Schlage SCH-L9010-HSLR – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9010 with HSLR trim fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
That is the only thickness the L9010 HSLR is set up for. Door thickness is 1-3/4 inches, backset is 2-3/4 inches, and the lock case is 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches with a 1-1/4 x 8 inch armor front. If your openings are thicker than 1-3/4 inches, this configuration is not the one to order.
2) What does the HSLR anti-ligature trim on a Schlage L9010 actually do for a behavioral health room?
HSLR is Schlage's High Risk Ligature Resistant trim, the sloped trim used on behavioral health openings so there is no protrusion a cord or strap can be anchored to. It is paired here with the L9010 passage function: the latchbolt pulls back from either side at all times and there is no locking at all, so a patient room or corridor door stays free-swinging while the hardware itself gives nothing to tie off to.
3) Does the Schlage L9010 passage mortise lock take a key or a cylinder?
No cylinder, no key. The L9010 is a non-keyed passage function, so it only latches, it never locks. If the room needs to be secured, you want a different L Series function, or from another brand something like the Cal-Royal NM8080 storeroom mortise lockset or the Hager 3850E office function.
4) Do I have to order the Schlage L9010 HSLR by hand, and can it be reversed in the field?
The lock case is field reversible, but the HSLR trim is ordered handed: left hand and right hand are separate items, both in 630 satin stainless. Determine handing from the outside of the door, standing on the side you push from, and order to match. Getting the wrong one means swapping trim, not the lock body.
5) Will the Schlage L9010 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The latchbolt throws 3/4 inch in stainless steel with an anti-friction tongue, and the lock ships with a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner box strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That is the standard ANSI mortise strike prep, so it drops into an existing ANSI 4-7/8 inch frame cutout. A frame prepped for a T-strike or a radius corner strike will need the face reworked.
6) Is the Schlage L9010 approved for a fire rated door?
The L9000 mortise locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, and UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol appear on the latch front to show the listing. Because the L9010 is passage only, it latches the door but provides no locking, which is what a fire door needs to stay positively latched.
7) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage L9010 anti-ligature passage mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The TownSteel MRX-L-01 is the nearest match: it is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in a passage/hall/closet function, in stainless steel, for a 1-3/4 inch door. The Schlage L9010 with HSLR trim is likewise a Grade 1 passage latch mortise lock on a 1-3/4 inch door with ligature resistant trim. Both put a non-keyed passage latch on a behavioral health opening; the difference is the trim family, HSLR on the Schlage versus the MRX-L anti-ligature lever on the TownSteel.
8) What should be used instead of a Schlage L9010 when the door has to lock?
The L9010 is a non-keyed passage latch, retracted by the lever from either side at all times, so it never secures the opening. For a keyed mortise lock on the same kind of door, the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option on a 1-3/4 inch door, and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for a 1-3/4 inch door. For a bathroom or bedroom that needs privacy rather than a key, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset.
9) What ANSI grade and function code is the Schlage L9010 passage mortise lock?
F01 is the ANSI function code, and the lock is certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012, Series 1000, Grade 1 Operational and Grade 1 Security. Heavy duty commercial rating. For a facility standardizing hardware across a building, F01 is the designation to put on the schedule for a passage mortise lock.
10) Can I match the Schlage L9010 to the exit devices and other locks already in my building?
L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a facility can carry one lever design across mortise locks, exit device trim and electrified openings. Note the HSLR trim itself is a ligature resistant design, not a standard lever, so it will look different from a conventional lever on adjacent doors by intent.
11) Does the Schlage L9010 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt on the L9010. It is latchbolt only, and the inside lever is always free for immediate egress. The 1 inch stainless deadbolt throw quoted for the L9000 family belongs to the deadbolt functions in the series, not to the passage function. If you need a mortise deadbolt on the opening, the Sargent 4874 double cylinder mortise deadbolt runs a 2-3/4 inch backset to match.
12) Is the Schlage L9010 HSLR electronic or can it be tied into access control?
Mechanical only. The L9010 HSLR is a non-electronic passage lock with no card reader, keypad or wiring. If the opening needs credentialed access, Schlage Electronics options include the CO-100 standalone electronic mortise lock and the LEMD ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader.
13) What is the Schlage L9010 lock case made of, and does it meet Buy American?
