Schlage L9050P HSLR 630 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9050 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
That is exactly what the L9050 is built for. It's a 2-3/4 inch backset mortise lock rated for 1-3/4 inch doors, which is the standard commercial door thickness. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, so your mortise pocket has to accept that case. If your doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inches you need a different door thickness option, not this one.
2) What does Entrance/Office function do on a Schlage L9050, and does it lock behind you?
The lever retracts the latchbolt from either side until you lock the outside lever, either with the key outside or the thumbturn inside. Once locked, only the key outside or the inside lever will retract the latch. It does not re-lock on its own the way a storeroom function does; it stays unlocked until someone turns the thumbturn or key. The inside lever is always free for egress, and an auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes. That's the function offices, staff rooms and suite doors use when the occupant decides when it's secure.
3) What is the HSLR trim on the Schlage L9050 and where is it actually used?
HSLR is Schlage's high risk ligature resistant lever, and it's the reason to pick this configuration over a standard L Series lever. The sloped, no-catch profile is meant for behavioral health, psychiatric and detention-adjacent spaces where a conventional lever gives a tie-off point. Same L9050 Entrance/Office lock body underneath, just the ligature resistant trim on it. If ligature resistance isn't a requirement on your opening, a standard lever design on the same lock body will do the job.
4) Do I have to specify handing when ordering a Schlage L9050 HSLR lock?
Yes, handing is required. The L9050 with HSLR trim is a handed lock, ordered left hand or right hand, and it is not field reversible the way some mortise bodies are. Stand outside the opening: if the hinges are on your left it's left hand, hinges on the right is right hand. Get this wrong and the lever pitch is upside down on the door.
5) Can I get the Schlage L9050 to take my existing SFIC or full size interchangeable cores?
Three cylinder choices cover it. Option P ships a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, ready to key. Option J is Schlage FSIC prepped less core, and option B is SFIC less prep core, both of which let you drop in the cores your facility already uses so the lock joins your existing key system. Worth knowing before you decide: with the conventional cylinder the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, with FSIC cores it's Grade 1 operational and Grade 2 security, and with SFIC cores it's Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security.
6) Is the Schlage L9050 Grade 1 and can it go on a fire rated door?
Grade 1, certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 Series 1000 for both operational and security, and the ANSI function designation is F04. It is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, with UL/cUL listing for A label single doors up to 4 x 10 feet and pairs up to 8 x 10 feet; the letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how the inspector confirms it. It also meets ADA requirements and the Buy American Act, which matters on federal and institutional specs.
7) What strike comes with the Schlage L9050 and will it work in my existing frame prep?
It ships with the 10-072 box strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. That's the standard ANSI mortise strike footprint, so it drops into a frame already prepped for an ANSI mortise strike. If your frame has radius corner prep rather than square, or the jamb-to-stop dimension calls for a longer or shorter lip than 1-3/16 inches, you'll want a different strike than the one in the box. The armor front on the lock is 1-1/4 by 8 inches.
8) I need a ligature resistant mortise lock but not a keyed one. What else is there besides the Schlage L9050?
The L9050 HSLR is keyed, single cylinder, Entrance/Office. If the opening is a corridor or a room that never locks, look at the TownSteel MRX-L-01, a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function, or the MRX-A-01, the same idea with an arch trim instead of a lever, both rated for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a push/pull rather than any lever at all, the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise paddleset, ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless. Behavioral health openings usually mix these: keyed HSLR on staff and med rooms, passage anti-ligature on patient room doors.
9) What's the difference between the Schlage L9050 Entrance/Office and a storeroom or classroom mortise lock?
Function is the whole difference, and it decides who controls the door. Entrance/Office, like the L9050, lets the occupant lock the outside lever with a thumbturn or key and leave it that way. A storeroom function is always locked outside and only a key gets you in, no thumbturn, which is what you want on mechanical and supply rooms; the Cal-Royal NM8080 and the Accentra 8805FL are both Grade 1 storeroom mortise locks. Classroom function locks and unlocks the outside lever by key only, no inside thumbturn, so a student can't secure the room; the Cal-Royal NM8070 and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 are Grade 1 classroom mortise locksets for 1-3/4 inch doors. Pick by who should be able to lock it, not by grade.
10) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage L9050 entrance/office mortise lock?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, built for a 1-3/4 inch door. That matches the L9050 on function (Entrance/Office), Grade 1, and 1-3/4 inch door thickness. The difference is trim: the Schlage L9050 carries the HSLR ligature resistant lever, while the Cal-Royal NM8050 is a standard lever lockset. If the opening is a behavioral health room where the trim is the point, the HSLR trim is the reason to stay with the L9050; if it is an ordinary office door, the NM8050 covers the same function.
11) The L9050 entrance/office function is not right for my door - which mortise lock has the function I need?
Function is the thing to change, and the mortise case is a different part number for each. For a door that stays locked outside and always allows egress, the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option. For a classroom, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for a 1-3/4 inch door and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is the Grade 1 classroom version. For a restroom or bedroom, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt. All of the Cal-Royal units are built for a 1-3/4 inch door, the same thickness the L9050 is prepped for.
12) Can I use a Baldwin 6301 mortise lock body in place of the Schlage L9050?
The backset is the blocker. The Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment mortise lock body, in both the knob by knob and the lever by lever version, is a 2-1/2 inch backset for a door 1-3/4 inch and over. The Schlage L9050 is a 2-3/4 inch backset. A 2-1/2 inch case will not drop into a pocket cut for 2-3/4 inch without re-prepping the door edge and re-drilling the trim holes, so treat the Baldwin as a new prep rather than a swap. The same applies to Baldwin's 6310 entry/storeroom bodies, which are also 2-1/2 inch backset.
