Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but we continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Schlage ND10S HSLR 630 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND10 passage function actually do on the door?
Both levers stay unlocked at all times. There is no key, no button, no locking of any kind: you turn either lever and the latch retracts, so the inside lever is always free for immediate egress. That is ANSI F75 passage. Use it on corridor doors, closets, and any opening that needs latching but not locking. If you need the door to lock, the ND10 is the wrong function.
2) Why would I spec an anti-ligature trim on a passage lock instead of a standard lever?
The HSLR high security ligature resistant trim replaces the lever with a sloped pull that gives nothing to tie a cord or sheet to. It's specified in behavioral health units, detention areas, correctional intake, and school or hospital rooms where a patient or inmate is at risk. The lock behind it is the same Grade 1 ND cylindrical chassis; only the trim changes. In a passage application you get free operation both sides with the ligature risk removed.
3) Can I swap a Schlage ND10 HSLR into an existing cylindrical lock prep, or do I have to re-bore the door?
No re-boring. Every ND Series lock, including the ligature-resistant trim versions, uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, so it drops into an existing 161 prep. That covers most commercial doors already carrying a cylindrical lever lock, which is why these get used on retrofit as readily as new construction.
4) Do I need to specify handing when I order the ND10 with HSLR trim?
Yes. The HSLR trim is handed and ships as either LH (left hand) or RH (right hand). Standard ND lever locks are field-reversible, but the ligature-resistant trim is sloped, so it has to match the door swing. Stand on the outside of the opening: if the hinges are on your left, it's left hand. Get this wrong and the slope runs the wrong way.
5) Is the Schlage ND10 HSLR approved for a fire-rated door?
Yes. ND Series locks are UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4'0" x 10'0", and for pair doors at 3 hours up to 8'0" x 8'0" with the 3/4 inch latch option. Pair doors at 90 minutes go to 8'0" x 10'0", again with the 3/4 inch latch. Note the pair-door listings depend on that 3/4 inch latch, so specify it when the opening is a pair.
6) Does an anti-ligature passage lock still meet ADA and accessibility code?
It does. ND Series locks meet ADA requirements and comply with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings. A passage function helps here, since there is no key, turn, or thumbturn to operate, only the trim itself.
7) Will a passage lock hold up in a high-abuse psychiatric or detention setting?
The chassis is built well past the Grade 1 minimum. It resists a minimum 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque, 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull against pry bar attack, and 100 vertical impacts without gaining access. Cycle life is a minimum 16 million cycles with no visible lever sag and no set screws or spacers propping it up. Heavy duty, zinc and steel construction.
8) If I need the door monitored, can I get the ND10 with a request-to-exit switch?
Yes, the ND10 passage function is also available with a Request to Exit (RX) function, which signals the access control panel when the lever is operated. The base ND10 HSLR itself is a mechanical, non-electronic lock, so RX has to be specified as a separate option rather than added later.
9) I need locked rooms on the same corridor as these passage doors. What else can I order to keep everything matching?
Stay in the ND Series. It covers 24 mechanical functions including ND40 privacy (ANSI F76), ND50 entrance/office (F82), ND70 classroom (F84), and ND80 storeroom (F86), all on the same ANSI 161 prep. The series is also suited to Schlage ALX Grade 2 locks and suites with Von Duprin exit devices, so a corridor mixing bored locks and exit hardware still reads as one package.
10) Do I have to order a cylinder or key it to my system?
No. The ND10 is a non-keyed passage latch, so there's no cylinder, no keyway, and nothing to key into a master system. Nothing to specify on the keying line of the order. If the opening needs to lock, move to a keyed ND function such as ND80 storeroom.
11) What finish does the Schlage ND10 HSLR ligature resistant trim come in?
630, satin stainless steel, in both left and right hand. That's the standard institutional finish and it matches the stainless hinges, push plates, and closer covers typically used in behavioral health and detention openings.
12) Does the Schlage ND10 HSLR qualify for a federal or Buy American job?
It does. ND Series locks meet the Buy American Act and also meet Federal Specification FF-H-106C Series 161. For coastal work, the series also complies with the Florida Building Code (ASTM E330, E1886, E1996) and Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 hurricane requirements.
