Schlage ND45D Grade 1, Time Out Function, Cylindrical Lock, Rhodes Lever, Non-Keyed, 2-3/4" Backset

Schlage Lock Company ND Series

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified ND series locks. These locks are put through extreme levels of testing and are proven to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque-more than 2-1/2 times the grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock’s superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles. All ND series locks including electronic functions, ligature-resistant trims, and ground-breaking, high-visibility status indication trims use the common cylindrical ANSI 161L door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications where grade 1 strength and security are desired.

Features:

  • No access with minimum 3,100 in-lbs of lever torque (2.6x BHMA, for general abuse)
  • No access with minimum 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull (8x BHMA, for pry-bar attacks)
  • No access with minimum 100 vertical impacts (20x BHMA, for sledgehammer attacks)
  • Near-zero droop and wobble beyond 16 million cycles (after 16x BHMA) – without the use of set screws or O-rings

Schlage ND45D-RHO-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage ND45 time out function actually work on a detention or behavioral health room?
The ND45 is a time out lock with Vandlgard. There is a spring-loaded push button in the outside lever and a plain lever inside. Unlocked, either lever retracts the springlatch. From the caretaker side, pushing and holding the button engages Vandlgard, so the lever on the detention side spins free without pulling the latch. The moment the caretaker releases the button, the inside lever re-engages and the door opens. It only holds while someone is physically holding the button, which is what makes it a time out function rather than a lockdown.
2) Will a Schlage ND lock drop into my existing cylindrical door prep?
It should. Every ND Series lock, including the electronic functions, ligature-resistant trims and the status indicator trims, uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161L door preparation. That means you can swap functions across a building without re-prepping doors, and it is why the series is specified for retrofit as well as new construction.
3) Can I key a Schlage ND lock into an existing Best, Medeco or Sargent system?
Yes. ND Series locks support ten non-Schlage cylinder formats, including Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent and Yale, ordered as a less cylinder option. Straight from Schlage it ships with a 6-pin conventional cylinder on the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway and two keys; FSIC, SFIC and 7-pin SL formats are also available, along with open, restricted, Primus, master keying and construction keying.
4) I need a storeroom lock, not a time out lock. Which ND function should I order?
ND80 is the standard storeroom function (ANSI F86): outside lever always fixed, key in the outside lever retracts the latch only, inside lever always free for egress. If the opening takes abuse, go ND96, the Vandlgard storeroom, where the outside lever rotates freely when locked instead of resisting. ND81 is the accessible storeroom version, where turning the key 180 degrees clockwise lets the outside lever work the latch. If you want a lighter-duty storeroom lever, the Hager 2580 with Withnell lever is a Grade 2 storeroom lock for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt.
5) What is the closest Grade 1 alternative to the Schlage ND45D for a detention or behavioral health door?
The Schlage ND45D is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with the time out function, where a spring-loaded pushbutton on the caretaker lever engages Vandlgard so the detention side lever rotates free of the latch. The nearest Grade 1 peer aimed at that kind of opening is the Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock (F87), a Grade 1 cylindrical lock with asylum/institution/utility function for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The difference is control: the C1000 asylum keeps both levers fixed with key-only latch retraction, while the ND45D gives the caretaker momentary control by holding the button rather than by key.
6) If I need key-controlled storeroom security instead of the caretaker pushbutton on the ND45D, what should I order?
The Schlage ND45D uses a held pushbutton on the caretaker lever rather than a key to control the opposite lever. For a keyed storeroom opening where the outside lever stays locked and a key retracts the latch, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Hager 2580 with the Withnell lever is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Both are storeroom function; the ND45D is Grade 1 heavy duty and carries the time out function instead.
7) Is the ND45 handed, and do I need to specify left or right?
No handing to specify. ND Series cylindrical locks are non-handed, so the same lock goes on either swing. That matters on a retrofit where you are replacing a mixed set of openings from one box of stock.
8) What is the difference between an ND Vandlgard function and a standard ND function?
