Schlage L9094ELP-06A-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) On the Schlage L9094EL, what happens to the outside lever when power is lost?
Power loss unlocks the outside lever. The L9094EL is the fail safe (EL) version: the outside lever is held continuously locked by 12V or 24V DC, so cutting power releases it and the door can be opened from the outside. If you need the opposite behavior (locked when power drops), you want the fail secure EU configuration instead. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress either way, and the latchbolt can also be retracted by key or by the inside lever.
2) What power supply do I need to run a Schlage L9094EL electrified mortise lock?
It auto-detects 12 or 24 VDC and draws 400mA, so size your supply and the number of locks on the circuit off that figure. Because it is a fail safe lock, the supply needs to be on continuously to keep the outside lever locked, which means access control designers usually pair it with a battery-backed or supervised supply where the opening must stay secure during an outage.
3) Will the L9094EL fit a 1-3/4 inch door, and do I have to order it left or right hand?
1-3/4 inch is the door thickness it is built for, and handing is not an ordering decision because the lock is field reversible. The mortise case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch, so the door pocket has to accommodate that. Other door thicknesses are available through the L Series options portfolio rather than as the standard build.
4) Will the L9094EL latch into the strike already in my frame?
The latch is a 3/4 inch stainless steel unit with an anti-friction tongue, and an auxiliary latch deadlocks it when the door is closed. It ships with a 10-072 square corner box strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame already has that cutout, or another L Series mortise lock was in it, the new lock drops into the same prep. A frame prepped for a cylindrical lock or a different mortise case will need new prep.
5) What cylinders does the L9094EL take, and why does it need two?
It is a double cylinder keyed function, so there is a cylinder on each side of the door. Standard supply is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. If your facility keys to a high security standard, the L Series accepts a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder for a UL437 listed locking cylinder. Note that going to interchangeable core cylinders drops the assembly to Grade 2 security, while a concealed shell cylinder keeps A156.13 Grade 1 operational and security.
6) What is the closest alternative to the Schlage L9094EL if the opening needs a fail secure electrified mortise lock instead of fail safe?
The L9094EL locks the outside lever continuously when 12/24VDC is applied, so removing power releases the outside lever for entry. Where the opening must stay locked on power loss, the Command Access LPM190-M-EU-CH is a 24V motorized latch retraction mortise lock with an electric unlock storeroom function, and the DynaLock EML-1 is an electrified mortise lock in storeroom function. Storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked at rest with the key retracting the latch, and electric unlock energizes to allow entry.
7) Is there a Grade 1 electrified mortise lockset besides the Schlage L9094EL for a 1-3/4 inch door?
The Schlage L9094EL is a Grade 1 electrified mortise lock for 1-3/4 inch doors, using a universal L9000 case measuring 4-7/16 inches by 6-1/16 inches by 1 inch. The SDC 7600 Series is also a Grade 1 mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and it works by motorized latch retraction under 24VDC control rather than by electrically controlling the outside lever. Motorized latch retraction pulls the latchbolt itself, which suits openings tied to an access control release or to push-pull trim.
8) Can a Schlage L9094EL go on a fire rated door?
The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors (the L9076 and L9077 are the exceptions), and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front identify a listed lock. For electrified openings, note the electrified functions are UL19X listed for single-point locking applications.
9) Is this lock heavy duty enough for a school or hospital main corridor door?
It is a commercial heavy duty mortise lock, tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 for both security and operational, which is the top grade for mortise locksets. Levers meet ADA requirements, and levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. It also meets the Buy American Act, which matters on federally funded work.
10) Can I get door position and request-to-exit monitoring out of this lock instead of adding separate switches?
Yes. The L Series electrified locks offer RX (request to exit), DPS (door position switch), latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor as available features, so an integrator can pull those signals from the lock case rather than fitting a separate frame-mounted contact or REX device. Specify the monitoring options you need when ordering, since they are configured into the lock.
11) Will the levers on this electrified mortise lock match the rest of my Schlage and Von Duprin openings?
They will. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a building can carry one lever design across mortise locks, exit device trim and multipoint locks. The L Series offers 33 lever designs, two knobs, five roses and three escutcheons across 14 finishes. The standard build here is a 06A trim in 626 satin chrome with a lever handle.
12) Do I need to specify keying when ordering, or can I key it later?
Keying is a required choice at order time. Options are no special keying, or key locks alike per cylinder for commercial jobs where a group of doors should run on one key. Remember this is a double cylinder function, so keying applies to a cylinder on each side of the door.
