Schlage ND94 Grade 1 Single Cylinder Classroom Exterior Lockdown Vandlgard, Cylindrical Lock, Rhodes Lever, Key in Lever, Less Cylinder, 2-3/4" Backset

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified ND series locks. These locks are put through extreme levels of testing and are proven to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque-more than 2-1/2 times the grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock’s superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles. All ND series locks including electronic functions, ligature-resistant trims, and ground-breaking, high-visibility status indication trims use the common cylindrical ANSI 161L door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications where grade 1 strength and security are desired.

Features:

  • No access with minimum 3,100 in-lbs of lever torque (2.6x BHMA, for general abuse)
  • No access with minimum 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull (8x BHMA, for pry-bar attacks)
  • No access with minimum 100 vertical impacts (20x BHMA, for sledgehammer attacks)
  • Near-zero droop and wobble beyond 16 million cycles (after 16x BHMA) – without the use of set screws or O-rings

Schlage ND94-LD-RHO-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND94 Vandlgard classroom function actually do when the door is locked?
The ND94 is a classroom lock with exterior lockdown, ANSI F84. Key cylinder in the outside lever, plain lever inside, deadlatch. The key outside locks and unlocks the outside lever, and the inside lever always retracts the latch for immediate egress, whether the door is locked or not. The Vandlgard part matters on abused openings: when the outside lever is locked it rotates freely instead of staying rigid, so a student hanging on it or kicking it does not transmit force into the chassis.
2) Does the ND94 come with a cylinder, or do I have to supply one?
Less cylinder. The ND94 as configured here ships without the cylinder, so you provide it. That is deliberate for buildings already on a key system: the ND series supports FSIC, SFIC and 7-pin SL formats, and less-cylinder versions are made to fit non-Schlage cylinders from Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent and Yale. If you want it keyed from Schlage instead, the standard format is a 6-pin conventional cylinder in the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway, with open, restricted, Primus, master and construction keying as options.
3) Can I swap an ND94 into the existing prep from another ND series lock?
Yes. Every ND series lock, including the electronic functions, ligature-resistant trims and status indicator trims, uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161L door preparation. That means you can change function or trim across the series without redrilling, and it is why the ND is specified for both new construction and retrofit work.
4) What is the difference between the ND94 and the ND70, and which classroom lock should I spec?
Both are ANSI F84 classroom locks with exterior lockdown by key, plain inside lever, free egress at all times. The ND94 adds Vandlgard, so the outside lever spins freely when locked instead of standing rigid. If the opening sees abuse, pick the ND94. If you want teachers to be able to lock down from inside the room, neither one does that, both lock only from the outside; the ND78 and the Vandlgard ND98 are the 180-degree classroom security functions keyed on both sides.
5) What is the closest Grade 1 classroom lever lock to the Schlage ND94 from another manufacturer?
The Dexter C1000 Series classroom cylindrical lever lock is the nearest Grade 1 classroom equivalent. Like the ND94, it is a keyed Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with a clutching outside lever, and it covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The ND94 is the Vandlgard classroom function with exterior lockdown by key outside and the inside lever always free for egress. Confirm keyway and cylinder format against the school's existing system before substituting, since the ND94 is ordered less cylinder.
6) We want lockdown from inside the classroom instead of the corridor side. What should we order in place of the ND94?
The ND94 locks and unlocks only by key on the outside, so a teacher has to step into the corridor to secure the door. For inside lockdown, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom security lever lock is a Grade 1 clutching keyed lock built for that use, cylinders on both sides, on doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. Within the ND family the same intent is served by ND98, the Vandlgard classroom security function with 180-degree lockdown keyed from either lever.
7) Do I need to specify handing when ordering a Schlage ND lever lock?
No. The ND series chassis is non-handed, so one part number covers left and right hand doors and you cannot order the wrong hand. Lever orientation is set at install.
8) What else could I use if I want a Grade 1 classroom lever but not Schlage?
The closest peer ZenSupply stocks is the Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 classroom cylindrical lever lock, a clutching keyed lock rated for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. For the lockdown-from-either-side arrangement, the Dexter C1000 classroom security version covers the same door range. On the vandal-resistant angle specifically, Corbin Russwin's CL3100 Series is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever line, fire rated, for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, though the CL3110 is the passage function rather than classroom.
9) Is the Schlage ND94 an electrified lock, and can I get an electrified version in the same series?
The ND94 is a mechanical lock, no wiring. The ND series does offer six wired functions on the same ANSI 161L prep: autodetecting 12-24V DC input at plus or minus 10 percent, switch-selectable fail safe or fail secure on the chassis, modular request to exit rated 3A at 125VAC or 2A at 30VDC, and 0.23 amps maximum with 0.01 amps holding current. Those exceed BHMA A156.25 for indoor electrified locks. Because the prep is shared, you can start mechanical and convert an opening later.
