Schlage L9095ELP-06A-626-RX – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What happens to a Schlage L9095EL if the power goes out?
Power loss unlocks both levers. The L9095EL is an EL (fail safe) function: both levers are held continuously locked by 12 or 24VDC, and a switch or power failure releases them so either lever retracts the latchbolt and the door can be opened from both sides. If you need the opposite behavior, where the door stays locked when power drops, you want an EU (fail secure) function instead. Schlage's electrified L Series locks are customer-selectable EL/EU.
2) Will the Schlage L9095EL fit my door, and does it work on a 1-3/8 inch door?
The L9095EL is built for 1-3/4 inch doors as standard, so a 1-3/8 inch door is not the standard application. It needs a mortise pocket sized for a case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches. Handing is not something you specify: the lock is field reversible, so one unit covers left and right hand openings. Schlage does offer different door thickness options across the L Series, so a non-standard thickness is an option question rather than a flat no.
3) How much current does the Schlage L9095EL draw, and what power supply do I need?
Draw is 400mA, and the lock auto detects 12V or 24V DC, so you can run it off either bus without ordering a voltage-specific part. Size the supply for 400mA per opening at whichever voltage you are running, plus whatever the rest of the door is pulling (strike, mag, reader). Because this is a fail safe EL lock, the supply carries that load continuously while the door is locked, not just in bursts.
4) What does the RX option on a Schlage mortise lock actually do for my access control system?
RX is request to exit: a switch inside the lock case signals the access control panel that someone has operated the lever to leave, so the system can shunt the door alarm instead of reporting a forced door. On the L9095EL it is one of a set of monitoring options on Schlage's electrified L Series, alongside DPS (door position switch), latchbolt monitor and deadbolt monitor. If you are tying a fail safe lock into a panel with an alarmed opening, RX is normally the one you cannot skip.
5) Do I get a cylinder with the Schlage L9095EL, or do I have to order keys separately?
That depends on which cylinder option you pick. Ordering with the P option gets you a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, which is the standard build. Ordering L (less conventional cylinder) ships the lock without one, which is what you want if you are keying into an existing system, an interchangeable core, or a high security cylinder. Note that with interchangeable core cylinders the assembly is Grade 2 security rather than Grade 1, and if you want a UL437 listed cylinder you specify a Primus 20-500 Series.
6) Will a Schlage L9095EL latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The latch is a 3/4 inch stainless steel latchbolt with an anti-friction tongue, and the lock ships with a 10-072 square corner strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your existing frame has a 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 square corner cutout, the supplied strike drops straight in. Measure your lip length against 1-3/16 inches too, since a lip that is short for your jamb depth will let the door bind or fail to latch. Frames with a radius corner or an ANSI 4-7/8 curved cutout need a different strike than the one in the box.
7) Is the Schlage L9095EL approved for a fire rated door?
The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol on the latch front are how an inspector verifies it in the field. Worth knowing for an electrified fail safe opening: the lock's listing covers the door, but a fail safe lock that unlocks on power loss is a code decision for your AHJ on a fire or egress opening, not a hardware limitation.
8) Is the Schlage L9095EL Grade 1, and does it meet ADA?
Grade 1, tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 for both security and operational, and the L9000 line exceeds those Grade 1 standards. It meets ADA requirements, and all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code. It also meets the Buy American Act, which matters if you are buying for a government or federally funded facility, and Schlage holds Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings on the line. The electrified functions carry a UL19X listing for single-point locking.
9) What else can I use if I need a fail secure storeroom mortise lock instead of fail safe?
The L9095EL is a fail safe, keyed double cylinder function, so it is the wrong choice if you want the door to stay locked when power drops. For a storeroom function, the SDC 7600 Series is a Grade 1 motorized latch retraction mortise lockset running on 24VDC for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Command Access LPM190-M-EU-CH is a 24V motorized storeroom mortise lock with electric unlock and optional REX, and the DynaLock EML-1 is an electrified mortise lock in storeroom function. Within Schlage's own L Series, the electrified locks are customer-selectable EL/EU, so the fail secure version of an electrified function is an ordering choice rather than a different family.
