1) How does the Schlage PM444 privacy mortise lock work from the outside if someone is locked in?
The PM444 is a privacy function with a coin turn on the outside. Inside, a thumbturn throws the deadbolt, which makes the outside lever inoperative. From the corridor side, rotating the coin turn retracts the deadbolt and unlocks the outside lever, so staff can get in without a key. Inside, the lever is always free: turning it retracts both the deadbolt and the latchbolt and unlocks the outside lever for immediate egress. There is no cylinder and no key on this lock.
2) Will a Schlage PM444 fit a 1-3/8 inch door, and what about a thick 2 inch door?
Standard is 1-3/4 inch, and 1-3/8 inch is the minimum the PM444 chassis will go into. It also fits doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but anything over 1-3/4 inches has to be specified at time of order along with the position of the lock in the door, and that is available in the EE configuration only.
3) What backset does the Schlage PM444 mortise lock require, and will it drop into an existing mortise pocket?
2-3/4 inch backset only, with no other option. The case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch, and the PM Series case and cover hole pattern differs from Schlage's L Series, so it is not a direct drop-in behind L Series trim. If you are replacing an L Series lock, check the pocket and trim prep against the PM template before ordering.
4) Does the Schlage PM444 take a key cylinder?
No cylinder. The PM444 is non-keyed, coin turn outside and thumbturn inside. If you need key access on the outside of the opening, this is the wrong function and you want a keyed PM Series function instead. The PM Series does work with Schlage's full key system line up on its keyed functions.
5) What is a cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage PM444 privacy mortise lock with deadbolt?
The Cal-Royal NM8440 is the closest cross-brand match. It is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt, listed with a Privacy/Bed/Bath function and a 1-3/4 inch door thickness.