13) Can I order several Schlage L9050 locks keyed alike so one key opens all of them?
Keying is a required selection on the order. Keyed different is the standard, keyed alike puts a group of locks on one key, and there's a less-cylinder option if you're supplying your own cores. There's also a free text field for special cylinder or keying requirements, which is where a masterkey bitting, a specific keyway, or a construction keying instruction goes. If you're standardizing a floor or a wing, say so there.
14) Will the Schlage L9050 lever match the exit devices and other locks already in my building?
If the rest of the building is Von Duprin and Schlage, yes. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so the trim reads as one family across lock, exit device and electrified openings. The catch on this particular configuration is the HSLR lever, which is a ligature resistant design and will not visually match a standard lever elsewhere in the building. Use it where the application demands it and standard L Series trim on the rest.
15) Is the Schlage L9050 HSLR an electronic or access control lock?
No, it's a mechanical key-operated lock, heavy duty, no wiring and no credential reader. For a ligature resistant opening that also needs to be on an access control system you're changing product type, not options. Schlage Electronics offers the ENGAGE LEMD wireless mortise lock, Grade 1 with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3-hour fire rating, and the CO-100 standalone mortise lock with a keypad. Neither is offered with HSLR trim, so on a behavioral health door the usual answer is mechanical HSLR at the opening and electronic control somewhere else in the path.
16) Does the Schlage L9050 have a deadbolt?
No deadbolt. The L9050 is a non-deadbolt function; security comes from the latchbolt plus an auxiliary latch that deadlocks it once the door is closed, so the latch can't be carded. If the opening needs a throw bolt as well, that's a different L Series function or a separate deadbolt. For a standalone mortise deadbolt the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, the same backset as the L9050.
17) I need a ligature resistant mortise device with no lever at all - what do I use instead of the L9050?
The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset, ligature resistant and ADA compliant, in satin stainless steel. It removes the lever entirely in favor of a paddle, which suits a patient room or bathroom door where the requirement is no protruding handle and no locking. The Schlage L9050 with HSLR trim keeps a lever and adds key and thumbturn control of the outside trim, so it is the choice when the door still has to lock.
18) What is the electronic version of an entrance/office mortise lock if I want codes instead of keys?
Several mortise platforms replace the cylinder with a credential. The BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override. The Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 is an electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock, and the E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 entry/egress pushbutton and card lock in a back to back mortise configuration. The Accentra NTM623-NR nexTouch Generation 3 is a Grade 1 mortise lock with a capacitive touchscreen keypad, no deadbolt, with cylinder override. The Schlage L9050 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed to a conventional 6-pin C keyway cylinder, so moving to any of these means power, credential management, and a different door prep.
19) I need the mortise lock body only, without trim - what are my options next to the L9050?
BEST sells the 45H series as a heavy duty mortise lock body on its own: the 45HCAC is a public entrance function body with field reversible operation, and the 45HCAINL is a heavy duty mortise lockbody with intruder function. Those are chassis-only orders where existing trim is being reused. The Schlage L9050 is supplied as a complete heavy duty lockset with the HSLR lever, coordinating rose and finish on both sides, plus latch and strike, so it is not a body-only order.
20) Is a mortise deadbolt like the Sargent 4874 an alternative to the L9050?
No - it is a different device doing a different job. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a deadbolt function mortise lock with no handing. Neither retracts a latch with a lever; they throw a bolt only. The Schlage L9050 is a non-deadbolt entrance/office function whose latchbolt is retracted by the lever from either side unless the outside lever is locked, with the inside lever always free for immediate egress. If a door needs both, the deadbolt is an addition to a latching lock, not a replacement for one.
21) What mortise lock do I use for a dormitory or corridor door instead of the entrance/office function?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. That function combines a latch with a deadbolt controlled from inside, which is what a dorm room or corridor door usually calls for. The Schlage L9050 is a heavy duty Grade 1 entrance/office function with no deadbolt, single cylinder, where the outside lever is locked by key or thumbturn - the right pick when the door needs to be secured on the way out but does not need a bolt.
22) Does the L9050 handing matter when comparing it to field reversible mortise locks?
Yes, and it changes how you order. The Schlage L9050 is a handed lock, sold left hand or right hand. The BEST 45HCAC mortise lock body and the Falcon MA101 Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock are both field reversible, so one part number covers either swing and a stocking shop can carry fewer SKUs. On the L9050 the hand has to be called out at the time of order along with the cylinder option and finish.
23) For a behavioral health classroom or patient room that needs access control, what mortise locks compete with the L9050?
TownSteel's FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lockset with RFID for a 1-3/4 inch door in classroom function, and the FME-4000 adds electronic intruder classroom function with RFID on the same 1-3/4 inch door. Both bring credential-based access to a mortise prep. The Schlage L9050 is the mechanical route on the same 1-3/4 inch door: Grade 1, heavy duty, keyed single cylinder, with the HSLR ligature resistant lever, so it needs no power or head-end and no credential management.
24) What finish does the Schlage L9050 HSLR come in, and will it hold up in a healthcare corridor?
630 satin stainless steel is the finish, which is the standard institutional choice and the one that hides wear and cleaning chemicals best. The lock case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating for corrosion resistance inside the door. It's a heavy duty, commercial rated lock certified to Grade 1 operational, so the cycle life is the highest the ANSI standard defines.
