairs to 8 x 10 feet, with the letter F and UL symbol stamped on the latch front. Electrified functions are UL19X listed for single-point locking. The levers meet ADA requirements, and it meets the Buy American Act, which matters on federal and many state jobs.
8) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage L9091EU if the opening needs a keyed storeroom override instead of a non-keyed lock?
The Schlage L9091EU is a non-keyed electrified mortise lock with no cylinder override - both levers are electrically locked or unlocked by 12 or 24VDC. For an electrified mortise lock built around a storeroom function, the Command Access LPM190-M-EU-CH is a 24V motorized latch retraction mortise lock with electric unlock in storeroom function, and the DynaLock EML-1 is an electrified mortise lock in storeroom function. Both keep a keyed outside trim function rather than relying entirely on power to control the levers.
9) What do I have to specify when ordering the L9091EU?
Three choices set the part: lever design, rose or escutcheon, and finish. Levers are 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12 (ordered LH or RH), 17, and the Omega. Trim is A or B wrought rose, L full face escutcheon, or N escutcheon. Finishes are 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless, and 643E aged bronze. EL versus EU is selectable at install rather than a separate part.
10) Will these levers match the Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage locks on my other doors?
They will. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a building can run one lever design and finish across mortise locks, electrified openings and panic hardware. For a property manager standardizing a fleet of doors, pick the lever and finish once and carry it across the other functions.
11) Should I use an electrified mortise lock like this or a motorized latch retraction lock?
The L9091EU controls the levers: energizing it frees both levers so a person can operate the door normally, while the latchbolt stays projected and the door stays latched and deadlocked. Motorized latch retraction locks pull the latchbolt back instead, leaving the door free to push open with no hardware operation at all, which is what you want for automatic operators or a hands-free opening. If that is your application, look at the SDC 7600 Series Grade 1 motorized latch retraction mortise lockset or the Command Access LPM190-M-EU-CH, which combines 24V motorized retraction with electric unlock.
12) What are the alternatives to the L9091EU if I need a keyed storeroom function on an electrified mortise lock?
The L9091EU has no cylinder at all, so storeroom keying is outside what it does. Among other brands, the DynaLock EML-1 Series is an electrified mortise lock in storeroom function, and Command Access offers the ML1080LB heavy-duty storeroom chassis and the LPM190-M-EU-CH, also storeroom. For a behavioral health or utility opening, the Command Access ML04EU is an asylum/institution/utility function chassis.
13) What should I use instead of the Schlage L9091EU on a behavioral health or utility door?
The L9091EU is a non-keyed electrified function with both levers under power control. For an institutional or asylum/utility opening, the Command Access ML04EU is an electrified mortise lock chassis in asylum/institution/utility function, heavy-duty like the Schlage. That function set is the usual specification where both sides must be controlled independently of a latch-retraction or lever-power arrangement.
14) Can I use a Command Access mortise lock chassis in place of a full Schlage L9091EU lockset?
They are not the same scope of supply. The Schlage L9091EU is ordered as a complete lockset with lever style, rose or escutcheon design, and finish selected, and ships with a 10-072 square corner box strike. The Command Access ML1080LB and ML04EU are mortise lock chassis, so trim is handled separately. Confirm what trim you already have on the door before treating a chassis as a drop-in for a complete lockset.
15) How durable is this lock for a high-traffic entry, and what is the lock case made of?
Heavy duty, built for commercial use, with the case in cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating for corrosion resistance inside the door. It exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 security and operational standards, which is the top commercial rating for an entry that sees constant use. A security blocking hub prevents picking by removing the levers, and the locking lever bushing leaves no exposed screws on the inside lever for someone to attack.
16) Can I get a free-wheeling outside lever on this electrified lock for an abuse-prone opening?
Yes. Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim is available on most L Series functions, including electrified ones, so a forced turn on the locked outside lever spins without transmitting to the lock case. There is also a 180 degree visibility indicator option and ligature resistant trim for behavioral health work. Those are option specifications made when the lock is configured, not separate parts you bolt on later.
17) I need a 24V-only electrified mortise lock. Does the Schlage L9091EU work, or should I look at something else?
The Schlage L9091EU auto detects and runs on either 12 or 24VDC, so a 24V supply is fine. If you prefer a lock specified solely for 24VDC operation, the SDC 7600 Series is a Grade 1 mortise lockset with 24VDC control and the Command Access LPM110ECH chassis is a 24VDC unit, though both are latch retraction designs rather than lever power control.