10) What is the closest electrified mortise lock to the Schlage L9095EL if I need a Grade 1 lockset on a 1-3/4 inch door?
The SDC 7600 Series motorized latch retraction mortise lockset is the closest peer on grade and door prep: it is a Grade 1 mortise lockset listed for 1-3/4 inch doors, the same door thickness the L9095EL is built for. The difference is in what the electrification does. The L9095EL is a fail safe electrically locking lock, meaning both levers are continuously locked by 12V or 24V DC and a switch or power failure unlocks both levers so the lever retracts the latchbolt. The SDC 7600 is a motorized latch retraction lockset running on 24VDC, so the motor pulls the latch itself rather than controlling lever rigidity. Choose on which behavior the access control sequence needs: lever control with fail safe egress, or powered latch retraction.
11) I only need one side of the door keyed and storeroom behavior, not double cylinder. What should I use instead of the L9095EL?
The L9095EL is a double cylinder keyed function where the latchbolt is retracted by either key, so it is built for openings that need key control from both faces. If the opening only needs a storeroom function, the Command Access ML1080LB heavy-duty mortise lock chassis and the DynaLock EML-1 are both storeroom function mortise locks, and the Command Access LPM190-M-EU-CH is a 24V motorized storeroom function mortise lock with electric unlock and optional REX. The LPM190-M-EU-CH is the nearest match if the opening still needs request-to-exit signalling and electric control, since the L9095EL covered here is the RX version. Note the LPM190 is an electric unlock (EU) arrangement rather than the electrically locking fail safe arrangement of the L9095EL, so the state the door sits in on loss of power is the reverse.
12) Which electrified mortise locks run on the same voltage as the L9095EL so I can reuse the existing power supply?
The L9095EL auto detects 12V or 24V DC and draws 400mA, so it will sit on either a 12VDC or a 24VDC supply. Among the comparable electrified mortise locks, the SDC 7600 Series is a 24VDC motorized latch retraction lockset, the Command Access LPM110ECH is a 24VDC electrified latch retraction chassis, and the Command Access LPM190-M-EU-CH is a 24V motorized mortise lock. All three are fixed 24V, so a 12VDC panel supply that will carry the L9095EL will not carry those without a 24V source. Size the supply against the 400mA draw of the L9095EL and the number of openings on the circuit.
13) Is the L9095EL a double cylinder lock, and can it be locked or unlocked by key from both sides?
Double cylinder, yes, with a cylinder on each side. The latchbolt is retracted by either key, so a key works from outside or inside regardless of whether the levers are energized and locked. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt once the door is closed, which is what stops someone shimming the latch from the outside.
14) What lever styles and finishes can I get on the Schlage L9095EL, and will it match my other doors?
Eight lever designs are orderable on the L9095EL: 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 17 and the Omega (OME), all on the A wrought rose and all in 626 satin chrome. That is the most common commercial finish, so it will sit alongside most existing satin chrome trim. For matching across a building, the L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so one lever design can carry across your mortise locks and your exit device trim.
15) Should I buy an electrified mortise lock or a complete electrified lockset?
There is a real split here. The L9095EL is a complete lock, case, trim, levers and strike, so it replaces the whole mortise lock on the opening. Some of the alternatives are chassis only: the Command Access LPM110ECH and the ML04EU and ML1080LB are electrified mortise lock chassis, meant to drop into an existing mortise prep and reuse the trim you already have. If your existing Schlage trim is in good shape and you only need to add electric control, a chassis is the smaller job. If you are building the opening from scratch or standardizing trim across a facility, the complete lock is the cleaner path.
16) Is the Command Access LPM110ECH a substitute for the Schlage L9095EL?
