PM044 - Privacy with Coin Turn Outside

  • Coin turn outside; thumbturn inside; latchbolt only

Schlage PM044 ATHA 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage PM044 privacy function actually work from each side of the door?
The PM044 is a latchbolt-only privacy mortise lock. Inside there's a thumbturn, outside there's a coin turn. Rotating either one makes the outside lever inoperative. To get back in from the outside in an emergency, rotate the coin turn with a coin or flat blade and the outside lever unlocks. From inside, turning the thumbturn unlocks it, and so does simply turning the inside lever, which retracts the latch and unlocks the outside at the same time. Closing the door also releases the lock, so nobody gets locked out. The inside lever is always free for egress.
2) Will the Schlage PM044 mortise lock fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
Yes. 1-3/4 inches is the standard door thickness for the PM044, but 1-3/8 inches is the stated minimum, and the lock will go into doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick. Anything over 1-3/4 inches has to be specified at time of order along with the lock's position in the door, and that option is available in EE only.
3) Do I have to order the Schlage PM044 handed, or can I flip it in the field?
No handing to specify. The PM044 chassis is field reversible, so one lock covers left and right hand openings and you can stock a single part number across a building.
4) What size mortise pocket do I need to cut for the Schlage PM Series lock case?
The PM Series case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch (113 x 154 x 25 mm). One thing to watch on a retrofit: PM Series and Schlage L Series case and cover holes differ, so an L Series pocket isn't a straight swap. Hub spacing is 3-7/8 inches lever to cylinder and 2-11/16 inches lever to thumbturn hub.
5) What do I have to pick when ordering a Schlage PM044?
Three choices drive the part number: lever design, rose or escutcheon, and finish. Levers are Athens, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Neptune, Playa, Rhodes, Selena, Tubular and Two. Trim is A rose, C rose, D rose or the N escutcheon. Finishes are 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 622 Matte Black, 625 Bright Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome and 643E Aged Bronze. No cylinder or keying to specify, since the PM044 is non-keyed.
6) I need a privacy mortise lock with a deadbolt, not just a latch. Is the PM044 the right one?
No. The PM044 is latchbolt only, secured by the coin turn and thumbturn. If you want a privacy function with a deadbolt, look at the Cal-Royal NM8440, a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, or the Hager 3840S Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. Both keep the 2-3/4 inch backset prep you'd already be cutting for the PM044.
7) Can I match the PM044 privacy locks to the keyed locks on the rest of the building?
Yes, in the sense that matters visually and operationally. PM Series locks are made to suite with other Allegion products, and they share lever and rose styles with the Schlage PT Series tubular locks, so a restroom on a PM044 privacy can carry the same lever and rose as PT Series tubular locks on the lighter-duty openings. The PM Series itself covers 26 functions including three electrified plus four mortise deadbolt functions, so the keyed openings come from the same family.
8) Is the Schlage PM044 heavy duty enough for a public restroom in a hotel or apartment building?
It's ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 and built for commercial use, which is the highest of the three grades for cycle life and strength. The case is cold rolled steel with corrosion resistant zinc dichromate plating, latch is stainless, and the trim uses zinc levers with brass roses or wrought brass escutcheons. The Performance Series line is aimed squarely at commercial real estate, retail, multifamily and hospitality.
9) Is the thumbturn on the Schlage PM044 ADA compliant?
The thumbturn style used on the PM044 is ADA qualified, and the lock is lever operated, which is what an accessible opening needs instead of a knob. Worth noting for a restroom or unit door where the privacy turn has to be operable without tight grasping or twisting of the wrist.
10) What is the difference between the PM044 privacy lock and a passage mortise lock?
A passage lock never locks. Levers work from both sides all the time, which is what you want on a corridor, closet or hall door. The PM044 adds privacy: the thumbturn inside takes the outside lever out of operation, with a coin turn outside for emergency entry. If you actually need passage, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty field reversible mortise passage lock, and the Hager 3810S and 3810E are Grade 1 passage mortise locks on a 2-3/4 inch backset with rose and escutcheon trim respectively.
11) Does the Schlage PM044 need power or wiring?
No. The PM044 is a purely mechanical, non-electronic, non-keyed privacy mortise lock. Nothing to wire, no batteries, no access control tie-in. If the opening needs credential control, the PM Series does include three electrified functions, or you'd move to an electronic mortise lock such as the Schlage CO-100 standalone privacy mortise lock with keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors.
