1) Will the Schlage L9444 privacy mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
The L9444 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors, which is the standard commercial thickness. The mortise case measures 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches and the backset is 2-3/4 inches, so the pocket in the door has to be cut for that case depth. If your doors are thicker, the L Series does offer door thickness options, but the standard build is the 1-3/4 inch one. Note the rose and escutcheon choices carry their own thickness limits: the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch.
2) How does the L9444 privacy function actually work from each side of the door?
Either lever retracts the latchbolt at any time. The deadbolt is thrown by the thumbturn on the inside or the coin turn on the outside, and throwing it locks the outside lever. From inside, turning the lever pulls both the deadbolt and the latchbolt and releases the outside lever, so the inside is always free for immediate egress. From outside, rotating the coin turn retracts the deadbolt and unlocks the lever, which is how staff or a caregiver gets in without a key. There is no keyed cylinder in this function.
3) Will the L9444 latch into the strike prep I already have in the frame?
The lock ships with a 10-072 box strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. The latchbolt throws 3/4 inch and the deadbolt throws a full inch, so the frame has to be pocketed deep enough for that inch of deadbolt, not just the latch. If your existing frame already carries a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 square corner ANSI strike prep from another mortise lock, the supplied strike drops into it. Radius corner preps need the corners dressed or the frame re-prepped.
4) Do I have to order the Schlage L9444 handed?
No handing to specify. The L9444 is non-handed, so one part number covers left and right hand openings. The one exception is the lever design itself: the 12 lever is offered as a left hand and a right hand version, so if you pick that style you choose the hand of the lever.