13) What is the difference between a fail safe electrified mortise lock like this and a motorized latch retraction lock?
Two different jobs. The L9094EL controls the outside lever: energized, the lever is locked; de-energized, it releases, while the latchbolt stays projected and the door stays latched. A motorized latch retraction lock pulls the latchbolt itself back so the door can be pushed or pulled open with no lever action at all, which is what you want for automatic operators or remote release of a free-swinging door. ZenSupply carries that style in the SDC 7600 Series, a Grade 1 motorized latch retraction mortise lockset with 24VDC control for 1-3/4 inch doors, and in the Command Access LPM190-M-EU-CH 24V motorized latch retraction mortise lock with electric unlock.
14) I only need to electrify the lock body I already have. Is there an alternative to buying a complete Schlage L9094EL?
If the trim and prep are staying and you only want an electrified chassis, Command Access sells chassis-level options: the LPM110ECH electrified latch retraction mortise lock chassis with 24VDC operation, the ML1080LB heavy-duty storeroom function chassis, and the ML04EU institutional function chassis. All three are heavy-duty. The L9094EL by contrast is a complete electrified mortise lock with trim, cylinders and strike, and its own 12/24VDC auto-detecting electronics.
15) I need a storeroom function electrified mortise lock, not a fail safe outside lever. What should I look at instead?
The L9094EL is a double cylinder keyed function with a fail safe outside lever, not a storeroom lock. For storeroom function electrified mortise locks, ZenSupply carries the DynaLock EML-1 Series, the Command Access ML1080LB heavy-duty chassis, and the Command Access LPM190-M-EU-CH, which is storeroom function with motorized latch retraction and electric unlock. For behavioral health or utility openings, the Command Access ML04EU is an asylum/institution/utility function.
16) Does the outside lever on the L9094EL lock people in during a fire alarm?
No. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress regardless of whether the lock is energized, so the door can always be opened from the secure side without a key or a special release. That is what lets it be used on rated egress openings.
17) Can I use a Command Access mortise lock chassis in place of a Schlage L9094EL?
They solve the same problem differently. The L9094EL is a complete double cylinder keyed electrified mortise lock with a 3/4 inch stainless steel latch with anti-friction tongue and a 10-072 box strike, supplied as a lockset. The Command Access LPM110ECH and ML1080LB are heavy-duty mortise lock chassis - the LPM110ECH is an electrified latch retraction chassis running on 24VDC, and the ML1080LB is a storeroom function chassis. A chassis is bought to go behind existing trim and cylinders, so confirm what trim is already on the door before substituting.
18) How does the SDC 7800 PRO differ from the Schlage L9094EL for a high abuse opening?
Both are electrified mortise locks for 1-3/4 inch doors. The L9094EL controls the outside lever electrically at 12/24VDC drawing 400mA, and the L Series answer to lever abuse is the optional Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim. The SDC Selectric 7800 PRO is a solenoid controlled mortise lock built with a vandal resistant clutch. Decide based on whether you want the free-wheeling trim in the Schlage L Series or SDC's clutch design.
19) Will a latch retraction mortise lock give me the same request to exit signal as the Schlage L9094EL?
The L9094EL is an electrified L9000 lock whose electrified functions offer RX, DPS, latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor, with auto detection of 12V or 24V DC and field selectable EL/EU. Latch retraction products such as the Command Access LPM110ECH electrified latch retraction chassis and the SDC 7600 motorized latch retraction lockset are specified for retracting the latchbolt under 24VDC control, which is a different job from monitoring the opening. If your access control panel needs an exit or door position input, confirm the monitoring option before substituting.
20) For a non-electrified storeroom mortise lock, what takes the place of the Schlage L9094EL?
The L9094EL is an electrified lock and needs 12/24VDC at 400mA to hold the outside lever locked. Where no power is being run to the door, the Command Access ML1080LB is a heavy-duty storeroom function mortise lock chassis - key retracts the latch from outside, inside lever always free - without the electrical requirement. Note the ML1080LB is a chassis rather than a complete keyed lockset.
21) Can I add a free-wheeling lever or a visual locked/unlocked indicator to this lock?
Both are available on the L Series. Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim is offered on most functions including electrified, which protects the lock case when someone forces a locked lever in a school or dormitory corridor. There is also a 180 degree visibility indicator option so occupants can see lock status from across the room. Other option groups include tactile warning, anti-microbial coatings and Gold Standard ligature resistant trim for behavioral health.