Vandlgard changes what happens when someone yanks a locked lever. On a standard function such as ND70 classroom or ND80 storeroom, the locked outside lever is rigid and takes the full force of the attack. On the Vandlgard equivalents (ND94, ND96, ND97, ND91, ND92, ND93, ND98) the locked lever rotates freely without engaging the latch, so the abuse goes nowhere. Same functions, same ANSI codes, same 161L prep. Choose Vandlgard for schools, corridors, and anywhere levers get hung on.
9) Is there a Grade 1 cylindrical lever from another brand if I cannot get Schlage ND?
A few genuine Grade 1 cylindrical lever options sit alongside it. Corbin Russwin's CL3100 Series is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors and carries a fire rating. Falcon's K Series is Grade 1 heavy duty with a wider 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch thickness range and a fire rating; the Falcon T Series is Grade 1 heavy duty with pressure release technology. Dexter's C1000 Series is Grade 1 with clutching levers in classroom, classroom security and asylum functions. None of them publish the time out function the ND45 does, so if the free-spin-while-held behavior is the requirement, the ND45 is the specific part.
10) I need matching dummy trim on the inactive leaf to go with my ND locks. What do I order?
ND170 is single dummy trim, a fixed lever on one side with no latch or chassis, used as a pull or to match an inactive leaf. ND172 is the double dummy, fixed levers both sides. Since neither has a chassis, latch cover plates are available under part number 47269199 if you are covering an existing prep. Both take the same lever designs and finishes as the operating locks, so the openings match.
11) Does the Schlage ND Series come in an electrified version, and what power does it need?
The mechanical ND45 itself is not electronic, but the series includes six wired functions if you need access control on the same 161L prep. Those run autodetecting 12-24V DC (+/- 10%), draw 0.23 amps maximum and 0.01 amps holding, switch between fail safe and fail secure by a switch on the chassis, and offer modular request to exit rated 3A at 125VAC or 2A at 30VDC. The electrified functions exceed BHMA A156.25 for indoor electrified locks.
12) Is the Arrow MK33 asylum lock a substitute for the Schlage ND45D?
They serve different openings. The Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a heavy duty Grade 2 asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, so both sides are key-controlled. The Schlage ND45D is a Grade 1 lever lock with the time out function, non-handed, where the caretaker side button momentarily disengages the opposite lever. If the specification calls for lever trim and Grade 1, the MK33 does not cover it; if it calls for knob trim and key-only operation, the ND45D does not.
13) What Grade 1 lever lock should I use on the adjacent doors that only need free passage?
The Schlage ND45D is the controlled opening; corridor and closet doors beside it that need no locking can take the Falcon K101, a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers, fire rated, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, or the Corbin Russwin CL3110, a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever lock, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. Both hold the same Grade 1 level as the ND45D so the corridor stays at one grade throughout.
14) Can I use a Grade 2 entrance or privacy lever instead of the Schlage ND45D on a supervised room?
Only if the opening does not actually need supervised control. The Schlage ND45D is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial lock with the time out function, which lets the caretaker side hold the opposite lever out of engagement. Grade 2 entrance and privacy levers such as the Hager 2525 entry lock and the Hager 2540 privacy lock with the Withnell lever, both for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, lock from the occupied side and offer no caretaker override of that kind. They are different functions, not a lower-grade version of the same one.
15) What is the difference between the Schlage ND45D and an electrified cylindrical lever lock like the Corbin Russwin CL33903?
The Schlage ND45D is a non-electronic mechanical lock; its control comes from the spring-loaded pushbutton in the caretaker lever, with no wiring or power supply. The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock running on 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, so it needs power transfer and an access control tie-in. Choose the ND45D where a person at the door makes the decision, and the CL33903 where a system does.
16) What finishes does the Schlage ND Series lever lock come in?
Ten: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643e aged bronze. For a healthcare or behavioral health opening the 626AM antimicrobial satin chrome is worth a look, and 626 is the finish most institutional standards land on.
17) I need matching inactive trim on the pair of doors where the ND45D is installed. What dummy lever works alongside it?
The Schlage ND45D is a keyed-capable Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock, so an inactive leaf needs separate dummy trim. Within Grade 1, the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a heavy duty Grade 1 single dummy trim cylindrical lever, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a heavy duty Grade 1 single dummy cylindrical lever in the 5400 Series. A medium duty option is the BEST 7KC Series 1DT, a Grade 2 single dummy trim. Dummy trim carries no latch or chassis, so it will not operate the door.
