Schlage Electronics MTB15 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage MTB15 reader work with my existing 125 kHz prox cards, or do I have to reissue credentials?
Existing prox badges keep working. The MTB15 reads 125 kHz proximity and 13.56 MHz smart credentials in the same unit, including MIFARE Classic and MIFARE DESFire EV1, EV2 and EV3, plus the card serial number (CSN) of other manufacturers' smart cards. That is the point of the multi-technology design: you run the old prox population and new smart credentials side by side and migrate on your own schedule rather than reissuing the whole building in one weekend.
2) Will the Schlage MTB15 reader fit a standard single-gang electrical box?
The MTB15 is a single-gang wall mount reader and comes with a mounting bracket. Its body measures 5.1 x 3.25 x 0.76 inches, so it covers a single-gang box rather than sitting inside it. Wiring is a 12 inch, 12 conductor 22 AWG quick-connect pigtail, so plan enough slack in the box for the connector.
3) Can the Schlage MTB15 be mounted outdoors or on a metal door frame?
Both are covered. The MTB15 is rated for interior, exterior, metal and non-metal installation environments, with a PBT polymer housing and an operating range of -31 to 151 degrees F (-35 to 67 degrees C). That temperature band covers unheated garages, parking structures and most North American exterior openings. Mounting on metal does not require a spacer to work, but it is a single-gang mount, so on a narrow hollow metal frame or mullion you need a surface with room for a 5.1 x 3.25 inch footprint.
4) Does the Schlage MTB15 support OSDP, or is it Wiegand only?
Both. The MTB15 outputs Wiegand, Clock and Data, or RS-485 with OSDP support, so it drops onto a legacy Wiegand panel today and converts to OSDP over RS-485 when the head end is upgraded, without swapping the reader. If you are standardizing a facility on OSDP for supervised, encrypted reader communication, this reader does not have to be replaced when that migration happens.
5) What voltage does the Schlage MTB15 card reader need, and can I power it from my existing access control panel?
5 to 28 VDC. That wide input covers the 12 VDC and 24 VDC reader power most panels and power supplies put out, so in the large majority of retrofits it runs off the reader port or auxiliary supply already in the enclosure. Verify current headroom on the supply if you are adding several readers to one board.
6) Can employees use their phone instead of a card with the Schlage MTB15?
Yes, with Schlage mobile credentials. The MTB15 supports Bluetooth (BLE) and NFC, and works with NFC-open smartphones using Schlage mobile credentials. The reader itself does not create the credential, so a phone-based rollout means issuing Schlage mobile credentials to users in addition to buying the reader. Physical cards still work on the same reader, so you can run phones and badges together.
7) What is the difference between the Schlage MTB15 reader and the Securitron R100 card reader?
They solve the same door in two different wiring situations. The Schlage MTB15 is a wired single-gang wall mount reader running on 5 to 28 VDC, with Wiegand, Clock and Data, and RS-485/OSDP output back to an access control panel, and it reads 125 kHz proximity, 13.56 MHz smart credentials, and Bluetooth/NFC mobile credentials. The Securitron R100 is a surface mounted wireless card reader in the RH100 Series, so it mounts to the surface rather than to a single-gang box. If you have conduit and a panel home run at the opening, the MTB15 drops into the existing box; where you cannot pull cable to the reader location, the surface mounted wireless R100 is the one that fits the opening.
8) Do I need a keypad reader instead of the Schlage MTB15?
The MTB15 is card and mobile credential only, with no keypad. If your site requires card-plus-PIN, or PIN-only after hours, you need a keypad model from the MT family instead. Schlage builds five models in this reader line covering keypad and magnetic stripe variants. Pick the plain MTB15 where a badge or phone tap is the whole credential.
9) How is the Schlage MTB15 reader configured after installation?
Configuration is done from a phone. The MTB15 has a plug and play mode for straight drop-in operation and is commissioned through the Schlage Engage mobile app when you need to change reader settings. No laptop, no serial cable, and no configuration cards to keep track of on a multi-door job.
10) Does the Schlage MTB15 read government PIV cards, and what card standards does it follow?
The MTB15 handles ISO 14443A and ISO 15693 contactless credentials, and its standard default PIV output is 75 bit. That matters on federal, healthcare and campus jobs where PIV or PIV-I cards are already issued and the panel has to receive the card number in a format it can parse.
11) Can a Securitron R100 be used in place of a Schlage MTB15 on a panel-connected door?
Not as a like-for-like swap. The MTB15 is a wired reader that terminates 22 AWG, 12 conductor cable and sends credential data to the panel over Wiegand, Clock and Data, or RS-485/OSDP, and it takes 5 to 28 VDC from that same run. The Securitron R100 is a wireless reader in the RH100 Series and mounts to the surface, so it does not use the single-gang box or the multi-conductor panel run the MTB15 is built around. Swapping one for the other changes how the opening communicates and how the reader is powered, not just the plate on the wall, so plan the head end and the mounting before you order.
12) Can a user tell whether the Schlage MTB15 accepted their badge?
The reader gives an LED indication in red, green or amber plus audio feedback on each read. For a property manager fielding calls about doors that will not open, that is the first troubleshooting step: a red or silent read is a credential or permission issue at the panel, not a dead reader.
13) Is the Schlage MTB15 a commercial-grade reader for an office or institutional building?
It is built for commercial access control, not residential smart-home use. The MTB15 is a wired reader that reports to an access control panel, so it belongs on a system with a head end managing users, schedules and audit trail. Housing is PBT polymer with an operating range of -31 to 151 degrees F, which covers interior corridors, stairwells and exterior entries in the same building standard.
