Schlage L9094ELL-03A-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What happens to the Schlage L9094ELL when the power drops?
It unlocks on the outside. The L9094ELL is the fail safe version: the outside lever is held locked continuously by 12V or 24V DC, so cutting power releases the outside lever and the door can be opened from either side. That is the behavior you want on stair re-entry and access-controlled egress paths. If you need the opposite (locked on power loss), you need the fail secure EU variant instead.
2) Can people always get out from the inside on this electrified mortise lock?
Yes. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress on the L9094ELL, powered or not, so it never traps anyone on the secure side. The latchbolt can be retracted by key from outside or by the inside lever, and an auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed and locked.
3) Does the L9094ELL come with cylinders, and what keyway do I need?
It ships less cylinder, so you supply both cylinders for this double cylinder keyed function. The L9000 standard is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, which is what to match if you are keying into an existing Schlage C system. Interchangeable core cylinders can be used but drop the assembly to Grade 2 security rather than Grade 1. If you need UL437 protection, specify a Primus 20-500 Series cylinder.
4) How much current does the L9094ELL draw, and do I need a separate 12V or 24V power supply?
It draws 400mA and auto detects 12V or 24V DC, so a single access control supply on either voltage will run it without a jumper change. Size the supply for 400mA per lock plus whatever else is on the circuit, and remember this is a fail safe lock, so it is energized whenever the door is meant to be locked.
5) Will the L9094ELL latch into the strike already in my frame?
The standard strike is the 10-072, a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. The latch is a 3/4 inch stainless steel latchbolt with an anti-friction tongue. If your frame already has an ANSI 4-7/8 inch square corner strike prep, the lock drops in; radius corner or T-strike frames need the matching strike ordered instead.
6) Can I use this Schlage electrified mortise lock on a fire rated door?
Yes. L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors (the L9076 and L9077 are the exceptions), and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4' x 10' and pairs up to 8' x 10'. The F letter and UL symbol on the latch front identify the listing. Electrified functions are additionally UL19X listed for single-point locking.
7) Is the L9094ELL Grade 1, and does it meet ADA?
The L9000 line is tested and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 for both security and operational, and also carries ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40. It meets ADA requirements, and all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. It also meets the Buy American Act, which matters on federal and state work.
8) Which electrified mortise lock should I use if the door has an automatic operator?
Look at latch retraction products rather than the Schlage L9094ELL. The Command Access LPM110ECH is an electrified latch retraction mortise lock chassis with 24VDC operation, the LPM190-M-EU-CH is a 24V motorized latch retraction mortise lock in storeroom function with electric unlock, and the SDC 7600 Series is a Grade 1 motorized latch retraction mortise lockset with 24VDC control. The L9094ELL controls the outside lever electrically; its latchbolt is retracted by key or by the inside lever, not by a signal, so it will not pull the latch back for an operator.
9) What is the closest equivalent to the Schlage L9094ELL electrified mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The SDC 7600 Series is the nearest peer: a Grade 1 motorized latch retraction mortise lockset with 24VDC control, fitted to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage L9094ELL is a double cylinder keyed mortise lock whose outside lever is continuously locked by 12V or 24V DC, so it auto detects either voltage rather than running 24VDC only, and it draws 400mA. The functional difference matters: the L9094ELL electrically controls the outside lever and the latchbolt is retracted by key or inside lever, while the 7600 motorizes latch retraction itself, which is what you want when the lock is tied to an automatic operator.
10) I need an electrified mortise lock but do not need a keyed cylinder on both sides. What else should I look at?
The Schlage L9094ELL is a double cylinder keyed function, which means cylinder prep on both faces. If the opening only calls for a storeroom function with a single outside cylinder, the DynaLock EML-1 is an electrified mortise lock in storeroom function, and the Command Access ML1080LB is a heavy-duty storeroom function mortise lock chassis. Both simplify the keying schedule to one cylinder. Keep in mind the L9094ELL is fail safe - the outside lever is locked while energized and unlocks on power loss - so if your fire or egress plan depends on that behavior, a plain storeroom lock will not reproduce it.
11) Do I have to order this mortise lock handed?
No. The L9094ELL is field reversible, so one lock covers left and right hand openings and you can set handing on site. That matters if you are stocking spares across a building instead of ordering per door.
12) Will the 03A lever match the rest of my Schlage and Von Duprin openings?
The 03A is one of the L Series lever designs, and L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices as well as the related LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products. So you can carry the same lever look from a classroom mortise lock through to an exit device on the corridor. The 626 satin chrome finish is the one this is built in.
13) Can I get door position and request-to-exit monitoring with this lock?
Yes, as options on the L Series electrified platform. RX (request to exit), DPS (door position switch), latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor are all available, which lets the access control panel see the door state without a separate frame contact. Specify the monitoring suffixes at order time, since they are built into the lock case.
14) Can I run the Schlage L9094ELL on a 24VDC-only power supply, or do I need a different lock?
The L9094ELL accepts 12 or 24VDC and auto detects the input, at 400mA, so a 24VDC supply works without changing product. If you are standardizing an entire building on 24VDC, peers such as the Command Access LPM110ECH, the LPM190-M-EU-CH and the SDC 7600 Series are specified for 24VDC operation only, which is the tradeoff: one voltage instead of the L9094ELL's dual-voltage flexibility across mixed panels.
15) What electrified mortise lock should I specify for a behavioral health or detention opening instead of the L9094ELL?
For asylum, institution or utility function openings, the Command Access ML04EU is an electrified mortise lock chassis built to that function. The Schlage L9094ELL is a double cylinder keyed function with the inside lever always free for immediate egress, which is the opposite of what an institutional opening usually requires, since those functions control both sides. Note that the L Series does offer ligature resistant trim options for behavioral health, so the trim question and the function question are separate decisions.
16) Is a Command Access mortise lock chassis a drop-in replacement for a Schlage L9094ELL?
Not the same class of item. Products such as the Command Access LPM110ECH and the ML04EU are described as mortise lock chassis, meaning the lock body itself, while the Schlage L9094ELL is supplied with lever trim, a 3/4 inch stainless steel latch with anti-friction tongue and a 10-072 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If you already have L Series trim on the door and are replacing only the body, a chassis-level product is the comparable; if you are hanging a complete lockset, compare the L9094ELL against complete locksets such as the SDC 7600 or SDC 7800 Series.
17) What is a good alternative for a high-abuse opening where levers get forced?
The SDC Selectric 7800 PRO Series is a solenoid controlled mortise lock with a vandal resistant clutch, which lets the outside lever spin free under force. The Schlage L9094ELL addresses abuse differently - the L Series offers a Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim option on most functions including electrified, plus a security blocking hub that prevents picking by removing levers. Both are heavy duty; the choice comes down to whether you want the free-wheeling behavior built into the SDC clutch or specified as an L Series trim option.
18) Is there a free-wheeling trim option so the lever does not break if someone yanks it?
Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim is offered on most L Series functions, including the electrified ones. In an abuse-prone opening such as a school corridor or a transit facility, that lets the outside lever rotate freely when locked instead of transferring force into the lock case. It is an ordering option, so call it out when you specify the lock.