They solve different problems. The LPM110ECH is an electrified latch retraction mortise lock chassis running on 24VDC, so the electrification retracts the latch and the door swings free on a signal. The L9095EL electrically locks both levers on 12V or 24V DC and releases them on switch or power failure, with the latchbolt retracted by either key - the latch stays projected and the lever is what the access control system governs. A latch retraction chassis will not reproduce fail safe lever control, and the L9095EL will not perform remote latch pull-back. Match to the sequence of operation on the drawing rather than treating them as interchangeable electrified mortise locks.
17) For a behavioral health or detention opening, is the L9095EL the right electrified mortise lock or is there a better fit?
The Command Access ML04EU is an electrified mortise lock chassis built specifically for asylum, institution and utility function, which is the function set those openings are usually specified with. The L9095EL is a double cylinder keyed function with electrically locking levers and is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lock, and the L Series offers ligature resistant trim for behavioral health applications, so it can serve those openings when the sequence calls for fail safe lever control from an access control system. If the spec calls out an institutional function lock case rather than a keyed function, the ML04EU is the closer match.
18) We get abuse on the lever at this opening. Is there an electrified mortise lock with a clutched lever instead of the L9095EL?
The SDC Selectric 7800 PRO is a solenoid controlled mortise lock with a vandal resistant clutch, listed for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the clutch lets the outside lever turn freely when locked rather than resisting the force. The L9095EL answers the same abuse problem a different way: it is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lock and the L Series offers the Vandlgard free-wheeling outside trim option on most functions, including electrified. So the choice is between the SDC 7800 clutch built into the lock and specifying Vandlgard trim on the L9095EL, which keeps the double cylinder keyed function and the fail safe electrically locking levers.
19) I need a complete lockset with levers and finish, not just a chassis. Which of these are full locksets?
The L9095EL is ordered as a complete lever lockset - lever design, rose or escutcheon design, finish and cylinder type are all selected at order, with satin chrome 626 and wrought rose among the combinations, and it ships as a mortise lock with a 3/4 inch stainless steel latch with anti-friction tongue and a 10-072 square corner box strike. The SDC 7600 and the SDC Selectric 7800 PRO are also described as mortise locksets. By contrast the Command Access LPM110ECH, ML04EU and ML1080LB are mortise lock chassis, meaning the lever trim and finish are handled separately. That distinction decides whether one part number completes the opening or whether trim has to be ordered alongside it.
20) Do any of these alternatives take a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder like the Schlage L9095EL?
The L9095EL takes a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway as standard, and it can be ordered with that cylinder supplied or less cylinder so an existing keying system can be carried in. The Command Access ML1080LB, ML04EU, LPM110ECH and LPM190-M-EU-CH are mortise lock chassis, so the cylinder and keying follow whatever trim and cylinder are specified with them rather than arriving as part of the lock. For a facility already keyed to a Schlage C keyway master system, the L9095EL keeps the key system intact without a separate cylinder decision.
21) Is an electrified mortise lock heavy duty enough for a high traffic entry or a school corridor?
Heavy duty is the rating on the L9095EL, and it is a commercial lock, not a residential one. A security blocking hub prevents picking by removing the levers, and the locking lever bushing means there are no exposed screws on the inside levers for someone to attack. Comparable heavy-duty electrified mortise options carried alongside it include the Command Access ML1080LB and LPM110ECH and the DynaLock EML-1. For behavioral health or high risk areas, Schlage also offers a ligature resistant trim option on the L Series.
22) Can I change the function of a Schlage L9000 mortise lock later without buying a new lock?
To a point, yes. The L Series uses a universal lock case that supports 10 different functions from a single lock body, so a number of function changes are a parts and transformation job rather than a new lock. Schlage publishes a Universal Transformation Guide and a service manual covering that work. There are over 55 standard functions in the series overall, so not every function is reachable from any one case, but the common ones are.
