Push-button locking. Can be opened from outside with small screwdriver. Turning inside lever or closing door releases button. Inside lever is always free for immediate egress.

Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but we continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Security

  • Significantly exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 requirements
  • No access with minimum 3,100 in-lb. abusive lever torque, the equivalent of over 690 lbs. applied to the end of a 4-1/2" lever, 2.6 times over the BHMA requirement*
  • No access with minimum 1,600 lbs. offset lever pull for protection against pry bar attacks, 8 times over the BHMA requirement*
  • 5 points of engagement provide nearly zero droop and wobble after 16 million cycles, 16 times over the BHMA requirement*, without the use of set screws or o-rings
  • High security locking when used with Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders

Function availability and convenience

  • 24 mechanical/4 electrified functions (custom functions available)
  • Multiple key systems available: open, patented and restricted
  • Four electrified functions auto-detect 12/24V DC operation and, with maximum current draws of 0.4 amps and 0.1 amps holding current eliminate heated levers
  • Indicator roses for classroom applications
  • Three spring cage sets support all Schlage plus eight competitive cylinder formats

Aesthetics

  • Nine lever and four rose designs
  • Ten available finishes
  • Perfectly suited to Schlage ALX Series grade 2 locks

Schlage ND40S HSLR 630 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage ND40 privacy lock fit the same door prep as the lock I'm pulling off?
ND Series cylindrical locks all use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, so the ND40 drops into an opening already bored for a standard 161 prep. That is what makes the whole ND family interchangeable, mechanical, electrified or ligature resistant trim, and it is why these go into retrofit work as readily as new construction. If the existing door was bored for a 161 cylindrical lock, no new boring is needed.
2) How does the ND40 bathroom lock work, and can staff get in if someone locks themselves in?
The ND40 is a push-button privacy function. Push the button on the inside to lock; turning the inside lever or simply closing the door releases it. From the outside it can be opened with a small screwdriver, which is the emergency access a facility needs on a bath or bedroom door. The inside lever is always free, so egress is never blocked regardless of the button position.
3) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the ND40 HSLR anti-ligature lock?
Yes. The HSLR ligature resistant version is ordered left hand or right hand, and those are the only two choices. Standard ND lever trim is field reversible in most cases, but the anti-ligature trim is handed because of the sloped shape that sheds a cord, so it has to face the correct way on the door. Determine handing from the secure side and order to match.
4) Is an anti-ligature lock the right choice for a behavioral health or detention patient bathroom, or should I use a standard lever?
For a patient room or bathroom under suicide watch, the ligature resistant trim is what belongs on the door. A conventional lever gives an anchor point; the HSLR trim does not. The tradeoff is that the ligature resistant trim is handed and offers no lever-design or finish choice, so it is not the part for a general office or classroom opening. Use standard ND lever trim, which comes in nine lever designs and four rose designs, on ordinary doors, and reserve the HSLR trim for the rooms where ligature risk drives the specification.
5) Can the Schlage ND40 go on a labeled fire door?
Yes. ND Series locks are UL/cUL listed for 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4 feet by 10 feet, and for 3 hour pair doors up to 8 feet by 8 feet with the 3/4 inch latch option. Pairs up to 8 feet by 10 feet carry a 90 minute rating, also with the 3/4 inch latch. Note that a privacy function on a fire door still needs the latch to hold the door in the frame, so the 3/4 inch throw option is the one to specify on any pair.
6) Does the ND40 take a key or a cylinder?
No cylinder, no key. The ND40 is a non-keyed privacy function, so there is nothing to key, nothing to add to a master key system, and no cylinder to order alongside it. If the opening needs key control, the ND40 is the wrong function: look at the keyed ND functions instead, such as ND50 entrance/office, ND70 classroom or ND80 storeroom.
7) Does the ND40 meet ADA and accessibility code for a public restroom?
ND Series locks meet ADA requirements and comply with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings. Worth knowing for California work: the CA fire code compliance covers levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less, and those are named as the Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk levers.
8) Will the ND40 match the other Schlage and Von Duprin hardware already in my building?
ND Series is designed to suite with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and it is aesthetically matched to the Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks. That is the practical path for a property manager standardizing a facility: ND on the heavy traffic and abuse-prone openings, ALX where Grade 2 is enough, and the two read as one family on the door. The HSLR trim on the ND40 is its own shape, so it will not visually match a standard lever, but the rose footprint and door prep are shared across the series.
9) Does the Schlage ND Series qualify for a federal or Buy American job?
ND Series meets the Buy American Act and meets Federal specification FF-H-106C Series 161. For government, VA and military work that is the pairing a spec writer looks for, alongside the A156.2 Grade 1 certification.
10) What finish does the ND40 HSLR anti-ligature lock come in?
630 satin stainless steel, in left hand and right hand. That is the single finish on the ligature resistant trim, which suits it to the institutional openings it is built for. Standard ND lever trim is offered across ten finishes if the rest of the building needs to match something other than 630.
11) What is the Schlage ND40 made of?
Zinc and steel, rated heavy duty for commercial service. The chassis achieves its droop resistance through 5 points of engagement rather than set screws or O-rings, which means there are no small consumable parts to back out or perish in a bathroom environment where the hardware sees moisture and constant use.
12) Can I use the Schlage ND40 on a hurricane rated opening in Florida?
ND Series complies with the Florida Building Code under ASTM E330, E1886 and E1996, and with Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 for hurricane requirements. That covers the lock; the rest of the assembly, door, frame and closer, has to carry its own approvals for the opening to pass.
13) Is there an electronic or access control version of the ND40?
Not of the ND40 itself, which is a mechanical non-electronic privacy lock. The ND platform does carry wired electrified locks and the NDE wireless electronic lock, both built on the same mechanical chassis and the same 161 prep. Electrified functions auto-detect 12/24V DC, draw a maximum 0.4 amps with 0.1 amps holding current, and there are four electrified functions offered against 24 mechanical ones. A privacy bath/bedroom opening is not normally a credentialed door, so if you are asking about access control you are likely looking at ND80 storeroom or an NDE instead.