10) The door is a storeroom, not a classroom. What should I order instead of the ND94?
Use a storeroom function. In the ND family that is ND96, the Vandlgard storeroom lock, where the outside lever is always inoperative and the key retracts the latch only. From another maker, the Hager 2580 with Withnell lever is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. Both are Grade 2, so they do not carry the Grade 1 rating the ND carries.
11) Is the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever a direct substitute for the Schlage ND94?
Not a like-for-like. The Cal-Royal AG03 is a classroom lever in the AG Series with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway supplied keyed different on a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the function intent and backset match the ND94. The difference is duty class and cylinder handling: the ND94 is a Grade 1 heavy duty lock with the Vandlgard clutching lever, furnished less cylinder so you can install your own keying, while the AG03 is a Grade 2 lock that arrives with its own Schlage C cylinder. On an opening that sees abuse, the clutching lever is the reason to stay with the ND94.
12) Is a clutching lever the same thing as Schlage Vandlgard, and which competing locks have it?
They describe the same idea: the outside lever spins free instead of transmitting torque into the chassis when the lock is secured, which is what protects the lock from someone hanging on the handle. Schlage calls it Vandlgard on the ND94. Dexter uses the term clutching on its C1000 Series Grade 1 classroom and classroom security levers, and Corbin Russwin describes the CL3110 passage lock in the CL3100 Series as vandal resistant. Confirm the function code separately, since clutching protects the lever but does not change who can lock the door.
13) We need the classroom door to release on an access control signal. Does the ND94 do that, or do I need a different lock?
The ND94 is a mechanical lock with no electronic operation, keyed from the outside only. For electrified release, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock at 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, offered with an NZ lever and D rose. Within the ND line the electrified functions run on autodetecting 12-24V DC with switch-selectable fail safe or fail secure operation and modular request to exit, so you can keep the same ANSI 161L door prep.
14) The opening needs both levers rigid with key access only, like a utility or mechanical room. What replaces the ND94 there?
That is institution or asylum function, not classroom. In the ND line it is ND82, where both levers are always fixed and a key in either lever retracts the latch only. Comparable parts are the Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 asylum lock, ANSI F87, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder in Grade 2 heavy duty. Note that double cylinder locks are not appropriate on any door used for egress.
15) Our building is standardized on Yale or Accentra cylinders. Does that rule out the ND94?
No. The ND94 is supplied less cylinder and the ND line supports non-Schlage cylinders including Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent and Yale, so it can be keyed into an existing system. Going the other direction, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware if you need Schlage-format cylinders to land in Yale locks.
16) What is the ND series lock body made of, and will it hold up in a humid or coastal building?
Modular construction of zinc and steel components, plated for corrosion protection, with a cast steel spindle tested beyond 16 million cycles. For healthcare or other infection-control settings there is a 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial finish alongside the standard 626 satin chrome.
17) Can I use a passage lever where the ND94 is specified if the door never needs to be locked?
Yes, if the opening truly never locks, a passage lever is the simpler part. Grade 1 passage options include the Falcon K101 with non-handed levers, fire rated, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch; the Falcon T101 heavy duty passage lever with pressure release technology; the Design Hardware X75 flat lever for 1-3/4 inch doors; and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 vandal resistant passage lock for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. None of these accept a cylinder, so you lose the key control the ND94 provides.
18) What matching inactive or dummy trim goes on the pull side of a pair where the ND94 is the active leaf?
Stay in the ND family for a visual match: ND170 is single dummy trim, a fixed lever on one side with no latch or chassis, and ND172 is double dummy trim with fixed levers both sides. If you are matching a different lock line, Grade 1 dummy trims include the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy and the Accentra 455LN Augusta heavy duty single dummy in the 5400 Series. Lever design and finish will not match the Schlage Rhodes lever, so use those only where appearance is not being matched.
19) Will a Kwikset or Baldwin lever work as a substitute for the ND94 on a school corridor door?
They serve a different class of opening. The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage and 300BRNL Breton privacy levers are Grade 3 residential-duty sets for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Baldwin Estate 5103 lever is offered in passage, privacy and handed half dummy versions with the 5048 rose. None of those is a keyed classroom function, and the ND94 is a commercial Grade 1 heavy duty lock. For a corridor or classroom door under commercial traffic, stay with a Grade 1 keyed lever.
20) Would a keypad or pushbutton lever be a better choice than the ND94 for a room with rotating occupants?
It is a different security model, not a grade-for-grade swap. The Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in passage function for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock. Those remove the need to issue keys but do not give you the Grade 1 clutching lever and key control the ND94 provides, where the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key from the corridor and the inside lever is always free for egress.