The lock body is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, and the latchbolt is stainless steel. The L Series meets BAA (Buy American Act) requirements, and the locks carry Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings, plus ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40. Those are the line items a government or institutional submittal usually asks for.
14) For standardizing a behavioral health facility, what other ligature resistant mortise options pair with a passage function lock?
On doors that must stay unlocked, the Schlage L9010 with HSLR trim, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 anti-ligature lever and the TownSteel MRX-A-01 arch trim all provide a Grade 1 heavy duty passage function on a 1-3/4 inch door. The Marks USA 5PDN adds a Grade 1 hospital passage push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel for openings where a paddle is preferred. All are non-electronic passage devices, so a facility can hold one trim style across patient room, corridor and closet doors.
15) What is a simpler passage mortise lock for a corridor or closet door that does not need ligature resistant trim?
For a standard opening, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, in the passage/hall/closet function. The Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose trim and a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Hager 3810E is the same passage function with escutcheon trim. All three carry a passage latch like the Schlage L9010, which is also field reversible with a 2-3/4 inch backset; the L9010 HSLR adds ligature resistant trim intended for behavioral health openings.
16) Do Emtek mortise dummy locksets work as a substitute for a Schlage L9010 passage mortise lock?
No. The Emtek 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton, 3106 Manhattan and 3019 Brisbane are dummy function mortise entrance locksets, so the trim is fixed and there is no working latchbolt. The Schlage L9010 is a passage latch whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side at all times and holds the door closed. A dummy suits an inactive leaf; it does not latch an active door.
17) Is a Schlage CO-100 mortise lock an alternative to an L9010 for a behavioral health room door?
They answer different needs. The Schlage CO-100 mortise lock is a standalone electronic Grade 1 heavy duty lock with a keypad reader in a privacy function for a 1-3/4 inch door, so it adds credential control and a projecting keypad. The Schlage L9010 is a non-electronic Grade 1 passage latch on a 1-3/4 inch door with HSLR anti-ligature trim. Where the requirement is ligature resistant trim on a free-swinging door, the L9010 HSLR is the one built for it; where the requirement is coded access, the CO-100 is.
18) What replaces a Schlage L9010 on a door thinner than 1-3/4 inch?
The Schlage L9010 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. For thinner stock, the Alarm Lock DL2700CR and DL3500CR Trilogy electronic mortise locks cover a 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch door thickness range in a Grade 1 classroom function, and the Baldwin 6310 mortise lock body covers 1-3/8 inch and over in an entrance/storeroom function with a 2-1/2 inch backset. Note the Baldwin backset differs from the 2-3/4 inch backset the L9010 is prepped for, so the door mortise is not interchangeable.
19) Does the Schlage L9010 meet ADA requirements for a healthcare corridor?
The L Series meets ADA requirements, and under the California Referenced Standards Code all levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less comply. Passage function helps here too, since there is nothing to unlock and the latch retracts from either side at all times.
20) What finish does the Schlage L9010 HSLR come in?
630 satin stainless steel, in both left hand and right hand. That is the standard institutional finish and it matches the satin stainless used on the TownSteel MRX-A-01 and the Marks USA 5PDN paddleset if you are mixing ligature resistant hardware across a wing.
21) What is the difference between a Schlage L9010 and a BEST 45H mortise lock body?
The BEST 45HCAC is a heavy duty mortise lock body in a public entrance function with field reversible operation, and the 45HCAINL is a heavy duty mortise lockbody with an intruder function; both are sold as lock bodies, so trim is specified separately. The Schlage L9010 is supplied as a Grade 1 heavy duty passage latch mortise lock with HSLR anti-ligature trim and is field reversible. If the existing BEST body is staying in the door and only the trim is changing, the L9010 is a complete lock rather than a trim-only order.
22) Can a Sargent mortise thumbturn or a Falcon dummy escutcheon be ordered in place of an L9010?
No, those are trim items rather than locks. The Sargent 130KB and 130W are standard duty mortise thumbturns, and the Falcon MESC600DT is a dummy escutcheon lever trim for M9900 series exit devices. The Schlage L9010 is a complete Grade 1 mortise passage lock with a latchbolt operated by the lever from either side, supplied with HSLR anti-ligature trim.
