Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but they continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Security

  • Significantly exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 requirements
  • No access with minimum 3,100 in-lb. abusive lever torque, the equivalent of over 690 lbs. applied to the end of a 4-1/2" lever, 2.6 times over the BHMA requirement*
  • No access with minimum 1,600 lbs. offset lever pull for protection against pry bar attacks, 8 times over the BHMA requirement*
  • 5 points of engagement provide nearly zero droop and wobble after 16 million cycles, 16 times over the BHMA requirement*, without the use of set screws or o-rings
  • High security locking when used with Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders

Function availability and convenience

  • 24 mechanical/4 electrified functions in the ND Series (custom functions available upon request)
  • Multiple key systems available: open, patented and restricted
  • Four electrified functions auto-detect 12/24V DC operation and, with maximum current draws of 0.4 amps and 0.1 amps holding current eliminate heated levers
  • Indicator roses for classroom applications
  • Three spring cage sets support all Schlage plus eight competitive cylinder formats

Aesthetics

  • Nine lever and four rose designs
  • Ten available finishes
  • Perfectly suited to Schlage ALX Series grade 2 locks
  • Suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products

Options

  • Vandlgard™ models have a lever that freely rotates up and down when locked to protect the chassis from excessive force on the lever to prevent vandlism.

*Beyond Grade 1 performance for ND Series locks with Schlage cylinders only (Conventional, FSIC & SFIC). Performance with non-Schlage cylinders will exceed BHMA grade 1 requirements, but the product performance may be less than that of Schlage cylinders.

Schlage ND72-RHO-626-XN12-003 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the Schlage ND72 with XN12-003 VandlGard communicating lock used for?
This Grade 1 cylindrical keyed lever lock is designed for high-traffic commercial applications requiring both security and communication between locks. The VandlGard feature provides vandal resistance. Ideal for schools, offices, and institutional buildings where coordinated access control is needed.
2) How does the communicating lock feature work?
The XN12-003 VandlGard system allows multiple locks to communicate electronically. When one lock is triggered or accessed, it can signal other locks in the network. This enables coordinated locking/unlocking scenarios and integrated security responses across connected entry points.
3) What door thickness and backset does this lock require?
Standard cylindrical locks typically fit 1-3/4" to 2" door thickness with 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" backset options. Verify your specific door dimensions and check the manufacturer's template before ordering. The lock may require specific prep dimensions for the communicating components.
4) Is this lock available in different lever styles and finishes?
Schlage ND series locks come in various lever designs and finishes including satin chrome, bright brass, and oil-rubbed bronze. The specific XN12-003 configuration may limit finish options. Contact us to confirm available combinations for your project requirements.
5) What power requirements does the VandlGard communicating system need?
Electronic communicating locks typically require low voltage power, often 12V or 24V DC. The system may need hardwired connection or Power over Ethernet depending on the specific configuration. Consult the installation manual for exact power specifications and wiring requirements.
6) Can this lock be keyed to match existing Schlage cylinders?
Yes, Schlage locks can be keyed alike or integrated into existing key systems. The lock accepts standard Schlage C keyway cylinders. Provide your existing key code or sample key when ordering to ensure compatibility with your current system.
7) What additional components are needed for installation?
Beyond the lock itself, you'll need appropriate strike plates, power supply for the electronic components, and communication wiring between locks. Some installations may require door reinforcement or modified prep. Review the complete system requirements before starting installation.
8) How do you install the communicating wiring between locks?
Installation typically requires running low voltage cable between lock locations through walls or conduit. Follow local electrical codes for low voltage wiring. The system may use twisted pair or other specified cable types. Professional installation is recommended for complex multi-lock configurations.
9) How do you maintain and adjust the VandlGard communicating features?
Regular maintenance includes checking electrical connections, testing communication between locks, and verifying proper mechanical operation. Electronic components may require periodic battery replacement or power supply inspection. Keep firmware updated if applicable to your system version.
10) What other Schlage ND series locks work with this communicating system?
Other Schlage ND series locks with compatible VandlGard electronics can integrate into the same system. This includes various function codes and lever styles within the ND line. Ensure all locks have matching communication protocols and system versions for proper operation.
11) Will this lock work in high-use institutional environments?
Yes, the Grade 1 rating and VandlGard features make this lock suitable for heavy-duty institutional use. The vandal-resistant design handles abuse better than standard locks. Regular maintenance and proper installation are essential for long-term performance in demanding environments.
